win7- 64bit on Sony VPCEE31FX Vaio a couple years old.
using external Dell monitor successfully for a couple years.
Starting today, I get blackouts, about 2 seconds duration, maybe 2 per hour, and each time I get a Desktop Windows Manager alert in the Task Bar.
When I click View Problem Details, I get event: APPCRASH and Application Name: DWM.exe.

I did some searching and found a suggestion to run a SFC scan to check for any corrupted files. I did and it found no difficulties.

Today I also had two Blue-Screens come up. The messages stay up maybe 15 seconds, so I couldn't copy much. First one suggested running Memory Check, which I would do if I could find it. I searched my computer and found no Memory Check. I ran Windows Memory Diagnostic Tool and found no memory errors.

The second one said System Service Exception.

Not sure what to try next...........

Had another System Service Exception BSOD today.

And Firefox is crashing and needs a restart, maybe once every 5 hours.

I tried to run chkdsk /f but report says I am not an administrator and need to run in an elevated mode. But I am, and this report says I am an administrator.

Hello ChuckNewman,

First, take care of Step #1 below, then run the check disk following this procedure:
  • Double click on the "(My) Computer" icon on your Desktop or Computer in your Start Menu.
  • Right click on the drive to test and click "Properties."
  • Select "Tools" tab and under "Error checking" click "Check now."
  • Make sure that only the following box is checked.
    • Automatically fix file system errors
  • Click "Start."
  • Click "Schedule disk check" then reboot your computer.

1. ) It appears that you are running two anti-virus applications. This can cause system instability, slow downs, and in rare cases, crashes.
  • Please uninstall one of the following:
  • HitmanPro 3.7 (Version: 3.7.0.185)
  • Microsoft Security Essentials (Version: 4.1.522.0)
  • My suggestion is to uninstall Hitman Pro as Microsoft Security Essentials is known for it's system stability; at least do it as a test until the problem resolves.

2. ) If you remove the external monitor, do you experience the same symptoms with the notebook display?

3. ) I would like to have a more detailed look at your recent minidump files. I will ask you to zip (compress) the most recent minidumps and attach them to your next post following the instructions below.

Please navigate to the the Windows Minidump folder.
  • C:\Windows\Minidump <== this folder.
  • Note that the first 6 digits of each minidump file indicate the date ( 122812-10935-01.dmp).
  • Highlight the most recent minidump files, right mouse click and select Send to -> Compressed (zipped) folder.
  • A Compressed (zipped) folder will appear in the Windows\Minidump folder.
    • Note: If you receive an access denied message or have trouble zipping the ".dmp" files, create a new folder on your Desktop (suggestion: Minidumps), then copy and paste the minidump files into that folder. Compress the folder.
  • When you click Add Reply for your next post, you will have the option to attach the compressed folder (see bottom, left).
  • Please attach the Compressed (zipped) folder to your next post by browsing to the location of the zipped Minidump folder.

    • Note: The Bleeping Computer Forum has a 512K upload limit on file size.
    • See how to Manage Your Attachments to delete old attachments.

Regards,
Brooks

I'm only down to step 1. Had to do a backup cuz of all the BSODs happening.
Blue Screen often refers to ntfs.sys
I ran CHKDSK twice and missed the final report both times.Stage 1 and 2 went okay.

I had no idea that Hitman was interactive. I got it to do standalone searches on request.
At any rate, it is now gone.

supper time.............

I'll run with notebook display when I return

Sounds good. :)

How to view the Check Disk log with Event Viewer:
  • In the search box type "Event" and click on "Event Viewer" in top column.
  • Click on "Windows Logs" -->"Application."
  • Click the "Source" tab ( top, right) to alphabetize that column.
  • Arrow down to "Wininit." It will be an Event ID: 1001.
  • Select the most recent Check Disk report.

Regards,
Brooks

I have 13 files in the Minidump folder. When
I try to send them to Zip folder, the folder
is created okay BUT then a message comes up
File Not found or no read permission. I'll
try the second option.

btw it's been some time since a bsod.
maybe the disconnected mouse is the ticket?

okay, here's the mini-dumps zipped.
you give great directions but it takes me forever to work all this out, step by step. especially withoout a mouse.

I'm starting to think it's all over a bad mouse. No troubles in quite a while.

I don't find attachment option here in Fast Reply. I'll look elsewhere.
