My wife has a mini laptop which has started to boot up and run very slow. I suspect there may be too many programmes/processes running in the background. Can anyone recommend a good programme that will let me clean up all the unnecessary programmes running on the laptop and then decide which one I want to run at startup?

Worth a look, Slow Computer-browser Check Here First; It May Not Be Malware - http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic87058.html .

How much free space currently on the Windows partition...and how large is that partition?

There is 150gb free out of 220 on the windows partition. I have a feeling that the problem is too many programmes running at startup and in the background. I have tried a few of the suggestions in the thread such as a defrag, system cleanup and disabling indexing. None of these have helped. It is an Acer Aspire One running windows 7 starter with a 1.6GHz Intel Atom Processor and1gb of ram.

Let's clarify something.

Startup programs...don't have anything to do with a system, unless it's reflected in boot time. Having a zillion startup items...will slow the boot process as they take time to load...but it has no effect on overall system performance.

Unless, of course, you have malware on the system among your startups.

And...1GB of RAM...isn't sufficient to do more than barely run any version of Win 7, IMO.

Please download MiniToolBox , save it to your desktop and run it.

Checkmark the following checkboxes:
List last 10 Event Viewer log
List Installed Programs
List Users, Partitions and Memory size.

Click Go and paste the content into your next post.

Also...please Publish a Snapshot using Speccy - http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic323892.html/page__p__1797792#entry1797792 .

Apologies, my initial post wasn't very clear.

The problem is that the laptop is taking a very long time to boot up and once started is running very slow.

I don't suspect any malware just too much stuff running both during the boot and afterwards. I want to stop all non-essential startup programmes and reduce the number of processes running once it has booted up.

I know getting extra Ram will help but will it just mask a bigger problem?

You have a netbook CPU and 1GB of RAM.

Netbooks, IMO, are intended to do little more than provide Internet connectivity and run a few necessary programs for the convenience of the user.

For your errors concerning services...see http://support.microsoft.com/kb/241584 .

Re your Bonjour errors, http://www.eventid.net/display.asp?eventid=100&eventno=10659&source=Bonjour%20Service&phase=1 . I would uninstall iTunes and see how things run for awhile. It the system improves, I'd reinstall the latest version of iTunes.

All I am really looking for is two things I) a way of reducing the number of programmes that run during startup to make it quicker and ii) a way of reducing the number of programmes/processes running while the laptop is started.

Are there any instructions you can give me to do this or programmes you can recommend?

kerryboy,

First off, let me say that I agree with hamluis's assessment and he has provided good suggestions for you to deal with reported system and application errors. A 1.6 GB Atom processor with 1 GB of RAM running Windows 7 Starter Edition will never be fast. That being said, as an owner of a similar netbook, I can understand your desire.

All I am really looking for is two things I) a way of reducing the number of programmes that run during startup to make it quicker and ii) a way of reducing the number of programmes/processes running while the laptop is started.

Slim Computer is a small freeware program that will scan your computer for startup programs, unneccessary software and browser add-ons. It rates each item found based on a cloud based community of computer users preferences. Essentially what thousands of users prefer. Items can be removed from startup and easily restored latter if desired.

Avast anti-virus is a fine program. I run it on a few of my own computers; Microsoft Security Essential (MSE) on the rest. Avast is definitely more resource intensive than is MSE during normal computing. It also adds many more seconds to the boot time. You might want to try replacing Avast with MSE as a test.

Good luck.

Regards,
Brooks
