Here's one I can't find a solution to. I see black screen problems on install and boot up while checking the NET but not what I have. All of a sudden when I click on Control panel, file explorer, my computer or any system type event I get a black screen. I also get it when using Outlook e-mail. It opens fine but when I close it I get the black screen as well. I then have to bring up task manager and log off again. I tried a system restore and an fsc scannow. Neither help or find the problem. I also am having a problem where I click on Google Chrome at the start menu. It will start, then close, and then bring me to the (conventional looking) desktop. There I can open Chrome and it works fine. This just started as well also. If I log off and then log back in I get my desktop back. Win 8 is new to me so I'm not familiar if there is other tools I can try. I don't believe it's anything to do with my (self built) PC because this was working fine for a few weeks. The problem just started recently. The only new program I installed was Spybot S & D. You would figure that if that was the problem system restore would fix it. AVG has caught potential viruses but I don't believe there is any active on my system. The black screen doesn't show up when I use any of my 3rd party software. I.E. - Power Director, Nero, etc. Any idea's/help is appreciated. I hope you have a great holiday everyone.

Hello Larry,

What version of Spybot S & D is this ? Is it set to auto-load (start) with Windows ? Might I suggest you insure it is -not- set to auto-start.

When things go "black" ....you only get a "black" screen? No other descriptive text?

Download DDS and save it to your desktop from http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/dds.com here
or http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/dds.scr or
http://www.infospyware.net/sUBs/dds

Disable any script blocker if your antivirus/antimalware has it.
Then RIGHT click dds.scr and select Run as Administrator to start AND respond positively to run it when prompted.
DDS will run in a command prompt window and will take 3 to 4 minutes or so.

  • When done, DDS will open two (2) logs:
  • DDS.txt
  • Attach.txt
  • Save both reports to your desktop.
Please Copy & Paste contents of the following logs in your next reply:
DDS.txt
Attach.txt

Thanks for responding Maurice. Spybot is the newest version I guess. Spybot 2 v2.0.12.0 and is not set to auto start on boot up. Yes, I only get a black screen, no text to give me a clue on the problem. This is strange because today I was editing videos and was able to access file explorer. Halfway through the vid editing the black screen started again. I put win 8 in about 2 weeks ago I guess and it was working fine. This just started several days ago. The only things I have done were run spybot, and MS media center which they are giving free license to until January (then you have to buy). I don't download off of the NET unless it's a reputable company. I have not visited any of the common malware sites (i.e. - porn sites, free wallpapers/games, etc). Here's the logs you ask for.

I'd suggest you uninstall Checkpoint Zonealarm and restart the system. Then turn on the Windows firewall.
If you have a hardware router between your pc and the incoming internet modem, then the Windows built-in firewall is sufficient.
Then see if the black screen issue is gone.

Also, earlier you mentioned you had built this system yourself, I'd urge you to do a thorough test of your physical RAM memory. Bad or marginal RAM may be the cause of your black screen.
MS Windows memory diagnostic tool WINDIAG
http://oca.microsoft.com/en/windiag.asp

The Windows Memory Diagnostic tests the Random Access Memory (RAM) on your computer for errors. The diagnostic includes a comprehensive set of memory tests. If you are experiencing problems while running Windows, you can use the diagnostic to determine whether the problems are caused by failing hardware, such as RAM or the memory system of your motherboard. Windows Memory Diagnostic is designed to be easy and fast. On most configurations, you can download the diagnostic, read the documentation, run the test and complete the first test pass in less than 30 minutes.

To run Windows Memory Diagnostic, you must reboot your computer with the disk or CD-ROM on which you installed Windows Memory Diagnostic in the drive. After the reboot, Windows Memory Diagnostic will load and its interface will appear. After loading, the first test pass will begin, using the default standard test suite, and continue until complete, unless Windows Memory Diagnostic is either paused or exited. Once the first test pass is complete, Windows Memory Diagnostic will begin a second test pass using the same settings as before. Windows Memory Diagnostic will continue to run test passes until you exit.

Well, I uninstalled Zone Alarm and everything seems to be working..for now. Like I said, it was working yesterday for a while as well then went back to the black screen. I'll post back tomorrow with results pro or con. I know about the router firewall deal but Windows doesn't give pop ups like ZA. I like to know what's trying to get in or out. I'll check the firewall out in Win 8 maybe it works differently than XP's did. just an fyi since I know you help people, that link to "windiag" is a dead one. Thanks Maurice.

2 days later and the black screen problem has not returned. Thanks again Maurice. I wouldn't have thought that ZA was the problem. ESPECIALLY since it is "Window 8 compatible"....lol. Have a Happy New Year.
