When doing a "cold" start up, my Dell Inspiron 5160 sometimes hangs at the XP Pro Welcome screen. When it hangs, it's completely frozen - the cursor won't move. At that point I have to hold down the power button to shut it down. The hang never occurs during "warm" restarts, and usually happens maybe once in ten boot-ups ...just enough to lull you into a false sense of security :(

I tried doing a clean install of XP Pro. It seemed to work fine for a while but eventually the problem returned. I've run CHKDSK with all options applied many times - it never finds a problem or fixes anything. The BIOS has been updated to the latest version. I tried replacing the memory as well, but it made no difference.

Possible clues:

- There is no hard drive activity when the machine halts. When restarting after a freeze, the drive is always heavily fragmented.

- Every once in a while, the cursor will also freeze after waking from sleep mode. Again, I have to do a hard shut down & reboot to fix.

- Whenever the the freeze happens, none of the keys - including the "Caps Lock" key - will respond.

Any ideas on where to go from here would be most welcome :)
