IE does not appear to be crashing anymore, but Java is still acting strange and WMP still won't open. ("internal error").
I managed to download a newer version of Hijack This, and have included the log. Thanks in advance for any help you can give.

Hello Macavity and welcome to the BC HijackThis forum. After reviewing your log I see a few items that require our attention. Please print these directions and then proceed with the following steps in order.

First, we need to move HJT to it's own folder.

Important
Your copy of HijackThis needs to be in a folder of it's own. If it is run from Temporary folders the backups and HijackThis itself could be accidentally deleted if the Temporary folders are cleaned. If it is run from the desktop then the backup files and folders can clutter up the desktop and be accidentally deleted. If it is run from inside a compressed file then the backups are not created at all.
  • Please open My Computer
  • Double-click on Local Disk (C:)
  • Click on the File menu, point to New and then click on Folder. Name the folder 'HijackThis' or 'HJT'.
  • Unzip to or copy and paste HijackThis.exe to the new folder (do not run HijackThis directly out of the sfx or compressed file).
Step #1

Download Cwshredder.exe and save it to a folder of its own. Start the program and click on the Check for Update button. If an update is available then download and install it. Close the program (do not run it yet).

Download AboutBuster.zip and unzip it to its own directory.

Download CCleaner and install it but do not run it yet.

Now physically disconnect from the internet (unplug the telephone or broadband cable from the computer).

Step #2

We need to make sure all hidden files are showing so please:
  • Click Start.
  • Open My Computer.
  • Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
  • Select the View tab.
  • Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
  • Uncheck the Hide file extensions for known types option.
  • Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
  • Click Yes to confirm.
  • Click OK.
Step #3

Start HijackThis and click the Scan button to perform a scan. Look for the following items and click in the checkbox in front of each item to select it:R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer,Search = http://nkvd.us (obfuscated)
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer,Search = http://nkvd.us (obfuscated)

Now close ALL open windows except HijackThis and click the Fix Checked button to finish the repair.

Reboot normally and run at least 2 of the following on-line virus scans:Bitdefender <<<Add a check by 'Autoclean'.
eTrust <<<'Cure' whatever is found, then delete if unsuccessful
Housecall <<<Put on 'Autoclean' and delete what it can't clean.
Panda ActiveScan <<<Accept default settings
If there are any files that cannot be automatically disinfected or quarantined then you will need to delete them manually.

Step #8

If you do not already have Ad-Aware SE 1.06 then follow these download and setup instructions: Ad-Aware SE Setup. Otherwise, just check for updates.

Start Ad-aware SE, click the Start button and choose Perform Full System Scan. Click the Next button and wait for the scan to complete. If anything was found, right-click on the list and choose Select All and remove all it finds.

Step #9

OK. Reboot your computer normally, start HijackThis and perform a new scan. Use the Add Reply button to post your new log file and the AboutBuster log file back here along with details of any problems you encountered performing the above steps and I will review it when it comes in.

Thanks for your help, OT!

I followed the instructions that you posted, but had trouble running those four on-line virus scans. Some would only open up a blank page. Some would not open at all. I instead ran scans that were already downloaded to my computer:
SpyBot Search and Destroy, which for the first time ever came back with no threats, which I take as a good sign. I also ran AVG Anti-virus, which also found nothing.

Now, I still can't open Windows Media Player (Error message: "An internal application error has occurred."), and I'm still dealing with Javascript problems (for example, I can't change the color of the text in this reply window, etc.), but those may be altogether different issues. (Though the first instances of these errors did coincide with this recent infection.)

First, here is the AboutBuster log file:

AboutBuster 6.01

HomeSearch Service stopped if present

Hi Macavity. The log looks pretty good. All of the major items are now gone but I think something might be in there yet. Let's try an Ewido scan.

Download and install the trial version of the ewido security suite. Update the program and then close it. Do not run it yet.

Start in Safe Mode Using the F8 method:
  • Restart the computer.
  • As soon as the BIOS is loaded begin tapping the F8 key until the boot menu appears.
  • Use the arrow keys to select the Safe Mode menu item.
  • Press the Enter key.
Start ewido and do the following:
  • Click on the Scanner button.
  • Click on the Complete System Scan.
  • If anything is found you will be prompted to clean the first infected file found. Choose Clean and put a checkmark in the checkbox for Perform action on all infections and click the Ok button to continue the scan.
  • When the scan is complete close ewido and reboot the computer normally.
Post the Ewido log back here and I will review the information when it comes in.

Cheers.

Well, I did the Ewido scan in safe mode, but I have not been able to figure out where my computer sved the scan log. It's not in My Documents. It's not in the same file as the Ewido program. I've been looking for it for quite a while, but I give up.

As to my computer's behavior, I'm still having trouble with WMP and RealPlayer and several websites have told me that I need to enable Javascripts in order to use them. Is this the same problem or are these separate issues?

Oh, the "Help and Support" function on my computer doesn't appear to be working either.

Hi Macavity. The log file would be named report.txt and would have been saved to wherever it was told to. It doesn'tautomatically save the report.

If you can't find it then go ahead and post a new HijackThis log and I'll see where we are at.

Cheers.

Right. I thought that it would prompt me for a location when it saved initially, but it didn't. maybe it never saved a scan at all.

Anyway, here are the results of the latest Hijack This scan:

Hi Macavity. I only see 1 item left to fix so let's take care of that.

Start HijackThis and click the Scan button to perform a scan. Look for the following items and click in the checkbox in front of each item to select it:O16 - DPF: {11111111-1111-1111-1111-111111111732} - file://c:\progra~1\pl.exe
Now close ALL open windows except HijackThis and click the Fix Checked button to finish the repair.

Locate this file and if it is not alreadygone delete it:c:\program files\pl.exe
uninstall and reinstall the following programs (and any others which are not working properly:Java
RealPlayer
WMP

Let me know what happens.

Cheers.

Did the final HijackThis fix that you posted, and attempted to uninstall and re-install WMP to no avail. I can't download Java or Real Player at all. I've also begun to notice that my computer is slowing down if I get too many windows open at once. According to my computer I still have 25 GB of available C Drive space. I'm stumped.

Hi Macavity. What happens when you try to uninstall WMP or download Java and RealPlayer?

Welli, in the case of WMP, everything that's supposed to happen happens. It uninstalls normally. It downloads normally, it installs normally, and then when it tries to start up, I get the " An internal application error has ocurred." notification window. With Real player, I click on the "Download" button and nothing happens. In the case of java, there is no "Download" button. (I presume because javascripts aren't working.)

Hi Macavity. Javascripts should not be a factor with downloading. It would only matter for pages written with Javascripts imbedded in them.

It sounds like IE itself might be damaged and might have to be reinstalled. I recommend posting a question in the XP forum and having them do some checking since we are not dealing with any malware at this point. They might even want to do a repair install of XP if that becomes necessary. It's hard to say at this point without doing some digging.

Cheers.
