Hello all!

My partner has run into a bit of a problem on her XP SP3 Computer.

Apparently avast popped up with a warning that she'd been infected and the file had been moved to chest and did she want to delete it, she deleted it and as of last night cant connect to the internet, avast web/mail shields have stopped functioning and the firewall has been disabled (and attempts to restart it have failed).

So far have tried:

Virus and Malware scans (Avast virus scan (returned 1 result in system restore file, chested and deleted), Malwarebytes (1 file, apparently fixed) and Spybot S&D (91 results, all macromedia files level 5 risk)
Restoring system restore point: "Cannot restore no changes have been made"
Restarting winsock, does nothing
A couple of reg fixes (detailed here http://support.microsoft.com/kb/920074)
Replacing AFD.sys and AED.Sys in the Dllcache with one from another XP laptop (wasn't there previously) and in the driver file in system 32 (no change but have originals just in case)
Running: TDSSkiller.exe, winsockfix.exe, tweaking.com_windows_repair_aio_setup.exe

Reaching my wit's end a little here and wondering what I can do? Don't have an XP recovery/install disk so can't do a quick fix of this, was wondering if anyone out there can help me, would be much appreciated :)

Thanks in advance.

Your in exactly the same point I was in yesterday. you have probably got a rootkit or nasty malware like I had. Whatever you do do not delete any of your system files or let your antivirus do so, I made this mistake and got my internet drivers deleted. Luckily I had a system restore to fix it.

Try booting into Safe-Mode by pressing F8 repeateadly at start up and then using the up arrow to select the 'Safe Mode' Option then hit enter.

Once you have done this try your system restore point again by going to Start>Help & Support>Undo changes to computer with System Restore (Under Pick a task)>Restore My Computer to an earlier time. select a date maybe about 1 week to 2 weeks back and then follow through with the rest. Your PC will turn off and a box saying restoring files will come up. Just after that your PC will reboot. Login in the default windows login and the System Restore box will open up first on your desktop. Just Close that and hopefully your antivirus and firewall will have turned back on.

Finally come back here and get Trusted member to help you out to help you check your computer for remaining problems/viruses.

Do not uninstall anything after you have used System Restore. Wait for a Advisor to help you. Also do not replace any files from files from another laptop, a advisor will help you find backups on your system and replace (if infected) the backups with the ones needed with a fix.bat which they customly make.

Thanks for the reply robocop,

We tried the system restore route yesterday and only one restore point worked (from earlier this week) with all the others returning errors, which I thought would solve the problem, unfortunately no: antivirus web/mail shields still disabled, firewall off and no internet access.

In terms of rootkits/viruses we've run an avast scan which picked up something in the system restore folder which may have just been remnants of the original "virus" (which I'm suspecting may have been a false positive) but otherwise clean, tdsskiller (anti-rootkit) turned up nothing and malwarebytes is reporting clean (as is Spybot).

Download Security Check from HERE, and save it to your Desktop.

* Double-click SecurityCheck.exe
* Follow the onscreen instructions inside of the black box.
* A Notepad document should open automatically called checkup.txt; please post the contents of that document.

=============================================================================

Please download Farbar Service Scanner (FSS) and run it on the computer with the issue.
Make sure the following options are checked:
Internet Services
Windows Firewall
System Restore
Security Center/Action Center
Windows Update
Windows Defender

Press "Scan".
It will create a log (FSS.txt) in the same directory the tool is run.
Please copy and paste the log to your reply.

====================================================================================

Please download MiniToolBox and run it.

Checkmark following boxes:
Report IE Proxy Settings
Report FF Proxy Settings
List content of Hosts
List IP configuration
List Winsock Entries
List last 10 Event Viewer log
List Installed Programs
List Devices (do NOT change any settings here)
List Users, Partitions and Memory size

Click Go and post the result.

=============================================================================

Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware (aka MBAM): https://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/malwarebytes-anti-malware/ to your desktop.

* Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
* At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
* If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
* Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
* When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
* Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
* When completed, a log will open in Notepad.
* Post the log back here.

Be sure to restart the computer.

The log can also be found here:
C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\log-date.txt
Or at C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\log-date.txt

=============================================================================

Download aswMBR to your desktop.
Double click the aswMBR.exe to run it.
If you see this question: Would you like to download latest Avast! virus definitions?" say "Yes".
Click the "Scan" button to start scan.
On completion of the scan click "Save log", save it to your desktop and post in your next reply.

NOTE. aswMBR will create MBR.dat file on your desktop. This is a copy of your MBR. Do NOT delete it.

Download Malwarebytes Anti-Rootkit from HERE
Unzip downloaded file.
Open the folder where the contents were unzipped and run mbar.exe
Follow the instructions in the wizard to update and allow the program to scan your computer for threats.

Ok that looks clean to me.
BUT You have one system file missing

Please download SystemLook from one of the links below and save it to your Desktop.
Download Mirror #1
Download Mirror #2
64-bit users go HERE
Double-click SystemLook.exe to run it.
Vista users:: Right click on SystemLook.exe, click Run As Administrator
Copy the content of the following and paste it into the main textfield:

:filefind
tcpip.sys

Click the Look button to start the scan.
When finished, a notepad window will open with the results of the scan. Please post this log in your next reply.
Note: The log can also be found on your Desktop entitled SystemLook.txt

OK its very strange that you did not have any spares of this file in your dllcache.

But anyhow FIRST download this Fix.bat file to your desktop.
Boot your PC into Safe Mode
Double click the file to run it.
Command prompt window will open.
You should see following message:
"1 file(s) copied"
In that case press any key to close command prompt window.
If you see any error message let me know.

IF THE ABOVE FAILS TO WORK

download the tcpip.sys file from HERE
and manualy put it into the folder: D:\WINDOWS\system32\Drivers\

After you have completed ONE of the steps
PLEASE post a NEW FSS LOG

When the scan completes, click on List of found threats
Click on Export to text file , and save the file to your desktop using a unique name, such as ESETScan. Include the contents of this report in your next reply.
