Good Day!

I come to you after approximately 18 hours of trying to fix this hot mess. My problem started thusly:

1. Virus threat warning flashed on screen while daughter was playing World of Warcraft, AVG said virus was being isolated, computer restarted.
2. No exe files could be run after startup but computer booted up just fine.
3. Ran bootable AVG from USB and saw names like Luhe.Boxed trojan. Removed once, scanned again, virus still present, removed again. On 3rd scan nothing showed up.
4. EXE files still will not run, but computer boots up just fine.
5. Tried various fixes in Regedit and resetting something, something and something else and lots of stuff I don't remember but people said worked. They didn't.
6. I start to doubt the integrity of AVG and spend 2 hours figuring out how to make a bootable CD with Kasparsky Virus program.
7. Kaparsky finds Rootkit trojan and says it disinfected it.
8. Computer will now no longer boot. System repair is tried various times with no success. I go in BIOS and set back to optimal default, still no good.
9. I start entering random commands found on Malwarebytes web site on the command line to make sure my correct partition is active, etc.

I have no idea what I am doing, but whatever it is has not worked. Windows will not boot and can not repair itself. Please save me from myself. I don't know anything about computers but I can follow instructions. I appreciate any help anyone can give me!! Thank you!!

:welcome: Lets give it a try:

Download the appropriate version for your system of the Farbar Recovery Scan Tool and save it to a flash drive.

Plug the flashdrive into the infected PC.

Enter System Recovery Options.

To enter System Recovery Options from the Advanced Boot Options:
  • Restart the computer.
  • As soon as the BIOS is loaded begin tapping the F8 key until Advanced Boot Options appears.
  • Click on Repair your computer menu item.
  • Select US as the keyboard language settings, and then click Next.
  • Select the operating system you want to repair, and then click Next.
  • Select your user account and click Next.
On the System Recovery Options menu you will get the following options:

Startup Repair
System Restore
Windows Complete PC Restore
Windows Memory Diagnostic Tool
Command Prompt

  • Select Command Prompt
  • In the command window type in notepad and press Enter.
  • The notepad opens. Under File menu select Open.
  • Select "Computer" and find your flash drive letter and close the notepad.
  • In the command window type e:\frst.exe (for x64 bit version type e:\frst64) and press Enter
Note: Replace letter e with the drive letter of your flash drive.
  • The tool will start to run.
  • When the tool opens click Yes to disclaimer.
  • Press Scan button.
  • It will make a log (FRST.txt) in the flash drive. Please copy and paste it to your reply.

No request for help throughout private messaging will be attended.

If I have helped you, consider making a donation to help me continue the fight against Malware!

Download MBRFix from here.

Save and extract its contents to the working computer's desktop. There are three files in the MBRFix folder. From these, only copy the MBRFix64.exe to the USB drive.

Also download the enclosed file and save it in the USB drive.

Insert the USB drive into the ailing computer.

Now please enter System Recovery Options and run FRST64 as you did before, except that this time around, press the Fix button just once and wait.

The tool will make a log on the flashdrive (Fixlog.txt). It will also create a file labeled MBRDUMP.txt. Copy and Paste the contents of the Fixlog.txt in your next reply, but attach the MBRDUMP.txt as it is a hex file.

Attempt to boot in Normal Mode and let me know the outcome.

Wow, you are amazing! The computer booted up normally and everything seems to be working just fine now. Do you think the evil virus is out or should I do some more scans? Here is the fixlog and I just want you to know that I am blown away by how fast you all helped me and how amazingly quick you were able to get me up and running. I wish I came here 29 hours ago! Thank you so much for what you do, I will definitely be making a well deserved donation so you can keep up the good work.

Did the MBrdump file get attached correctly?

No it didn't. Please try to attach it again.

We need to perform a few scans. Lets start with Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware.

Posted Image Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from Here. Never download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from other sources.

Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
  • Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
  • The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.(See Extra Note)
  • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy&Paste the entire report in your next reply.
Extra Note:

If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediatly.

Perform an ESET online scan

Note: You can use either Internet Explorer or Mozilla FireFox for this scan.

Note: If you are using Windows Vista or Windows 7, open your browser by right-clicking on its icon and select 'Run as administrator' to perform this scan.

  • First please Disable any Antivirus you have active, as shown in This topic.
  • Note: Don't forget to re-enable it after the scan.
  • Next hold down Control then click on the following link to open a new window to ESET online scannner.
  • Select the option YES, I accept the Terms of Use then click on Start.

Note: If using Mozilla Firefox you will need to download esetsmartinstaller_enu.exe when prompted then double click on it to install.

  • All of the below instructions are compatible with either Internet Explorer or Mozilla FireFox.
  • When prompted allow the Add-On/Active X to install.
  • Make sure that the option Remove found threats is NOT checked, and the option Scan archives is checked.
  • Now click on Advanced Settings and select the following:

    Scan for potentially unwanted applications
    Scan for potentially unsafe applications
    Enable Anti-Stealth Technology

  • Now click on Start.
  • The virus signature database... will begin to download. Be patient this make take some time depending on the speed of your Internet Connection.
  • When completed the Online Scan will begin automatically.
  • Do not touch either the Mouse or keyboard during the scan otherwise it may stall.
  • When completed select Uninstall application on close if you so wish, make sure you copy the logfile first!
  • Now click on Finish.
  • Use notepad to open the logfile located at C:\Program Files\ESET\EsetOnlineScanner\log.txt.
  • Copy and paste that log as a reply to this topic.

Also, this morning I uninstalled CamStudio because it is not a program I use and its name is on the naughty list. A mirc (Realm2009) program got caught by MBAM in the middle of the night trying to do some mischief so I uninstalled that too. Everything is still ok so far, I will wait for further instructions. Thanks and have a great day!

Lets do some cleanup:

Download OTL to your Desktop

  • Please double-click OTL.exe to run it. (Note: If you are running on Vista, right-click on the file and choose Run As Administrator).
  • Copy the lines in the quote below to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose Copy):

    :Commands
    [EMPTYTEMP]
    [EMPTYJAVA]
    [REBOOT]

  • Return to OTL, right click in the "Custom Scans/Fixes" window and choose Paste.
  • Click the red Run Fix button.
  • The computer will restart
  • A report will be produced and saved in the C:\_OTL\MovedFiles folder. Open that report and post its contents in a reply.
