Hi,

I have read a similar problem on Win 7 forum: when I use windows explorer (to search a files) it crashes, when i use the control panel (to search a topic) it crashes, when i search a program (using the metro gui) it crashes and restart.
I'm using Win 8 Pro on a Sony Vaio VPC23 (i7-2670QM 2.20 GHz; 6GB RAM).

I cheched for files system error (no error found). I ran sfc /scannow and it has found only 2 errors that sfc was not able to repair:

I see that you tried to install a fix it. Was it this one?

http://support.microsoft.com/mats/windows_search/en-us

If not please run the above fix it and see if it helps.

Also are you using an antivirus program? If so, if you disable the real-time protection and do a search, does the problem continue?

About the fix setup error: i tryed to install a wrong fixit solution (for win7) and that gave me that error. Then i found the right one (for Win 8, that is the same link you posted) and i ran with this result:

Attached File  FixiT Result.pdf   274.18KB   5 downloads

I use Windows Defender + Windows Firewall. I stopped and disabled both services. Then rebooted and the error is still there.

I also tryed these:
- rebuild the index
- change the location of the index
- disable and enable the search component ("Turn Windows Feautures on or off" option).

I am very frustrated about this error also because it happens on a clean install PC.

Thank for your help...

At this point you may want to consider refreshing Windows 8.

In that case I prefer to restore an image that i taken with True Image sw just after the setup.

But i don't understand: if this error happened with a new and clean Win 8 setup, why you think it could be resolve with a refresh?

tnx, Giovanni

Sorry for the delay. I did not see your notificaiton.

Have you tried creating another account and see if the error persists?

I created a new account and when i use this I don't have any errors!
The errors continue if I use my original account.
What this could mean?
Does exist a way to fix the search component problem on my original account without refresh Windows?

This is a strange one because the indexes are global and should be used by the all accounts, which makes me think that they are not corrupt.

Something must have gotten corrupted in your original accounts config. Did you ever use a registry repair program on that computer?

Yes, I used a registry repair program but only after continuous and repeated occurrence of the search problem.

At this point I wonder if I can use the following way to solve the problem:
- Create a new user type administrator (the new test user that i created now was a normal one)
- Move the documents location (and others) from the old to the new user
- Delete the old user (with registry corrupt)

Do you think it can work?

It can't hurt in trying. Instead of moving the files, just copy them over instead that way you do not do any permanent damage to your existing profile.

Solved!

After creating a new admin user I moved all my files on the new user and now i don't have any more the errors using search.
So it was something corrupted in my original accounts config (registry?).

Thanks for your help; in this way I solved without refrishing Win 8.
bye, Giovanni

Yes, most likely a registry or data store corruption.

Thanks for letting us know how you resolved it!
