This is my first posting to this forum (so I hope I got it right)

I'm running Windows XP that I believe is up to date in terms of MS updates. I'm finding that my internet access is slowing to a crawl at irregular intervals. Task manager does not seem to indicate anything is out of the ordinary when this happens. Non-internet access (using MS Word, etc.) still seems fine when this happens. I have run adaware and Spybot S&D and found nothing recognizable either. Once it happens, I need to shut down both systems on my home network and cycle the power on the router and DSL model. A simple reboot of the computers does not seem to do it. In terms of performance drops, I've seen download speed drop below 1k/sec.

I'm encountering no popups or apparent hijacks when I web browse. Although I have an outdated Norton Systemworks installed on my system, I normally use AVG for my virus scans. I have followed your "before you post" instructions (the only exception is that I have to run the on-line Panda app since the installable version says that I have to uninstall AVG first since they are not compatable). They all (Housecall, Panda, Bit Defender and Stinger) say my system is clean now.

I don't know if it's connected, but my "explorer.exe" sometimes begins to run away with all of the CPU cycles and has to be terminated (using task manager) and then restarted. I suspect that that may be an unrelated issue though.

What could be connected is that when I login, Spybot's tea timer reports a registry change.
When I approve the change, a second "white list" change is reported. If I run Spybot S&D and use the "resident" tool, it reports them as...
3/26/2006 6:18:30 PM Allowed value "msnappau" (new data: "") deleted in System Startup global entry!
3/26/2006 6:18:30 PM Allowed value "Search Bar" (new data: "") deleted in Browser page!

I don't know if they are valid or not.

Here is my hijack this log...

Hello bart_central and welcome to the BC HijackThis forum. I do not see any signs of viruses or malware in the log. There are a couple of housekeeping items we can take care of so let's do that while you are here.

Start HijackThis and click the Scan button to perform a scan. Look for the following items and click in the checkbox in front of each item to select it:O2 - BHO: (no name) - {FDD3B846-8D59-4ffb-8758-209B6AD74ACC} - (no file)
O16 - DPF: {739E8D90-2F4C-43AD-A1B8-66C356FCEA35} -
O16 - DPF: {99CDFD87-F97A-42E1-9C13-D18220D90AD1} -
O16 - DPF: {CAFEEFAC-0014-0000-0000-ABCDEFFEDCBA} (Java Runtime Environment 1.4.0) -

Now close ALL open windows except HijackThis and click the Fix Checked button to finish the repair.

Next, decide which anti-virus program you want to keep (AVG or Norton) and uninstall the other one. Running 2 anti-virus apps simultaneously can cause many issues including file access issues.

The msnappau file is a part of the MSN toolbar. If something is blocking it, this could cause issues with the MSN Toolbar and web surfing. I do not use the MSN Toolbarso I can't tell you everything it ties in to but if it being prevented from running then something isn't going to work properly.

Other than that you are good to go. If you are still having issues then post a question in the Web Browsing forum for help on non-malware related browsing issues.

Cheers.

OT
I do not respond to PM's requesting help. That's what the forums are here for. Please use them so that others may benefit from your questions and the responses you receive.
