I am having what appears to be two major issues with my Windows XP 32-bit machine which seem to be related in some way. After having the computer booted in normal mode for several minutes or longer, often times some programs will not load. I check in Task Manager and it shows that the program is running but no GUI comes up for the program. This has happened with Internet Explorer, Raidcall, Skype, Windows Volume Control, and possibly other programs I can't think of at the moment. When I was having the issue with opening IE, I was still able to work in Firefox and Chrome. However, I tried using Windows Live Outlook Webmail (live.com e-mail) to send an e-mail message and the new window popped up but would not display anything in it (it had the loading icon continuously but did not load). I tried it both through Chrome and Firefox.

Also, often times my windows wave volume bar is getting set to the lowest setting. It seems to occur when going into a game or opening another program. I have to go into the volume control and bring it back up to hear any sound. It happens very frequently and I'm unsure what may be causing the issue. The two issues seem to be related because they began occurring at about the same time.
I've tried running a MalwareBytes scan which only seemed to find some type of adware file that it removed. I have AVG Free installed as my antivirus program.

I have been having issues every time I log into normal mode lately. I've tried a few instances of logging into "Safe Mode with Networking" to see if any issues occur. I did not notice notice any issues the first time I used it for over an hour. The second time I tried using it for over an hour as well but I ran into an issue where explorer.exe stopped responding. I was unable to use the start menu. I tried opening task manager which took about 30 seconds to open up (usually within 1 second). One of the "svchost.exe" processes was using 50% of CPU. I ended this process and the machine started running ok again.

I'm wondering if it's possible that some type of Windows files are corrupted and not allowing the machine to function properly anymore. Or could it potentially be that my hardware is not performing properly? I have used canned air to clean out dust inside of the tower.

Most times now the machine doesn't allow me to shut down or restart the normal way. It seems to allow to continue using some programs that have already been running but it won't allow me to open task manager or any other programs. It'll usually let me click the start menu and shut down, then it seems to close programs running (everything gets removed from the screen except the background image). However, the machine just stays at that screen and never shuts down; until done manually.

I don't see anything malicious but FSS reports number of services problems.

Let's run couple more scans first and then we'll get back to FSS issues.

Download Temp File Cleaner (TFC)
Alternate download: http://www.itxassociates.com/OT-Tools/TFC.exe
Double click on TFC.exe to run the program.
Click on Start button to begin cleaning process.
TFC will close all running programs, and it may ask you to restart computer.

=============================================================================

Please download AdwCleaner by Xplode onto your desktop.
  • Close all open programs and internet browsers.
  • Double click on adwcleaner.exe to run the tool.
  • Click on Delete.
  • Confirm each time with Ok.
  • Your computer will be rebooted automatically. A text file will open after the restart.
  • Please post the contents of that logfile with your next reply.
  • You can find the logfile at C:\AdwCleaner[S1].txt as well.

Next...

  • Double click on adwcleaner.exe to run the tool.
  • Click on Uninstall.
  • Confirm with yes.

=============================================================================

Please run a free online scan with the ESET Online Scanner

  • Disable your antivirus program
  • Tick the box next to YES, I accept the Terms of Use
  • Click Start
  • Accept any security warnings from your browser.
  • Check Scan archives
  • Click Start
  • ESET will then download updates for itself, install itself, and begin scanning your computer. Please be patient as this can take some time.
  • When the scan completes, click on List of found threats
  • Click on Export to text file , and save the file to your desktop using a unique name, such as ESETScan. Include the contents of this report in your next reply.
NOTE. If Eset doesn't find any threats it'll NOT produce any log.

The volume icon is no longer loading anymore as of sometime around 9:30pm today. At this point I'm thinking I'm having hardware issues. The Sounds and Audio Devices properties in Control Panel is claiming there is "No Audio Device". I do not have a separate sound card, it is built in. The mobo, hard drive, and processor are going on 5 years old. Do you think it may still be worth going through all of these scans and whatnot?

I've installed a new hard drive into the same machine and that one does not have an issue with sound nor have I noticed any issues with programs. I installed Windows 7 on the new hard drive.

The older hard drive is still having issues.

The ESET scan showed as getting 99% of the way through but it would not scan anymore when it got to a certain point. I was able to view the "infected files" but it did not allow me to save the log. The computer froze and would not allow me to do anything else. The scan took about 2 and a half hours to get to that point. It only seemed to find some Adware files. I feel that if I try it again, it will not likely go fully through.

Download Windows Repair (all in one) from this site

Install the program then run it.

Go to Step 2 and allow it to run CheckDisk by clicking on Do It button:

Once that is done then go to Step 3 and allow it to run System File Check by clicking on Do It button:

So I will not be able to complete Step 3 if I cannot find my XP disc?

Exactly. If step 3 is asking you for Windows CD it means there is something wrong with some system files and this has to be fixed.
Ask around. Borrowed disk will do.
