I believe I have also acquired a 'Redirect virus'. Every program I try picks up threats and deletes them but the redirect continues. I have tried to follow the steps on this string of e-mails but I am not very computer savvy and I don't get the same log results. If there is someone who has the patience to walk me through this I would really appreciate it. Thank you.

My PC will not allow me to download aswNBR. When I click on 'Run' I get a window opening with this message. 'Data Execution Prevention - Microsoft Windows. 'To help protect your computer Windows has closed this program'. Is there something else I can do?

You can't download or run aswMBR?
In any case disable Norton and try again.

Did you disable Security Center for whatever reason?

Hi again. Turning off Norton Antivirus worked and I was able to download and run aswMBR. I have turned Norton on again. Is that okay? I did not disable Security Center. Here is the log. It shows one file as being infected. Shouldn't I delete it now?

Don't delete anything....

Download Malwarebytes Anti-Rootkit from HERE
  • Unzip downloaded file.
  • Open the folder where the contents were unzipped and run mbar.exe
  • Follow the instructions in the wizard to update and allow the program to scan your computer for threats.
  • DO NOT click on the Cleanup button. Simply exit the program.
  • When done, please post the two logs produced they will be in the MBAR folder..... mbar-log-xxxxx.txt and system-log.txt

This was the only log I could find. When I went to update Malwarebytes the download would start and the following would appear:

Current Database - v2012.12.03.14
New Database - v2012.12.20.04

Partially into the update the download would stop and I would get the error message:

Failed : MBAMFilel0::WriteFile

After several failed attempts to complete the update I just went ahead and did the scan. When it ended it said there was nothing to cleanup. Was it okay to go ahead and do the scan?

Which browser is affected by redirections?
What about other browser(s)?

Download Temp File Cleaner (TFC)
Alternate download: http://www.itxassociates.com/OT-Tools/TFC.exe
Double click on TFC.exe to run the program.
Click on Start button to begin cleaning process.
TFC will close all running programs, and it may ask you to restart computer.

=============================================================================

Please download AdwCleaner by Xplode onto your desktop.
  • Close all open programs and internet browsers.
  • Double click on adwcleaner.exe to run the tool.
  • Click on Delete.
  • Confirm each time with Ok.
  • Your computer will be rebooted automatically. A text file will open after the restart.
  • Please post the contents of that logfile with your next reply.
  • You can find the logfile at C:\AdwCleaner[S1].txt as well.

Next...

  • Double click on adwcleaner.exe to run the tool.
  • Click on Uninstall.
  • Confirm with yes.

=============================================================================

Please run a free online scan with the ESET Online Scanner

  • Disable your antivirus program
  • Tick the box next to YES, I accept the Terms of Use
  • Click Start
  • Accept any security warnings from your browser.
  • Check Scan archives
  • Click Start
  • ESET will then download updates for itself, install itself, and begin scanning your computer. Please be patient as this can take some time.
  • When the scan completes, click on List of found threats
  • Click on Export to text file , and save the file to your desktop using a unique name, such as ESETScan. Include the contents of this report in your next reply.
NOTE. If Eset doesn't find any threats it'll NOT produce any log.

We usually use Google and it has definitely got the redirect problem. I also tried Bing and it gets redirected. Tried Firefox and it seems to be okay. I don't know any other ones to try. As I said 'Not too smart when it comes to computers'.

I tried loading TFC using both shortcuts. The first doesn't work at all the second works as far as getting me to the download. At the download I press RUN but then I get an error message telling me it can't run from a temporary folder. So I saved it to another file then double-clicked TFC.exe. The TFC window opened and I pushed START. It went as far as 'closing all open applications' then froze. Mouse wouldn't work, Ctrl/Alt/Delete wouldn't open the Task Manager and the Esc key wouldn't work either. Had to shut down and reboot. I don't understand why I can't run this download.

Also, and I don't know if these are related. Other wierd stuff has taken over our PC that wasn't happening before. When we turn on the PC and after it loads Windows we get this error message.

Rundll
Error loading C:\Documents and Settings\HP Administrator\Application Data\mtodi.dll
The specified module could not be found.

Also when I try to go to 'Microsoft Word' from my Start menu it opens up 'Microsoft Office Binder'. I don't even know where this comes from and it won't let me open Word documents. I get the error message 'Office Binder cannot open or create this binder. Close other programs and check for disk space on the drive that contains your Temp Folder. This is not a Binder File.'

Excel seems to work fine.

Should I try to run TFC.exe agian? Or should I just move on to AdwCleaner?

Google and Bing are search engines not browsers.
I'd assume you're saying that Internet Explorer gets redirected but Firefox doesn't.
Is that correct?
If so...

Go here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/923737 and run "FixIt" procedure.
Make sure you follow ALL steps listed there.
See if that cures IE redirection.

Run TFC from safe mode.

Then run Eset.

When done we'll look at the error you're getting on startup.
Download Autoruns for Windows: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb963902.aspx
No installation required.
Simply unzip Autoruns.zip file, and double click on autoruns.exe file to run the program.
Go File>Save, and save it as AutoRuns.txt file to know location.
You must select Text from drop-down menu as a file type:

Upload the file(s) here: http://uploadmb.com/
Copy the link inside the Direct Link box and post it in your next reply.

Sorry but searching, browsing, it all means the same to me. We use Internet Explorer. And the redirect started to affect Firefox also. I did run the Microsoft 'FixIt' and it has upgraded IE to Version 8 but I am still getting the redirect. Not trying to look too pathetic but how do I get into Safe mod? By the way, thanks so much for taking this time with me.
