Hi guys, I've got a Sabertooth X58 mobo, i7 970 3.2 hex core overclocked to 3.6, 12 GB ram, SSD, GeForce 670 GPU (recently swapped to see if that was the issue) running Win 7, just to give you an idea...

The thing has run flawlessly for almost 2 years until about 3 months ago. 2 of 3 times I boot, all goes well. But otherwise 1 of 2 issues happens:

1) I'll get the mobo splash screen and it hangs right there. I have to hard shutdown to do anything.

or...

2) It will get all the way to Windows, but right before it's fully ready to go (all icons, etc will be there), it will hang and lock up with a little hourglass appearing when I move over the task bar at the bottom. Cntrl-Alt-Delete doesn't work, and again I have to hard shutdown.

Like I said, 2 out of 3 times all starts normally and I get absolutely no other issues once it's up and running. I can hardcore game for 12 hours without any hiccups, no BSODs, no lockups-- it really runs flawlessly, once it's up and running.

I've done a lot of testing to try and figure out what's going on, and I'm convinced it's a hardware issue. All drivers are updated. I've done mem-test, scandisk, I've swapped GPUs and done stability testing-- no issues noted. I have my CPU liquid cooled with various temp monitors, and it never gets too hot. Just in case, I stopped overclocking to see if that was the cause, and it still happened. I've also got an 850 watt Corsair PSU, which is more than enough for a single GPU, so that's not the issue. There are no error logs as nothing records other than the hard shutdown I have to perform when Win doesn't fully load.

I'm of the conclusion that it's either my mobo or my SSD-- one of which isn't doing what it's supposed to during the boot process. I've updated to the latest Bios (and confirmed it was updated), and that hasn't helped. I've tried swapping boot order in the bios, and that hasn't helped either. But if there was something wrong with either of these two pieces of hardware wouldn't I have issues once it's fully booted? How can a computer run flawlessly with a bad mobo or SSD?

It really is a mystery. Any ideas?

I deleted faults related to a game (Fallen Enchantress) which is unrelated to my issues here, and I also deleted issues with my UPS battery backup, which I've already resolved. I've also deleted administrator login info.

If your problems go back 3 months...you have not posted any data that relates to that period.

Without such info, I'd just be whistling in the dark, but others here may have some ideas.

Try looking for some SSD forums on certain attributes and readings. From your Speccy SMART report :

Hmmm.. Way above my head, but it sounds like you're suggesting my SSD may be bad, or may be going bad. I had always thought that the deviced figures out where the bad parts are and avoids them automatically.

Of course this is the first computer I've had in a decade that doesn't have Raid 1, so naturally the hard drive is going bad...

FWIW, I've done multiple tests with various HD-testing/monitoring software, and nothing suggests my SSD is going bad. Not sure how accurate these tests are, but I've also read that there is a natural degradation (more or less) with SSDs and the blocks they can read/write on (cycles). Mine is at 97%. Even for a 2-year old SSD, the software says everything is fine.

Any more ideas?

OK. Memtest is not foolproof. If all 6 slots are full, pull 3 out, retest. If you are running 3 sticks, pull 2, retest. Make sure memory is at default, not an XMP profile. Disable CPU power saving states. Full voltage, all the time.

If you have a multimeter, find a spare molex and monitor 12v+.

That's a start.

At this point I'd love for it to be RAM... Easy, cheap fix provided I even bother. Anyway, thanks for the advice.
