I have a 2 1/2 yo Acer Aspire X1700 PC with a Vista 64-bit OS which has been very good to me. I shut it down yesterday like usual. Today I boot it up, get to the desktop and nothing works. The cursor moves, but that's it! Left/right click on anything and nothing happens except the hourglass works forever and tumbles up and down when the 'sand' runs out.. The icon in the lower right corner tells me I'm not connected to the Internet. I have to push the button to shut the computer off. When I reboot, because I physically shut it down, the option screen appears asking me if I want to boot up in Safe Mode. When I do, the computer works normally and is connected to the internet. If I shut down and reboot in normal mode, I have the same problem. Can anyone help? Thank you for any enlightenment you might have.

Hi Dutchman99,

Since safe mode is working fine, see if a System Restore to an earlier time will correct this. Might be a shot in the dark, but it may help as well.

Other members may have some ideas as well, so please stay tuned if my suggestion doesn't work.

Donna :)

Hello Donna:

Thank you for your reply. System Restore was one of the things I tried but it would not work for me in SAFE Mode. However, I was able to get on the Internet in SAFE Mode and found a "FixIt" program on a Microsoft Windows Site. I figured "Why Not? Things can't get any worse". After I ran the program I received a message that it had repaired one of the Registry's and when I Rebooted in NORMAL Mode.....it worked!

Now that's good news!
