Hello whoever.

This sure feels like it'll be the same "Topic" I just survived...but it should be treated differently. I just "cleaned" up my Computer recently from a System32 popup when you boot up...but at the same time...............................I didn't.

I have two users on my computer...mine...and my wife. My "side" (A. S. Login) opens up clean....like a Sailor leaving the infermery.

My wife's side (L. S. Login)...still has the same System 32 window popup at startup. Had I known this at the beginning...um...uh...I would have said so. So now...on the flip side of the Computer...I start over again.

I have completed the 9-Step plan to a Fuller Head of Hair and have a HJT Log to post. For future reference...I will make it assumed that I am operating the Computer from my wifes side of the Computer.

"Split everything down the middle...bah!"

Your (whoever it may be) effort is appreciated. Best Regards and Good Luck... - AlanS.

Hello alanjs and welcome to the BC HijackThis forum. After reviewing your log I see a few items that require our attention. Please print these directions and then proceed with the following steps in order.

Step #1

Download CCleaner and install it but do not run it yet.

Remove these installed programs using Add or Remove Programs in the Control Panel:
  • Click Start.
  • Click Control Panel.
  • Double-click Add or Remove Programs.
  • Look in the Currently installed programs box for each program listed below and if it is there:
  • Click on it to select it.
  • Click Change (or Change/Remove) button.
  • If you are prompted to confirm the removal of the program, click Yes.
MailSkinner
Step #2

Start in Safe Mode Using the F8 method:
  • Restart the computer.
  • As soon as the BIOS is loaded begin tapping the F8 key until the boot menu appears.
  • Use the arrow keys to select the Safe Mode menu item.
  • Press the Enter key.
Step #3

Start HijackThis and click the Scan button to perform a scan. Look for the following items and click in the checkbox in front of each item to select it:O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [winshost.exe]
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [MailSkinner] c:\program files\mailskinner\mailskinner.exe

Now close ALL open windows except HijackThis and click the Fix Checked button to finish the repair.

Step #4

We need to make sure all hidden files are showing so please:
  • Click Start.
  • Open My Computer.
  • Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
  • Select the View tab.
  • Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
  • Uncheck the Hide file extensions for known types option.
  • Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
  • Click Yes to confirm.
  • Click OK.
Find the following files/folders and delete them (don't worry if they are already gone):c:\program files\mailskinner\ <--folder
Now perform a search for these files and delete all instances. Windows XP's search feature is a little different. When you click on 'All files and folders' on the left pane, click on the 'More advanced options' at the bottom. Make sure that Search system folders, Search hidden files and folders, and Search subfolders are checked.winshost.exe
Step #5

Start CCleaner and click on the Run Cleaner button in the lower right-hand corner. When it is finished close CCleaner.

Step #6

Reboot normally and run at least 2 of the following on-line virus scans:Bitdefender <<<Add a check by 'Autoclean'.
eTrust <<<'Cure' whatever is found, then delete if unsuccessful
Housecall <<<Put on 'Autoclean' and delete what it can't clean.
Panda ActiveScan <<<Accept default settings
If there are any files that cannot be automatically disinfected or quarantined then you will need to delete them manually.

Step #7

If you do not already have Ad-Aware SE 1.06 then follow these download and setup instructions: Ad-Aware SE Setup. Otherwise, just check for updates.

Start Ad-aware SE, click the Start button and choose Perform Full System Scan. Click the Next button and wait for the scan to complete. If anything was found, right-click on the list and choose Select All and remove all it finds.

Step #8

OK. Reboot your computer normally, start HijackThis and perform a new scan. Use the Add Reply button to post your new log file back here along with details of any problems you encountered performing the above steps and I will review it when it comes in.

Hello Old Timer!

I waited to write you a while for my homework assignment was a good body of work to conduct. I do have a problem I need assistance in to continue on. 1st let me start by debreifing you what I accomplished:

-I have installed CCleaner, peformed Ad-Aware SE (Zone Alarm) and 2 Scans. None of the scans discovered "bad-berries". I was able to remove 4 instances of winshost.exe and a mailskinner Folder in regular mode.

This is where I have a problem. For what ever reason...I do not see a SAFE MODE login for my wifes "side of the computer". When I F8 at the BIOS...I see my login and the "Administrator"...but not Her's. I've called 3 people for help. I've looked in the Control Panel under the "User Administration" and other Tid-Bit Spots hoping to find a "Reveal" or "Unlock", "Unhide"...something...anything. I know it's a user interface question...probably at a remedial level...but I'll need this "simple" answer before I hope to continue on.

Please advise as to why I cannot see this Login under Safe Mode

Again...your assistance is appreciated. Kindest Regards. -alanjs

Hi alanjs. I'm not sure as to why the user account does not show up in the Safe Mode boot screen but you should be able to logon with it by doing the following:

After booting to Safe Mode when you get to the logon screen hold down the Ctrl-Alt buttons and tap the Del key twice. This should bring you to the Classic logon screen. Type in the user name you want to log in as and the password for that account and you should be able to logon with that account.

Cheers.

Hello OldTimer,

I got the User to "show" itself by doing as you instructed. Still not sure why I had to Ctrl-Alt-Del at the Safe Mode Startup...but I was able to conduct the tasks you requested of me to accomplish from your post dated the 1st of April. Enclosed is the HJT log upon completion.

The System32 Window still appears at startup. I expected as much. I eagerly await your next assignment. Kind Regards - alanjs

Hi alanjs. The system32 message is probablystill coming because the winshost entry isstill in the startup. Let's try removing it again.

Start HijackThis and click the Scan button to perform a scan. Look for the following items and click in the checkbox in front of each item to select it:O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [winshost.exe]
Now close ALL open windows except HijackThis and click the Fix Checked button to finish the repair.

OK. Reboot your computer normally, start HijackThis and perform a new scan. Use the Add Reply button to post your new log file back here along with details of any problems you encountered performing the above steps and I will review it when it comes in.

OT
I do not respond to PM's requesting help. That's what the forums are here for. Please use them so that others may benefit from your questions and the responses you receive.

Hello OldTimer,

This is a long post...so I'll keep the chit-chat down. I'm sending you Registry, HJT Log, and Silent Runner Logs. Winshost.exe keeps reginerating itself after Normal and Safemode HJT "Fix Check". I tried to KillBox it (perhaps I did not type all the characters needed) but it would say "File Not Found".

Please advise. Kind Regards- alanjs

Hi alanjs. Killbox will only work if you have the full path to the file. If you did a search and could not find the file then it could be that it is already gone. It would more than likely be either in the c:\windows or c:\windows\system32 folders.

Let's try a different method to remove the entry from the startup list.

Launch Notepad, and copy/paste the text in the quotebox below into the new document. Save it to your desktop as regfix.reg :

REGEDIT4

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run]
"winshost.exe"=-

Locate regfix.reg on your Desktop and double-click on it. You will receive a prompt similar to: "Do you wish to merge the information into the registry?". Answer Yes and wait for a message to appear similar to Merged Successfully.

OK. Reboot your computer normally, start HijackThis and perform a new scan. Use the Add Reply button to post your new log file back here along with details of any problems you encountered performing the above steps and I will review it when it comes in.

Hi alanjs. Everything looks clean. Good job!

Feel free to move or delete anything you do not want that has accumulated on the desktop. If you delete it and need it in the future you can always download it again.

We have a couple of last steps to perform and then you're all set.

First, let's reset your hidden/system files and folders. System files are hidden for a reason and we don't want to have them openly available and susceptible to accidental deletion.
  • Click Start.
  • Open My Computer.
  • Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
  • Select the View tab.
  • Under the Hidden files and folders heading UNSELECT Show hidden files and folders.
  • CHECK the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
  • Click Yes to confirm.
  • Click OK.
Next, let's clean your restore points and set a new one:

Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove infected files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs from changing those files. This is the only way to clean these files: (You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected)
  • Turn off System Restore.
    • On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
    • Click Properties.
    • Click the System Restore tab.
    • CHECK Turn off System Restore.
    • Click Apply, and then click OK.
  • Restart your computer.
  • Turn ON System Restore.
    • On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
    • Click Properties.
    • Click the System Restore tab.
    • UN-Check Turn off System Restore.
    • Click Apply, and then click OK.
System Restore will now be active again.

Now that you are clean, to help protect your computer in the future I recommend the following free programs:
  • SpywareBlaster to help prevent spyware from installing in the first place.
  • SpywareGuard to catch and block spyware before it can execute.
  • IESpy-Ad to block access to malicious websites so you cannot be redirected to them from an infected site or email.
Ido not see an antivirus program installed and running on this computer. You should definitely have a good antivirus to stop infections before they can start and spread. Here are 2 free anti-virus programs that are available for personal use (I use these on various machines and they are both good):Youalready have a good firewall installed so you are all set with that.

It is best to have both a firewall and anti virus to protect your system and to keep them updated.

To keep your operating system up to date visit Microsoft Windows Update monthly. Microsoft puts out new updates on the 2nd Tuesday of every month so be sure to check regularly.

And to keep your system clean be aware of what emails you open, what websites you visit, and update and run these free malware scanners once a week:To learn more about how to protect yourself while on the internet read this article by Tony Klien: So how did I get infected in the first place?

Have a safe and happy computing day!
