I have Total Defense Security Center, V. 8, installed on my Dell Dimension 9200 running Windows XP, SP2. Starting yesterday, TD's auto-scan has repeatedly detected and quarantined the JS/Redir.D trojan, which I then delete from the "View Quarantined Files" page. Despite going through the detection/quarantine/deletion process several times, this trojan keeps reappearing in the auto-scans. I have run numerous full-system scans, both in regular mode and safe mode, utilizing TD, Malwarebytes and Exterminate It. And yes, I know that having more than one program on my system can cause conflicts, but I've had luck with Malwarebytes in the past when TD failed to find/delete a malicious file, and only TD runs continuously in the background. I also turned off system restore before running the scans in safe mode in an effort to find the trojan in the restore files. I have since turned system restore back on. The only files each security program has found/tagged are adware cookies and a coupon bar. Even though TD identifies this trojan in the auto-scan, it doesn't find it during a full system scan. I should note that the location identified by TD for the trojan is as follows: C:\Documents and Settings\MYNAME\Local Settings\Application Data\ANTIPHISHING-VMNINTERNETHELPER1_1DN\DATA\121206161352-M.LIST. I browsed that location just to see if the file was there (no intention of deleting it, since I know it takes more than that to remove a virus), and it was not there; the file list goes up to "L.LIST" before a new identifying number begins. I contacted TD technical support through a live chat online and was directed to call their Tech Support number so that a tech could perform remote diagnostics on my computer. I did so, but the tech was more interested in selling me his company's services than solving my problem. He ran a useless scan which detected only the same low-level threats (cookies and coupon bar) that my own scans had already detected. Short of wiping my hard drive and reinstalling Windows XP, I don't know how to find and get rid of this trojan. Although the computer has not been giving me any problems or redirecting me to any suspicious websites when I'm on the internet, I'm aware that it's been compromised and can't use it until it's cleaned. I just don't know how to do that and would greatly appreciate any help you can provide.

I didn't want to get back on the computer until I heard back from you. I logged back online a few minutes ago, and I've been bouncing from one web site to another to see if I could trigger an alert from Total Defense. So far, so good. No alerts. Do I need to get rid of that last item that ESET Scan found? When I set up the scan, I didn't check "Remove", but I could always run it again with that checked.

Good news :)

Since you changed Eset settings remove that item manually.

=======================

Update Adobe Reader

You can download it from http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html
After installing the latest Adobe Reader, uninstall all previous versions (if present).
Note. If you already have Adobe Photoshop® Album Starter Edition installed or do not wish to have it installed UNcheck the box which says Also Download Adobe Photoshop® Album Starter Edition.

Alternatively, you can uninstall Adobe Reader (33.5 MB), download and install Foxit PDF Reader(3.5MB) from HERE.
It's a much smaller file to download and uses a lot less resources than Adobe Reader.
Note: When installing FoxitReader, make sure to UN-check any pre-checked toolbar, or any other garbage.

======================

1. Update your Java version here: http://www.java.com/en/download/installed.jsp

Note 1: UNCHECK any pre-checked toolbar and/or software offered with the Java update. The pre-checked toolbars/software are not part of the Java update.

Note 2: The Java Quick Starter (JQS.exe) adds a service to improve the initial startup time of Java applets and applications. If you don't want to run another extra service, go to Start > Control Panel > Java > Advanced > Miscellaneous and uncheck the box for Java Quick Starter. Click OK and restart your computer.

2. Now, we need to remove old Java version and its remnants...

Download JavaRa to your desktop and unzip it.
  • Run JavaRa.exe (Vista and 7 users! Right click on JavaRa.exe, click Run As Administrator), pick the language of your choice and click Select. Then click Remove Older Versions.
  • Accept any prompts.
  • Do NOT post JavaRa log.

Your computer is clean Posted Image

1. We need to reset system restore to prevent your computer from being accidentally reinfected by using some old restore point(s). We'll remove all old restore points and create fresh, clean restore point.

Turn system restore off.
Restart computer.
Turn system restore back on.

If you don't know how to do it...
Windows XP: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310405
Vista and Windows 7: http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windows-vista/disable-system-restore-in-windows-vista/

2. Make sure, Windows Updates are current (Service Pack 3!!!)

3. If any Trojan was listed among your infection(s), make sure, you change all of your on-line important passwords (bank account(s), secured web sites, etc.) immediately!

4. Check if your browser plugins are up to date.
Firefox - https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/plugincheck/
other browsers: https://browsercheck.qualys.com/ (click on "Launch a quick scan now" link)

5. Download, and install WOT (Web OF Trust): http://www.mywot.com/. It'll warn you (in most cases) about dangerous web sites.

6. Run Malwarebytes "Quick scan" once in a while to assure safety of your computer.

7. Run Temporary File Cleaner (TFC) weekly.

8. Download and install Secunia Personal Software Inspector (PSI): http://secunia.com/vulnerability_scanning/personal/. The Secunia PSI is a FREE security tool designed to detect vulnerable and out-dated programs and plug-ins which expose your PC to attacks. Run it weekly.

9. (optional) If you want to keep all your programs up to date, download and install FileHippo Update Checker.
The Update Checker will scan your computer for installed software, check the versions and then send this information to FileHippo.com to see if there are any newer releases.

10. When installing\updating ANY program, make sure you always select "Custom " installation, so you can UN-check any possible "drive-by-install" (foistware), like toolbars etc., which may try to install along with the legitimate program. Do NOT click "Next" button without looking at any given page.

11. Read:
How did I get infected?, With steps so it does not happen again!: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic2520.html
Simple and easy ways to keep your computer safe and secure on the Internet: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/keep-your-computer-safe-online/

12. Except for MBAM and TFC, which are keepers you can simply delete all other tools we used as they don't install.
