hey guys i have a serious problem and i don't know how to fix it. a while back i had a rootkit virus or whatever its called and what happened was whenever i would search something in google or any other search engine it would redirect me to spam sites every time i clicked on any of the search result links. i posted a yahoo answers question about that and got a few good answers, i took one of the guys advice and used two programs to get rid of it and once it was gone i had no problems for a few weeks.

well now something is on my computer again, and its similar so i took the same advice from before and used the same two programs. i ran it in safe mode used kapersky rootkit killer and it found another two rootkits. then i ran malwarebytes and it found 3 more. it got rid of them and then i restarted my computer and ran the program again in normal mode. it found 1 more and got rid of it, but this time it didn't solve the problem.

what happens now is this. i will just be sitting on my computer and internet explorer (the browser i don't ever even use anymore) will just open out of nowhere and a million tabs will open with advertisements and videos and all kinds of stuff. if i close out of it, it just happens again like every 2 minutes and it will do this for like 30 minutes and then stop doing it all together for a while and then start doing it all over again. this is driving me nuts and i can't afford to have my computer messed up. i have to many important things on it. do you guys know what is causing this and how i can fix it? please help!!

I also posted this in yahoo answers and got this response. is it good advice?

Sounds like the virus has infiltrated your Registry and is now part of the operating system....:(....no need to fret over this.....follow these instructions carefully to permanently remove it.....

1. Turn off System Restore....the virus is actually in the restore points and has to be killed...that is why it's recycling on your computer........

2. Reboot the Computer....select Safe Mode.....Safe Mode nutralizes the virus for easier removal...

3. Scan with both Malwarebytes and Super anti-spyware.....If you don't have it ...get it here free...
(removed link)

4. Stay off IE and use another browser if you have one to Download Kaspersky's rootkit remover...it's free also.......
(removed link)

5..And the last step which is very Important.....Right click on the bottom task bar and click on Task Mgr and look at the running processes.......they should all end in .exe.....look for anything out of the ordinary like abg123.exe.....ect......and note anything that looks od and write it down on paper...then go to the internet and google it to find out if it's a legit or possible infected program....If you do find any bad ones in the running processes...just click on them and disable.....don't worry...they will just start up again if it's a necessary program............Should take you about 1 hour to complete all of the above.

i also have 1 more question. is this virus able to take any of my files off my computer? i have personal info on it and a few Word Docs with passwords for various internet accounts saved in it. does it have access to any of that?

Greetings and Welcome to The Forums!!

My name is Gringo and I'll be glad to help you with your malware problems.

I have put together somethings for you to keep in mind while I am helping you to make things go easier and faster for both of us

  • Please do not run any tools unless instructed to do so.
    • We ask you to run different tools in a specific order to ensure the malware is completely removed from your machine, and running any additional tools may detect false positives, interfere with our tools, or cause unforeseen damage or system instability.
  • Please do not attach logs or use code boxes, just copy and paste the text.
    • Due to the high volume of logs we receive it helps to receive everything in the same format, and code boxes make the logs very difficult to read. Also, attachments require us to download and open the reports when it is easier to just read the reports in your post.
  • Please read every post completely before doing anything.
    • Pay special attention to the NOTE: lines, these entries identify an individual issue or important step in the cleanup process.
  • Please provide feedback about your experience as we go.
    • A short statement describing how the computer is working helps us understand where to go next, for example: I am still getting redirected, the computer is running normally, etc. Please do not describe the computer as "the same", this requires the extra step of looking back at your previous post.
NOTE: At the top of your post, click on the Watch Topic Button, select Immediate Notification, and click on Proceed. This will send you an e-mail as soon as I reply to your topic, allowing us to resolve the issue faster.

NOTE: Backup any files that cannot be replaced. Removing malware can be unpredictable and this step can save a lot of heartaches if things don't go as planed. You can put them on a CD/DVD, external drive or a pen drive, anywhere except on the computer.

NOTE: It is good practice to copy and paste the instructions into notepad and print them in case it is necessary for you to go offline during the cleanup process. To open notepad, navigate to Start Menu > All Programs > Accessories > Notepad. Please remember to copy the entire post so you do not miss any instructions.

I need to get some reports to get a base to start from so I need you to run these programs first.

-DeFogger-

  • Please download DeFogger to your desktop.

Double click DeFogger to run the tool.
  • The application window will appear
  • Click the Disable button to disable your CD Emulation drivers
  • Click Yes to continue
  • A 'Finished!' message will appear
  • Click OK
  • DeFogger may ask you to reboot the machine, if it does - click OK
Do not re-enable these drivers until otherwise instructed.

-Security Check-

  • Download Security Check by screen317 from here.
  • Save it to your Desktop.
  • Double click SecurityCheck.exe and follow the onscreen instructions inside of the black box.
  • A Notepad document should open automatically called checkup.txt; please post the contents of that document.

-Download DDS-

  • Please download DDS from one of the links below and save it to your desktop:

    Posted Image
Download DDS and save it to your desktop

    Link1
    Link2
    Link3

    • Double-Click on dds.scr and a command window will appear. This is normal.
    • Shortly after two logs will appear:
    • DDS.txt
    • Attach.txt
  • A window will open instructing you save & post the logs
  • Save the logs to a convenient place such as your desktop
  • Copy the contents of both logs & post in your next reply

information and logs

  • In your next post I need the following

  • both reports from DDS
  • report from security check
  • let me know of any problems you may have had

hi gringo thank you for the response. sorry i'm just getting back to you but i needed to backup my files as you suggested so its been taking a very long time. I am a music producer and a writer so i have quite a lot of files but i should be done within 5 hours and then i will follow your instructions. I do have a few more questions and details to add though.

i have been having more problems then just the popups but they are minor in comparison i don't know if they are related to this so i think its a good idea to fill you in on them.
here they are:

1. windows firewall is shut off or not on the proper settings and for some reason i cannot change it. when i go in the control panel and look at the firewall it says this "windows firewall is not using the recommended settings to protect your computer" when i click on "update settings now" i get this error message "windows firewall was unable to make the requested updates" and when i click "turn windows firewall on or off" i get this error message "due to an unidentified problem, windows cannot display windows firewall settings"

2. windows defender: i don't really use it but i found it was strange that this happens when i click on it in the control panel
"windows defender encountered an error: 0x80070424 the specified service does not exist as an installed service. i don't know what that means but i'm guessing maybe i uninstalled it in the past because i was using other programs or maybe it has something to do with this virus.

3. when i click on itunes i can listen to music just fine but when i X out of it, the program closes and completely goes away yet a box will sometimes pop up saying it had problems and had to close (or something like that) even though there was no problem and i closed it myself.
not sure if this is caused by the virus but i said it just in case.

4. i downloaded microsoft security essentials and it did a scan and found nothing but for some reason it will not allow me to update the latest virus definitions.

5. before i downloaded security essentials, i used two programs: malwarebytes and superantispyware (both free versions) they found and got rid of the following:

1. trojan.agent/gen-fraud krypt
2. trojan.agent/gen
3.trojan.agent/gen-tracur
4. adware tracking cookies

i don't remember how many of each i had but the there were a lot of the tracking cookies and like two or three of the others.

i don't know if this matters but there are two other problems i've been having.

1. almost a year ago my disk drive stopped opening. pressing the button does nothing however there is an option in itunes called "eject disk" and when i press it, the drive opens and i was still able to burn cd's and everything just fine but yesterday as i was backing up files to cd's it stopped working. i could still open the tray and take the cd out but it was making really weird noises as it was burning the last disk and as it was finishing the disk it just stopped working and everything that was burned to the cd was erased.

2. my computer fan is very loud when i start my computer and then it calms down but sometimes it will get worse and it stays pretty loud the whole time the computer is on. a few days ago it got even worse, it was making almost like a grinding noise and it sounded like it was losing power and about to die but now it works fine its just still fairly loud. i think i just need to open it up and clean the fans but i wanted to make sure its not in part caused by the virus.

i use firefox but still have internet explorer 5 on my computer since i cannot remove it and that is the browser that always opens with the pop ups.

ok one more thing. if i run those programs and post the log and reports, nobody will be able to see or access my files right? cause i have some personal information that i don't want to be made available to anyone. i just want to be sure. i don't know how that works.

thank you again, i really appreciate your help! i will have the reports and log for you as soon as everything is backed up. it should be by the end of today, maybe sooner depending on how soon i can get it done.

Hello

About personal info - I may not like it and I may complain later but nicely remind me that I am going to allow you to attach your reports (they can be removed later)

The drive and the fan does not sound good - you should not hear the fan making grinding noises (may think about replacing it)

I will be on late tonight and all night so hope to see you then

I will be in and out until then so if you have any questions just let me know

Hello

I Would like you to do the following.

Please print out or make a copy in notpad of any instructions given, as sometimes it is necessary to go offline and you will lose access to them.

Run Combofix:

You may be asked to install or update the Recovery Console (Win XP Only) if this happens please allow it to do so (you will need to be connected to the internet for this)

Before you run Combofix I will need you to turn off any security software you have running, If you do not know how to do this you can find out >here< or >here<

Combofix may need to reboot your computer more than once to do its job this is normal.

You can download Combofix from one of these links. I want you to save it to the desktop and run it from there.
Link 1
Link 2
Link 3
1. Close any open browsers or any other programs that are open.
2. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
When finished, it will produce a report for you.

Note 1: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall

Note 2: If you recieve an error "Illegal operation attempted on a registery key that has been marked for deletion." Please restart the computer

"information and logs"

  • In your next post I need the following
  • Log from Combofix
  • let me know of any problems you may have had
  • How is the computer doing now?
