Sounds good.

I should be able to reply tonight once I'm settled back in my apartment. I went home for a few days for Christmas.

Cody,

Sorry it took me so long to respond, but I believe my issue has been resolved. Friday night I attempted your last set of instructions. I tried to find the files you requested but was not successful. Then I unplugged what you told me and the FBI screen did not pop up. I was able to open by Malware Bytes then when I plugged the internet back in was able to download the most current version and then run a full scan of my computer. It found and removed 8 possible viruses. Now my computer is working fine. I am so happy. I thank you so much for your help. You have been outstanding to work with. Now I have one question for you. To keep this from happening in the future what kind of protection do you recommend for my computer. Currently I just have the free version of Malware Bytes which apparently is not enough. I am willing to pay for something but don't want to break the bank. What protection could I buy that gives me the most bang for my buck? Thanks again for all the help. Hope you have a great New Year!

Matt

Hello Chiefsbro,

Glad to hear the computer is working now. :thumbup2:

As for your question about a good antivirus program, I always suggest Microsoft Security Essentials - Malwarebytes Antimalware is not an antivirus program, rather a program that removes malware from your computer. I will address all of this properly as soon as we have completed the cleanup process.

While the screenlocker is disabled and Malwarebytes Antimalware did remove some malicious files, this does not mean that your computer is completely clean.

Please follow the directions below to continue the removal process:

Please download DDS by sUBs from one of the following links. Save it to your desktop.
DDS.com
DDS.pif
  • Double click on the DDS icon, allow it to run.
  • Mark the option attach.txt.
  • Click on Start.
  • After the scan has finished, confirm the message with Ok.
  • DDS will automatically open both logfiles.
  • You can find them on your desktop as well.
  • Please post the content of those logfiles with your next answer.
Please note: You may have to disable any script protection running if the scan fails to run. After downloading the tool, disconnect from the internet and disable all antivirus protection. Run the scan, enable your A/V and reconnect to the internet.

Information on A/V control HERE

Ok. I think these are what you want. I have downloaded Microsoft Security Essentials to the "sick computer". Please let me know if this is what you were looking for. Thanks.

Hello Chiefsbro,

Yes, this is what I was looking for.

But please copy and paste the DDS.txt into your next reply, then attach the attach.txt to that post like you've done already.

Hello Chiefsbro,

One or more of the identified infections is a backdoor trojan.

This allows hackers to remotely control your computer, steal critical system information and download and execute files.

I would counsel you to disconnect this PC from the Internet immediately. If you do any banking or other financial transactions on the PC or if it should contain any other sensitive information, please get to a known clean computer and change all passwords where applicable, and it would be wise to contact those same financial institutions to apprise them of your situation.

Though the trojan has been identified and can be killed, because of it's backdoor functionality, your PC is very likely compromised and there is no way to be sure your computer can ever again be trusted. Many experts in the security community believe that once infected with this type of trojan, the best course of action would be a reformat and reinstall of the OS. Please read these for more information:

How Do I Handle Possible Identify Theft, Internet Fraud and CC Fraud?
When Should I Format, How Should I Reinstall

We can still clean this machine but I can't guarantee that it will be 100% secure afterwards. Let me know what you decide to do.

If you choose to continue with the cleanup process, please follow the directions found below. Otherwise, let me know what you want to do.

-------------------------------------------

We need to run a scan with Combofix:

  • Please go to the download page for ComboFix by sUBs.
  • Click the Download Now button pictured below and save the file to your desktop:

    Posted Image
  • Disable any anti-virus and/or firewall software you have installed.
instructions can be found here if needed
  • Close all open windows including your web browser
as mentioned in the first post, you may want to print out all instructions before starting
  • Double-click on the ComboFix icon on your desktop. Posted Image
  • Read the Disclaimer and click I Agree if you want to run the software, then you should see a window like the one below:

    Posted Image
  • DO NOT use your computer while ComboFix is running. There are a lot of things going on behind the scenes and a single mouse click can cause the program to stall.

However, if you see the prompt below, please click Yes to download the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

    Posted Image

If an Internet connection is not available or you choose not to install the recovery console, ComboFix will run in Reduced Functionality mode
  • Allow ComboFix to reboot the computer if necessary, it will run again after you log back in.
  • When complete, a log file will be displayed, please copy and paste the contents of this file into your next post.

    Posted Image

More information about downloading and using ComboFix can be found here if needed.

Wow! I had no idea it could be that bad. The good news is we do not perform any banking or financial transactions on that computer. I would say we would choose to continue with the clean up process and continue to sparingly use that computer for minor information storage like music etc. and internet usage. We will plan to continue not using that computer to bank or buy things online. I will try to get to your next steps by sometime this Friday. I will send you the report when I get done. Thanks.

How long does it typically take to run? I downloaded it and ran it about 40-45 minutes ago. To look at the monitor it does not look like anything is happening.

Ok. I think I found the issue it was not running. I did not save it to my desktop and run from there. Now it is acting like it wants to do something but keeps telling me Antivirus: AV Security Essentials Scanner is still active. I turned everything off as directed. I have now even uninstalled Security Essential from the computer and am still getting the same message. I even restarted the computer. Please let me know what to try next. Thanks.

Hello Chiefsbro,

Please just use the forums to communicate with me, I will actually get to it faster that way than if you comment on my profile page. If I don't get back to you within 48 hours of your post, you can send me a private message, then I will receive an email notifying me of your message.

As I've said in my signature, I'm a full time student and I also work 25+ hours a week. Despite that, I do try to respond within 24 hours. :)

---------------------------------

1. Close any open browsers.

2. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

3. Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the quotebox below into it:

File::
c:\windows\system32\drivers\japphrtz.sys
c:\windows\system32\drivers\qbfpvkbu.sys
c:\windows\system32\drivers\qyxxbqqi.sys

Driver::
japphrtz
qbfpvkbu
qyxxbqqi

Save this as CFScript.txt, in the same location as ComboFix.exe

Posted Image

Refering to the picture above, drag CFScript into ComboFix.exe

When finished, it shall produce a log for you at C:\ComboFix.txt which I will require in your next reply.

CCNA R&SCCNA Security | Network+  |  B.S. - Information Technology | Security Engineer

If I am helping you and have not replied within 48 hours, please send me a private message.

Hello Chiefsbro,

Are you currently experiencing any problems?

-------------------------------

I'd like us to scan your machine with ESET OnlineScan
  • Hold down Control and click on this link to open ESET OnlineScan in a new window.
  • Click the Posted Image button.
  • For alternate browsers only: (Microsoft Internet Explorer users can skip these steps)
    • Click on esetsmartinstaller_enu.exe to download the ESET Smart Installer. Save it to your desktop.
    • Double click on the Posted Image
      icon on your desktop.
  • Check "YES, I accept the Terms of Use."
  • Click the Start button.
  • Accept any security warnings from your browser.
  • Under scan settings, check "Scan Archives" and "Remove found threats"
  • Click Advanced settings and select the following:
    • Scan potentially unwanted applications
    • Scan for potentially unsafe applications
    • Enable Anti-Stealth technology
  • ESET will then download updates for itself, install itself, and begin scanning your computer. Please be patient as this can take some time.
  • When the scan completes, click List Threats
  • Click Export, and save the file to your desktop using a unique name, such as ESETScan. Include the contents of this report in your next reply.
  • Click the Back button.
  • Click the Finish button.
