Hello and thanks for helping in advance :thumbsup:

I have a Windows XP Service Pack 2. I used to have Norton Internet Security antivirus, but I uninstalled it a month or so ago. For the last two or three weeks, my task manager has not been working, and it displays a message saying that the task manager has been disabled by the administrator. I have also tried typing regedit in the Run window, as was advised in a few help websites but I found that it too has been disabled, and I strongly suspect that some virus is lurking in the computer. I am currently not using any antivirus programs. I downloaded ComboFix, as was suggested in the help websites and tried to run it, but it gave an error message that the contents of Combofix had been modified and I cannot use it, and some file modification virus like Viruit was there in the computer. The internet browser (I use Google Chrome) seems to be working fine, but when I try to go to the Kaspersky's official website, the browser says that there is a server error, while my internet connection is working fine. I also have malewarebytes and I ran a scan with it, and these were the only malicious items detected:

Registry Data Items Detected: 2
HKCU\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System|DisableRegistryTools (PUM.Hijack.Regedit) -> Bad: (1) Good: (0) -> No action taken.
HKCU\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System|DisableTaskMgr (PUM.Hijack.TaskManager) -> Bad: (1) Good: (0) -> No action taken.

Even after running Malewarebytes, I am still not able to run the task manager or regedit. Could you please help me in fixing my computer? I tried to look at system restore, but the longest ago a restore date was around two days ago, when my computer was already affected with virus. I also tried to start the computer in safe mode, but it is not working and when I select the safe mode, it displays several lines and reboots again.

Could you please help me ?
Thank you again.

**** End of log ****

The FSS scanner and the SecurityCheck.exe did not run due to some error caused by Microsoft C++ re-distributive or something of that sort.

THANKS FOR HELPING AGAIN

PS:The trojans displayed in MBAM are not removed even when I restart the computer. When I ask MBAM to remove the items, it says that the viruses are successfully removed but when I run the scan again after restart, the items just turn up again.

You did fine :)

Download Malwarebytes Anti-Rootkit from HERE
  • Unzip downloaded file.
  • Open the folder where the contents were unzipped and run mbar.exe
  • Follow the instructions in the wizard to update and allow the program to scan your computer for threats.
  • DO NOT click on the Cleanup button. Simply exit the program.
  • When done, please post the two logs produced they will be in the MBAR folder..... mbar-log-xxxxx.txt and system-log.txt

It looks like more advanced tools will be needed.

Please follow the instructions in ==>This Guide<== starting at Step 6. If you cannot complete a step, skip it and continue.

Once the proper logs are created, then make a NEW TOPIC and post it ==>HERE<== Please include a description of your computer issues, what you have done to resolve them, and a link to this topic.

If you can produce at least some of the logs, then please create the new topic and explain what happens when you try to create the log(s) that you couldn't get. If you cannot produce any of the logs, then still post the topic and explain that you followed the Prep. Guide, were unable to create the logs, and describe what happens when you try to create the logs.

It would be helpful if you post a note here once you have completed the steps in the guide and have started your topic in malware removal. Good luck and be patient.

If HelpBot replies to your topic, PLEASE follow Step One so it will report your topic to the team members.
