Hello all!

I'm new to this forum so please excuse me if this is posted in the wrong place. I've been having an ongoing problem with an EXTREMELY SLOW PC! It will stall/hang/freeze for up to 15 minutes at times, just by opening simple files, programs, or just navigating websites and/or loading web pages. It also will crash/re-boot at random for no apparent reason. <-(Even when sitting idle this happens.) I de-frag regularly and I've run CHKDSK to see if I had a hardware problem but it comes back fine. I first thought it was a virus/spyware/malware so I scanned with Trend Micro 2013. It did find a few things so they were deleted. The problem was still there, so I scanned again and found nothing. I then asked the wonderful people at spywarewarrior.com for help with my problem. After extensive searching and removing items with several tools I was assured that there's no type of malware hiding on my PC. HOWEVER, I still have the problem. This is why they referred me here as they are malware specialists and nothing more. Here is a link to show what I've done already. http://www.spywarewarrior.com/viewtopic.php?p=229527#229527. The main problem we found was the available space on my C:/ partition. It was critically low! I removed ALL unnecessary files, folders, restore points, and programs and still only managed to free up 3GB of space on a 20GB partition. I had this very same problem a while back when I only had 10GB allotted. <-(C:/ was filling up but the speed was fine and no hang-ups or crashes) I doubled the partition thinking it would be more than enough space, but after time it has filled once again. Since the drastic slow down and crashes, I now have 40GB allotted for the C:/ partition but still did not solve my problems. Something seems to be writing to my hard disk. In the past 6 months I've re-sized my partition twice but have NOT fixed my problem. I have also run Startuplite to try and remove any unnecessary programs, but it finds NOTHING unnecessary. For the life of me I can't figure out where this space is going or why my PC runs so very SLOW, and freezes and/or re-boots at random. PLEASE HELP! I don't want to resort to reformatting and reloading windows unless it's ABSOLUTELY necessary.

Thanks

Hello Artrooks

Thanks for the reply. I can't believe I didn't catch that. I looked over those logs a lot of times. Guess they start to run together after too long. Here is the log and Speccy link you requested.
I REALLY APPRECIATE your help with this. I wonder what else I may have missed.

I looks as if the check disk did not complete.

It would make sense to test both of your Seagate hard drives in view of the previous error report.

  • Download the Seatools for DOS version by clicking the "Downloads" tab, selecting operating system, then "Download - accept license agreement. Burn the "SeaToolsDOS223ALL.Iso" image to a CD so it is bootable.

Here is a good reference: Seatools for DOS tutorial.
  • If you don't have software burn an "Iso" image or if you don't now how to then:
  • Download ImgBurn from here.
  • Install the software then start ImgBurn.
  • Select "Write Image file to disk" then under "Source" click on the "folder icon" Posted Image to the right and select the "iso" file location.
  • Click on this icon to "Start." Posted Image
[/list]
  • Restart your computer with the Diagnostic Disk. (For how to set CDROM drive to boot first, go here)
  • Your hard drive(s) should be listed in the Drives List box.
  • If you have more than one drive, test them both, starting with the system drive first.
  • Highlight your system drive within the Drive List.
  • From the top menu, click on Basic Tests and run the Short test first and then the Long test.
  • If bad blocks are found during a Long test, a prompt will ask how to proceed.
    • Because there is a chance of some data loss with the repair, select Skip This One and All Remaining, unless you have backed up all important data on the drive.
  • Any reported errors in either test should make you suspect a failing hard drive.

Please let us know the results.

Regards,
Brooks

Hello Artrooks

I'm a bit confused. You say to download the SeaTools for DOS but then you say "Select your operating system". Not sure what program you want me to install. Please advise.

Hello again.

I have no mouse control at all when trying to install and run Seatool DOS. I assume that since I'm using a usb wireless the ports are not yet activated on the pc. After a while of searching I can not locate my old (Corded) mouse to see if that would rectify my problem. Any ideas?

Merry Christmas to you and yours!

Merry Christmas.

If your keyboard works in DOS, you don't need the mouse.
  • Boot from the SeaTools for DOS CD.
  • Press <Enter> at the license agreement.
  • You should see both hard drives in the Drive List.
  • Note that the top drive has a check mark. That is the drive to be tested.
  • Press the "S" key for the dropdown menu under Basic Tests.
    • Use the down arrow key to select "Long Test" and then press <Enter>.
  • The test may take an hour or two to complete.
  • Test both drives.
    • To test the second drive, use the "Tab" key.
    • Gently tap the "Tab" key and the focus will shift to "Basic Tests" > "Language" -> "Log file" -> top hard drive."
    • With the first (top) hard drive highlighted, use the arrow down key to highlight the second drive and then press the "spacebar" to checkmark the second drive.
  • When the tests have completed, press the "S" key to give focus to the top menu, arrow over to Exit, and press <Enter>.
  • Both drives should report a "Pass" from the Long Test.

If neither keyboard nor mouse work in DOS, you will have to attempt to enter "Setup" and enable USB Legacy support or borrow a PS2 mouse.

Regards,
Brooks

Hello Artrooks

Just got back home from our Holiday travels. Hope you had a merry Christmas. For the life of me I can't find my old Ps2 mouse anywhere! Since I also use a wireless keyboard my only other option is trying to enter setup and enable USB Legacy support. I'll let you know what happens.

Hello Artrooks

I'm deeply sorry for the very late reply. My pc HDD finally crashed! I was able to boot for quite some time even though it was showing bad sectors. I recently purchased a 1TB seagate HDD. After installing I used program I have called EASEUS partition magic. It will allow very easy partition creation as well as total disk copying. I've used it in the past to "Ghost" one drive to another. Unfortunately for me it didn't work so well this time. I had saved an old HDD that had my original files folders and os. This is the very same thing i did to copy my very old hdd to the most recent with the bad sectors. however I could not get the latter hdd to read or boot so i couldn't get it copied/"Ghosted" to the new seagate. I ended up coping the very old back up drive to it. Now it seams i lost all my ld tools/programs/ and some very important info that was on it. Do you know of anyway to get it (the bad disk with bad sectors) back up and running so it will boot? This way i can try to copy it again to regain my lost info. I really hate to use it and then have to re-install my lost items. I can't even remember half of it! I was never able to get it to boot to the seagate boot disk/cd-rom you had me make. Not sure why but i believe it's because i never got an old ps2 mouse and my keyboard is usb also. This probably explains why i had no control once it booted from the cd-rom. What do you think? I had the wonderful peeps at spywarewarrior go completely over the disk w/bad sectors so i know it was very clean. However the new/old backup hdd i used to ghost to the new 1TB seagate was NEVER cleaned. i'm afraid i may have copied some infections to my brand new HDD! Any way just want to clean it and/or just copy the bad sector hdd info to the new? Seems like the new hdd is even slower than the one w/ the bad sectors. I just don't get it unless i said earlier i had inadvertently infected it while coping from my very old copy of my drive. It had NEVER been cleaned. Never had the need to do so since i had a much larger backup already to go in case of a crash/problem. Worked GREAT until it started slowing way down due to bad sectors.

Thanks for all your help.

Hello,

Do you know of anyway to get it (the bad disk with bad sectors) back up and running so it will boot?

None that I am proficient with. That would be the realm of data recovery specialists.

The only suggestion that I can make is to try to attach the recently failed drive as a slave to a functioning computer. If the slaved drive spins, you may be able to rescue documents, photos, etc, but not programs.

Good luck.

Regards,
Brooks
