Hello all- I'm running XP Media Center with SP3 installed.

Malwarebytes Pro Installed. Security Essentials installed.

Was able to run a scan w/ MWB last night, with no evil found. Attempted to update Security Essentials last night- but something is blocking updates via Microsoft.

Today, MWB pro won't open at all, gives error "run time error 372: failed to load control from ieframe.dll" etc.

Browser (IE8) will now not open.

All this appears related.

Anyone have any insight?

Thanks in advance!

Thanks for the move, hamluis.

Clearly I'm new to the forum. Hopefully someone has some insight.

Hello,if runing Spybot, disable it as it may stop MBAM (Malwarebytes)

1. Uninstall Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware using Add/Remove programs in the control panel.
2. Restart your computer (very important).
3. Download and run this utility.
4. It will ask to restart your computer (please allow it to).
5. After the computer restarts, install the latest version from here.
Before running MBAM again.do these...

Please click Start > Run, type inetcpl.cpl in the runbox and press enter.
Click the Connections tab and click the LAN settings option.
Verify if "Use a proxy..." is checked, if so, UNcheck it and click OK/OK to exit.

Please download Rkill by Grinler and save it to your desktop.Link 1
Link 2
  • Double-click on the Rkill desktop icon to run the tool.
  • If using Vista, right-click on it and Run As Administrator.
  • A black DOS box will briefly flash and then disappear. This is normal and indicates the tool ran successfully.
  • If not, delete the file, then download and use the one provided in Link 2.
  • If it does not work, repeat the process and attempt to use one of the remaining links until the tool runs.
  • If the tool does not run from any of the links provided, please let me know.
Do not reboot the computer, you will need to run the application again.

Now run MBAM and post the log.
The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab.
Copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply. Be sure to post the complete log to include the top portion which shows the database version and your operating system.

Well. I'm officially at a loss.

My IE is apparently corrupted and will not open. Tried to uninstall, with hopes of installing from removable storage, both with control panel/add remove hardware (initially would not populate) and from regedit with no success.

Did manage to uninstall MBAM manually from the regedit when control panel/add remove hardware would not populate.

Loaded above-indicated tools onto both a flash drive and CD from another machine, only to find that the "bad" PC no longer recognizes any flash drive (USB ports are operational, checked with USB mouse, which worked fine). Attempted to reactivate removable storage settings from services.msc with no success. Removable storage started, but still not working.

Also, the driver for my cd/dvd drive no longer works. Cannot reset or activate.

Basically, I have a functioning (mostly) computer that is totally locked down- no way to connect to or browse the internet, and no way to load any fixes via removable storage devices.

I'm about to take it to the trap range and fire away with me shotgun.

Help?

Hi,

My forum name is Dev00790 and I'll be helping you clean up your computer.

I will reply as soon as possible (typically within 24 hours). In turn, I ask that you please respond within 72 hours. If you know you will be away longer than that, I just ask for notice ahead of time.
Please be patient while I assist you.

Some points for you to keep in mind while I am helping you to make things go easier and faster for both of us:

  • Please do NOT run, install or uninstall any programs, unless instructed to do so.
    • We ask you to run different tools in a specific order to ensure the malware is completely removed from your machine, and running any additional tools may detect false positives, interfere with our tools, or cause unforeseen damage or system instability.
  • Please do not attach logs or use code boxes, just copy and paste the text.
    • Due to the high volume of logs we receive it helps to receive everything in the same format, and code boxes make the logs very difficult to read. Also, attachments require us to download and open the reports when it is easier to just read the reports in your post.
  • Please read every post completely before doing anything.
    • Pay special attention to the NOTE: lines, these entries identify an individual issue or important step in the cleanup process.
  • Please provide feedback about your experience as we go.
    • A short statement describing how the computer is working helps us understand where to go next, for example: I am still getting redirected, the computer is running normally, etc. Please do not describe the computer as "the same", this requires the extra step of looking back at your previous post.
  • I'm currently a trainee in the Malware Removal Training program and therefore my answers have to be checked by a Teacher before they get posted to you.
There may be a delay due to this. I apologize in advance if this happens. Hold tight while I get the first set of instructions out to you.

NOTE: At the top of your post, click on the Watch Topic Button, select Immediate Notification, and click on Proceed. This will send you an e-mail as soon as I reply to your topic, allowing us to resolve the issue faster.

NOTE: Backup any files that cannot be replaced. Removing malware can be unpredictable and this step can save a lot of heartaches if things don't go as planed. You can put them on a CD/DVD, external drive or a pen drive, anywhere except on the computer.

NOTE: It is good practice to copy and paste the instructions into notepad and print them in case it is necessary for you to go offline during the cleanup process. To open notepad, navigate to Start Menu > All Programs > Accessories > Notepad. Please remember to copy the entire post so you do not miss any instructions.

Regards, dev00790

Hi

Please do the following next:

:step1:

If you have Firefox or Chrome installed:

  • Using Firefox or Chrome, download the latest version of DDS by sUBs from one of the following links:
  • Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the DDS icon, and allow it to run.
  • DDS will now display a red window with an option screen called DDS: Settings
  • Mark the option attach.txt.
  • Click on Start.
  • If you did not disable a script-blocker that may be part of your antimalware program, you may receive a warning from your antimalware product asking if you would like DDS.com to run. Please allow it to do so.
  • DDS will automatically open both logfiles.
  • You can find them on your desktop as well.
  • Please post the content of those logfiles with your next answer.
Please note: You may have to disable any script protection running if the scan fails to run. After downloading the tool, disconnect from the internet and disable all antivirus protection. Run the scan, enable your A/V and reconnect to the internet.

Information on A/V control HERE

Note: If neither Firefox nor Chrome are installed, you can try via My Computer:

  • Open My computer via pressing the Windows key and E at the same time.
  • Copy the below:
    http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/dds.com

  • Paste it into the Address bar and press enter
  • Download DDS and save it to your desktop
  • Follow the instructions above from step 3.
