Hi,

This Asus N61J laptop running Win7 Home Premium 64 bit recently (the last 2 weeks or so) started having problems starting up. Sometimes the computer will start and other times it won't. A screen will come up saying windows did not shut down properly. Selecting "Start Windows Normally" will take it to the System Repair. System Repair will run and report it is unable to repair the computer. Rebooting will allow the computer to start. In Event Viewer I see logs from the attempted repair saying "C:\Windows\System32\kdcomm.dll" is corrupt.

The computer is running Norton Internet Security 2012 with up to date definitions and only cookies found with regular scans.

What I've tried:

I ran sfc /scannow from the command prompt (not in safe mode or from recovery disk; just from within Windows) and it found no trouble.
I googled the name of the offending file and found several references to rootkits. I read a few of the forum posts here and saw that a rootkit was a possible source of trouble. I downloaded and ran TDSSKiller, selecting the TDLFS file system. The results screen reported 2 problems: Rootkit.Boot.Pihar.c with a recommended solution to Cure and TDSS File system with the recommendation to skip.

I stopped at that point as I'm getting in over my head and need help moving forward. I did not select continue on that screen and the screen is still up as I post this.

I created a new account here and have followed the instructions to make a first post. I've downloaded and run DDS and have copied/pasted the DDS.txt file contents below. I've also attached the Attach.txt file.

Thanks for your help.

Thank you CatByte for such a speedy reply. I've followed your instructions and include the log results below.

I still had the TDSSKiller screen up and x'd out of it to end it running. However, it said it cleaned up one threat and that I needed to reboot. Right after that Norton popped up that it had neutralized several threats. I've attached a screen shot of how those two screens appeared.

I thought best to do that reboot prior to your instructions. So I rebooted, downloaded the files you suggested, and ran scan tool and the listparts tool. Here are the results:

did TDSSKiller produce a log after it rebooted?

Please run the following:

Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Rootkit and save it to your desktop.
  • Be sure to print out and follow the instructions provided on that same page for performing a scan.
  • Caution: This is a beta version so also read the disclaimer and back up all your data before using.
  • When the scan completes, click on the Cleanup button to remove any threats found and reboot the computer if prompted to do so.
  • Perform another scan with Malwarebytes Anti-Rootkit to verify that no threats remain. If they do, then click Cleanup once more and repeat the process.
  • If there are problems with Internet access, Windows Update, Windows Firewall or other system issues, run the fixdamage tool located in the folder Malwarebytes Anti-Rootkit was run from and reboot your computer.
  • Two files (mbar-log-YYYY-MM-DD, system-log.txt) will be created and saved within that same folder.
  • Copy and paste the contents of these two log files in your next reply.
Note: Further documentation can be found in the ReadMe.rtf file which is located in the Malwarebytes Anti-Rootkit folder.

Yes, TDSSKiller did produce a log file. Two in fact. I've attached those in the attachments.

I ran mbar and it found 4 trojans. I rebooted, ran it again and it was clean the second time. Internet access seems fine, I don't use Windows firewall but Norton seems fine. I ran Windows update and it also seems fine. It downloaded and installed 9 updates and rebooted just fine. To this point I have not run the fixdamage tool.

Here are the logs files from mbar in date/time order:

Please run the following

Refer to the ComboFix User's Guide

  • Download ComboFix from the following location:

    Link

    * IMPORTANT !!! Place ComboFix.exe on your Desktop
  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with ComboFix.
You can get help on disabling your protection programs here
  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • Your desktop may go blank. This is normal. It will return when ComboFix is done. ComboFix may reboot your machine. This is normal.
  • When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log in your next reply

    Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall.

    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
  • Ensure your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications are re-enabled.

    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

NOTE: If you encounter a message "illegal operation attempted on registry key that has been marked for deletion" and no programs will run - please just reboot and that will resolve that error.

Approximately how long should it take to run ComboFix. It's been running for about an hour and seems to be stuck on preparing the log report.

The screen reads:

Preparing Log Report.
Do not run any programs until ComboFix has finished.

There is just a blinking cursor beneath that. Shortly after this screen appeared the computer went to sleep and all disc activity stopped. After 1/2 hour I brought it back out of sleep by pressing the space bar and then entering my password. I don't want to go change anything with the screen saver but unless I move the mouse periodically it will keep going to sleep. When the computer is awake there is some disc activity; the hard disk light blinks about once or twice per second but no sustained activity.

Your advice?

Thanks for your help. It is much appreciated.

Darryl

close the program and reboot, then look for a log at C:\ComboFix.txt

Thanks.
There was no file in C:\ folder but there was one in C:\ComboFix\ComboFix.dat with a timestamp about the time the computer went to sleep.

Here it is:

Please do the following:

  • Very Important! Temporarily disable your anti-virus, script blocking and any anti-malware real-time protection before following the steps below.
  • They can interfere with ComboFix or remove some of its embedded files which may cause "unpredictable results".
Copy/paste the text inside the Codebox below into notepad:

Here's how to do that:
Press the WinKey + R to open a run box, type Notepad > click OK.
This will open an empty notepad file:

Copy all the text inside of the code box - Press Ctrl+C (or right click on the highlighted section and choose 'copy')

Completed all tasks and have included the ComboFix log below, however ...

I disabled NIS for 1 hour, assuming that would be enought time for ComboFix to run. Bad assumption. ComboFix ran quite slowly and after one hour was at about stage 16 when Norton reactivated. I quickly disabled it again and ComboFix kept on running to conclusion and appeared non the worse for it.

Jave and Adobe Reader are updated. Adobe Reader download kept timing out (I've had this before on 2 other computers so this isn't new) so did Adobe's direct download and finished that installation.

The computer seems to be operating fine and through all these scans and reboots it has rebooted cleanly everytime.

The ComboFix log:

We just have some housekeeping to do now,

Below I have included a number of recommendations for how to protect your computer against malware infections.

  • It is good security practice to change your passwords to all your online accounts on a fairly regular basis, this is especially true after an infection. Refer to this Microsoft article
Strong passwords: How to create and use them
Then consider a password keeper, to keep all your passwords safe. KeePass is a small utility that allows you to manage all your passwords.

  • Keep Windows updated by regularly checking their website at :
    http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/
This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer.

  • Make Internet Explorer more secure
    • Click Start > Run
    • Type Inetcpl.cpl & click OK
    • Click on the Security tab
    • Click Reset all zones to default level
    • Make sure the Internet Zone is selected & Click Custom level
    • In the ActiveX section, set the first two options ("Download signed and unsigned ActiveX controls) to "Prompt", and ("Initialize and Script ActiveX controls not marked as safe") to "Disable".
    • Next Click OK, then Apply button and then OK to exit the Internet Properties page.

  • Download TFC to your desktop
    • Close any open windows.
    • Double click the TFC icon to run the program
    • TFC will close all open programs itself in order to run,
    • Click the Start button to begin the process.
    • Allow TFC to run uninterrupted.
    • The program should not take long to finish it's job
    • Once its finished it should automatically reboot your machine,
    • if it doesn't, manually reboot to ensure a complete clean
It's normal after running TFC cleaner that the PC will be slower to boot the first time.

  • WOT, Web of Trust, warns you about risky websites that try to scam visitors, deliver malware or send spam. Protect your computer against online threats by using WOT as your front-line layer of protection when browsing or searching in unfamiliar territory. WOT's color-coded icons show you ratings for 21 million websites, helping you avoid the dangerous sites:
    • Green to go
    • Yellow for caution
    • Red to stop
WOT has an addon available for both Firefox and IE

  • Keep a backup of your important files - Now, more than ever, it's especially important to protect your digital files and memories. This article is full of good information on alternatives for home backup solutions.

  • ERUNT (Emergency Recovery Utility NT) allows you to keep a complete backup of your registry and restore it when needed. The standard registry backup options that come with Windows back up most of the registry but not all of it. ERUNT however creates a complete backup set, including the Security hive and user related sections. ERUNT is easy to use and since it creates a full backup, there are no options or choices other than to select the location of the backup files. The backup set includes a small executable that will launch the registry restore if needed.

  • In light of your recent issue, I'm sure you'd like to avoid any future infections. Please take a look at these well written articles:
PC Safety and Security--What Do I Need?.
  • Simple and easy ways to keep your computer safe and secure on the Internet

Thank you for your patience, and performing all of the procedures requested.

Please respond one last time so we can consider the thread resolved and close it, thank-you.

Okay, all those steps are done. Everything seems to be working fine. I guess it's time to just use it for a while and see how it goes.

Thanks for all your help and also for the speed of that help. Truly impressive and much appreciated.

Darryl
