My Dell Laptop running xp pro goes from what was acceptable speed to running like a 95 year old granny. I have as few as possible programs start on boot up, run CCleaner often, and use MS Security Essentials which is up to date. It takes a long time to boot up from shut down, I get "This program is not responding" messages too frequently, and at times it's as if it has to think about completing even the simplest of tasks. Wondering if it's just wearing out, or needs to be re-formatted, or possibly something simple (I should be so lucky). Your thoughts and/or help would be appreciated.

Happy Holidays

Hello -
From the top it sounds like an infection, or incorrect installed programs - We will look at the second option first -

You could list the Make and Model of computer and post a snapshot with Speccy as this may give us a bit more to look at -
Publish a Snapshot using Speccy << Follow These Directions

Please download MiniToolBox, save it to your desktop and run it.

Checkmark the following boxes:

•Flush DNS
•Report IE Proxy Settings
•Reset IE Proxy Settings
•Report FF Proxy Settings
•Reset FF Proxy Settings
•List content of Hosts
•List IP configuration
•List last 10 Event Viewer log
•List Installed Programs
List devices >>(Problem only)<<
•List Users, Partitions and Memory size.
•List Minidump Files

Click Go and copy / paste the result (Result.txt) in your next reply -

Note: When using "Reset FF Proxy Settings" option Firefox should be closed.

Thanks -

Hello -
Download Security Check by Screen317 from HERE or HERE, and save it to your Desktop.
* Double-click SecurityCheck.exe
* Follow the onscreen instructions inside of the black box.
* A Notepad document should open automatically called checkup.txt; please post the contents of that document.

Hi -
It seems like you may have 2 Antivirus programs running at the same time. Please remove Ad-Aware and leave MSE installed

This version of AdAware program should not be run in tandem with other security programs.
If you are experiencing problems with the Safe Browsing element of AdAware, it is advised to completely uninstall the entire software package and choose another security product.

A note from Ad-Aware program site, Re: running actively along side other Antivirus programs -

MSE Antivirus up to date! (On Access scanning disabled!) << Open MSE > Settings > Real Time Protection > Tick the box > "Turn on Real Time Protection" > Close the program.

Please check for Updates for your Malwarebytes program, as the current version is 1.70.1100 now. Open the program and click the Update Tab and then "Check For Updates" -
Run a Quick scan only and post the log back here.
If your version will not update to this, please tell me so that we can fix it -

Also open SUPERAntiSpyware program and check for updates -
Run a Quick scan only and post the log back here.

NOTE - Defragment your hard drive soon! (Do NOT defrag if SSD!)
First: Go - Start > Progrms > Accessories > System Tools > Disk CleanUp. I usually tick all boxes.
NOTE: This will take a while to run > Click OK at the end. This will clean up and compress quite a lot of files.

Next, Go - Start >Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Disk Defragmenter and run the program, this will also take quite a while

Post back when this is finished and I will add a bit more -

Thank You -

Regarding Adaware, I've actually tried to uninstall it before using the Control Panel>Add/Remove Programs, and although it shows up, the "remove" button is not there. I've tried reinstalling it from Lavasoft, but it only goes so far saying there is already a copy installed. Bottom line is I don't know how to remove it. Your thoughts on this?

I'll work on the other 2 scans in the meantime and will run defrag tonight.

thank you again.

A lot of us use Revo Uninstaller to remove stubborn programs.

Hello -
These are just a few precautions to watch when using Revo Uninstaller -

1) First we download it from here: Revo Uninstaller Free Version. You can skip this Step if you already have it installed.
However, you may need to update it. If you have it installed already, and you need to update it, go ahead and open it up and click the AutoUpdate Icon next to Help.
The use of this program makes registry changes based upon what you select for removal from the Registry.
Before running Revo Uninstaller please run ERUNT before proceeding to back up your registry in case you make a mistake.

2) Select the Program to remove from the list of programs and click the Uninstall button:

Posted Image

3) After selecting the program you want to remove, and confirming you want to uninstall the program, then you will want to select the Advanced Option:

4) Click Next. This will start the uninstaller for the application you picked. When the uninstaller is done, and it proves to be successful, and a reboot is required, then select NO and continue the below steps.

5) Follow the prompts during the uninstallation of the application. Once it closes you will be at this window:

Posted Image

6) Click Next again. Once the window is done scanning for files and other things that did not get removed, you will be presented with this window:

Posted Image

.

You will want to select only the bolded items, then click on Delete. If any entries-usually the last thing listed and not in bold-have a + sign click on the + until you see more bolded items.
Once done, click Next.

If it asks you to delete other files, then do so, but always pay attention to the warnings.

Thank You -

Hello -
While I am posting here, I may as well include a few fixes and Updates that are showing in the logs that you have posted.
Note that most are normal updates etc that are required, and some general advice for you to review in your own time.
If you do have any questions, please always ask prior to moving to your next steps :)

Please read, or at the very least, scan the list of Slow Computer? Use this troubleshooting checklist at the top of the XP forum area

Now please see the help @ Post #2 in What does Fault bucket 1180947459 mean as this is one of your errors that show under "Application errors"

Java version out of Date!
1. Update your Java version here: http://www.java.com/en/download/installed.jsp
Note 1: UNCHECK any pre-checked toolbar and/or software offered with the Java update. The pre-checked toolbars/software are not part of the Java update.
Note 2: The Java Quick Starter (JQS.exe) adds a service to improve the initial startup time of Java applets and applications.
If you don't want to run another extra service, go to Start > Control Panel > Java > Advanced > Miscellaneous and uncheck the box for Java Quick Starter. Click OK and restart your computer.

2. Now, we need to remove old Java version and its remnants...
Download JavaRa to your desktop and unzip it.
•Run JavaRa.exe, pick the language of your choice and click Select. Then click Remove Older Versions.
•Accept any prompts.
•Do NOT post any offered JavaRa log.
Now check in Control Panel > Add / Remove to make sure that no older versions are still installed (Version7 Update10 is current)

Note - Adobe Reader has now been updated to Version XI (11).
NOTE - During download please Uncheck any pre-checked add-on tool bars, as they are not required or part of the update.

Finally - For some System Errors -
Please download Farbar Service Scanner and run it on the computer with the issue.
•Make sure the following options are checked:
  • Internet Services
  • Windows Firewall
  • System Restore
  • Security Center
  • Windows Update
  • Windows Defender
•Press "Scan".
•It will create a log (FSS.txt) in the same directory the tool is run.
•Please copy and paste the log to your reply.

Sorry to give you this much in one hit, but take your time and read back from where you were at last time -

Thank You -

Ok, here's what's I've done:

Been through the Trouble Shooting Checklist,
Ran Defrag,
Updated Adobe Reader and Java,
Downloaded Javara and ran,
Updated and ran Malware Bytes, log already posted
Updated and ran SuperAntiSpyware, only found 2 tracking cookies which I deleted,
Ran Farbar, log below,
Downloaded Revo (pro ver. for 30 day free trial) but Ad-Aware didn't show up, but it still shows on the Add/Remove list and still without the option to remove. I have re-run Security Check and the new log is below Farbar.

I think that brings me current with what you have asked. Anything else I should do?

Thanks again.

Hello uvantu -
You have done very well with all of those items.

I notice that Ad-Aware AAWService.exe is disabled! is no longer listed in Security Check ??

There is only one last place to look for Lavasoft or Ad-Ware, if you wish.
Go - Programs > Accessories > Windows Explorer > Click the + beside My Computer > Click the + beside Local Disk C: > Click the + beside Program Files -
See if there is anything related to Lavasoft or AdAware listed there (usually listed Alphabetically) - (I just found a program I thought I removed yesterday).
Just Right Click > Delete it if you do find any entry -

If there is nothing listed, we will not play any deeper in the registry area to try and find this for now.

Your Original Install date lists 07 September 2007, so this is a long time to go without any major problems, especially an early Dell. So while in Windows Explorer see if there are older programs that you will not use any more on a regular basis. You can always reinstall them later if you think you would like to. (Just a Manual Clean-Up)

As a quick check, please go - Control Panel > System > Hardware > Device Manager, and see if there are any Red or Yellow (! or ? ) marks beside any items.
Please note or post a Screen shot if there are any items marked.

If not we will next run a simple Disk Check to see if anything is failing in that area.

Go Start > Run Box > Type or copy/paste chkdsk /r in the box and press Enter or click OK .A message will pop up asking to schedule the check. Type Y press Enter and >Restart< your computer. This will take (on average) 1 to 2 hours depending on your system, so grab a coffee and watch it if you wish, or just let it run.
Your computer will reboot back to Normal Mode once all 5 stages have completed -

Now Go - Start > Programs and find Startup. You should not have more than 1 or 2 items listed there. If there are please note them and we can select what to remove.

Has anything at all improved since we started looking at your problem - Or are things about the same.

Thank You -

Hi Nok,

I ran Disk check, (which actually took overnight to complete), and nothing showed up from that. Also no flagged items in Device Manager. Ad-Aware doesn't show up in the program file list but still shows up in the Add/Remove list without the "remove" button so I don't know if it's still lurking in there or not.

As to how the machine is running, well I would't say it's running noticeably better, but not any worse either. It still has to think about doing many tasks, like opening programs like "Word" or "Outlook", or processing incoming e-mail, and I still get "This program is not responding" messages. If I run CCleaner, that seems to help for a little while, like a day or so.

Thanks again.
