I have been getting this error in my event viewer recently, wondering if has any connection with my system fan operating at odd speeds. Just kind of curious if this error is something serious.

Details
Product: Windows Operating System
ID: 1
Source: ACPIEC
Version: 5.2
Symbolic Name: ACPIEC_ERR_WATCHDOG
Message: %1: The embedded controller (EC) hardware didn't respond within the timeout period. This may indicate an error in the EC hardware or firmware, or possibly a poorly designed BIOS which accesses the EC in an unsafe manner. The EC driver will retry the failed transaction if possible.

Explanation
The embedded controller (EC) hardware did not respond within the time limit. The EC driver will retry the failed transaction. If the EC continues to fail, the operating system might stop responding, or “hang.”

Possible causes include:

An error in the EC hardware or firmware.
A poorly designed basic input output system (BIOS) that accesses the EC incorrectly.

User Action
Contact the computer vendor for an updated BIOS and install it according to the vendor's instructions.

If the problem is not with the BIOS, contact the computer vendor for help with the possible EC hardware or firmware failure.

Anytime that an error has to do with the fans, it can also affect the temperture. Have you recently changed (flashed) the BIOS? Is there anything in particular that you can think of, that you changed prior to this happening?

Would you mind d/l Everest here (just chose between a self-extracting EXE file or ZIP). When you run it, click motherboard and BIOS, and post back the date that it says.
We are all curious like a cat. We wonder, we ask, we learn.
Please post back when a suggestion works, so that others may learn.

Ok here is the BIOS report. The only change I can think of would maybe be I downloaded a new driver for my Radeon 9000 video card. But that was quite some time ago.

I need a little more time to research the BIOS, but in the meantime, you can try this.

Open a new notepad file, and copy the contents below to it:

del c:\ *.tmp
del %temp%\*.tmp /f
del %windir%\prefetch\*.*
del %windir%\temp\*.* /f

Click File, save as, change save as type to all file, and name the file to clean temp files.bat
Save it to the desktop
Boot computer into safe mode, and run the bat file
Restart the computer

Would you mind starting a HJT log in the appropriate forum, and link this thread to it? HJT pinned thread you can find the current d/l for the file, at this link.

thanks!

No, you should not have to enable hidden files, but you can as it would not cause any harm.

There is an awesome tutorial on (un)hiding files for every Windows version.

Ok,

I ran the bat file. It prompted me with (Y/N) choices, I selected "yes" for them and then rebooted. I will post my newest log right now as well.

Thank you!

If it is fairly consistent on the time that your computer shuts down, then there may be a legitimate heat issue. A fix on the BIOS may repair that because of the problem that it is having with the EC.

It is possible that there is a update to the current BIOS that you have. In your report, it said that your BIOS date is 06/26/03. Although that date is fairly current for a BIOS, if there is an update, then it would likely fix the problem (unless the fan is going out, explained below). "If you cannot find the maker's name on or in the computer, in the copyright notice displayed during POST, or in the owner's manual, then you are out of luck. Phoenix does not make computer systems. There is no reliable way for Phoenix to determine the original manufacturer. The numbers listed on the BIOS sticker on the motherboard do not identify the BIOS version or the manufacturer of the system." They "are sequence numbers used to count stickers. They do not identify the BIOS nor the computer manufacturer. Our customer list is highly propriety information." (Quote taken from motherboards.mbarron.net/bios.html) Also on this link is useful information about how to upgrade the BIOS based on the specific motherboards. Using any of these steps, follow the directions exactly as stated.

Even though the ACPIEC errors are usually associated with one specific fan problem, I have a feeling that you could have more then one going out. Do you feel comfortable with opening up your computer? If so, i can tell you a trick on how to manually turn the fans (with the computer off of course), to see if you may be having a problem with the fan itself, and not the controller. If you have room for additional fans, it could also solve the problem.

Although heat problems should be handled immediately, the error is designed to shut the computer off to give it time to 'cool down'. As much as it may seem like an irritation for it occurring, it is a good thing that the error 'works' properly. Like a radiator in a car: if it goes out, and there is not a back-up system to shut the car off when it gets too hot (even the temp light coming on, is a warning sign), then more damage could occur. I know this from first hand. After I put in a new radiator in my car, I was running it hot for so long, that when it kicked in, the car was not used to being cooled down properly, so it cracked the head. I do not see that extreme happening to your computer.

Hey

Thank you for researching that for me.

First off, now that you told me about the BIOS needind an update, the last time the error occured, it said in the windows help message that one possible solution would be to update, but it was kind of vauge so I didnt;t want to do anything that I didn't know about. This problem occured a lot a while ago, and then I had to entire montherboard replace when I sent it in. I am now wondering if the update was what was really needed and not just a new Motherboard. This current motherboard in under 6 months old, and it is never in any extreme temperatures, its basically my desktop replacement. I am going to reasearch my manual and find the company that makes this product and try to update. I am guessing this is a good place to start? And for future reference I wouldn't mind if I had to open this notebook up, but I'll avoid it if possible. Obviously if thats what needs to be done, I have no choice=)

I'll post back soon and let you know where I am at with this

Thanks

Well, I did some checking online.

My comp is a Lifebook N series, model N3010.

I went to fujitsus' web site and looked for all possible updates.

There was nothing listed for the BIOS. Soon as I locate my manual, will find the producer.

Hey,

I contacted the vendor (Fujitsu) through the service and support about my problem. I am just waiting for a response back before I do anything.

Im sorry that it has been a while since I have resoponded.

Most notebook computers only have a few fans that you can see from the outside. Remember how I said that you may have to open it up to test it out? Well, the pictures and specs that I have reasearched on your model suggest that there is only one fan. You can test it out without having to open it up. Just make sure that it is COMPLETELY turned off, and unplugged from the wall before you do this. Look in the back of the computer and you will see a vent. Chances are very good that the grill will be far too small for you to place anything in there, but I would like for you to look at it as closely as possible and see if there is any discoloration. A digital camera would be ideal here, but not necessary. You will probably see a little dust, but do not blow it back in the laptop! If you can look close enough that you can see between the vent and the blades (?), I have a feeling that you will see more discoloration.

Mose heat issues are cause by build-up of dust and debris. In desktop (tower) computers, they are designed that you can open them up and blow out the dust with a can of compressed air. The same cause can be on laptops, but it is not as easy to clean out. Most circulation devices are not easily accessed in laptops, even if you do take the case off. If you do not feel comfortable with opening it up, then I would take it to a local computer shop and ask them how much they would charge to clean it up. It should not be much, and it is likely that you would get it back the next day. While you are there, let them know about your heat problem and you think that it could be fan related. When they open it up, and they already know about the heat issue, they will look for your EC sensor. It would not suprise me one bit, if some dust may have been collected on it.
