Been here before with the same issues, but it never was completely resolved and now it's getting worse. I ran a MBam--found nothing! Avast Internet Security scan--nothing! Compacted my hard drive-- defragged... what else can I do?
I know part of the issue (I think?) is that for some reason my CPU usage is at 100% a lot of the time, even when it shouldn't be.
Did msconfig and startup is running on selective, could that be an issue?
I think the older I get, the less I know about computers... too much new stuff all the time.

Could someone please help this granny again. Thanks in advance!

Please do the two following items:

a. Download MiniToolBox , save it to your desktop and run it.

Checkmark the following checkboxes:
List last 10 Event Viewer log
List Installed Programs
List Users, Partitions and Memory size.

Click Go and paste the content into your next post.

b. Publish a Snapshot using Speccy - http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic323892.html/page__p__1797792#entry1797792 .

<<Did msconfig and startup is running on selective, could that be an issue?>>

I don't know if it's an "issue" but your settings in msconfig should be for a normal startup. Selective startups are intended to be used temporarily for specific attempts to troubleshoot system problems. See http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows-vista/Run-Selective-Startup-using-System-Configuration .

Uninstall Windows Live OneCare. It has been discontinued and is not supported by Microsoft...and you have the Avast wuite installed. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windows_Live_OneCare_Safety_Scanner .

It also seems that you have MS Security Essentials installed...which may conflict with the Avast suite. I would go with MSE and the Windows firewall...and remove the Avast suite from the system. That may clear up what appears to be connection issues.

After doing the above, I would run the chkdsk /r command and then see how the system runs.

Start/Run...type chkdsk /r and hit Enter. Type Y in new screen and hit Enter. Reboot...the command will execute before booting into Windows.

I am going to follow your suggestions, however I just paid $29.95 for another year of the Avast Internet Security package. I've had it on my system for 3 years and it's had a few glitches with updates... but for the most part I trust it.
Could I uninstall Microsoft Security Essentials instead?
Thank you so very, very much for taking the time to help me out... I truly appreciate it!

It's your system, you make the deicsions :).

I've never thought of keeping any program...especially one that has caused me issues previously...just because I paid for it, but you are the captain of your ship :).

Thank you! I did correct the start-up to mormal, then I was going to uninstall the Windows Live One Care... however, since I am so techno challenged at this age, I can't find it. Not in add/remove programs, not by search.
You are right about the Avast! You are helpful :)

<<...however, since I am so techno challenged at this age, I can't find it.>>

Age is no reason to feel so :), my Alzheimer's grows every day :).

Take a look at what's on Add/Remove Programs...and list anything that starts with "Windows" or "Microsoft". If it's really not there, we can use Revo Uninstaller to double-check that.

Sorry about the age remark... no it doesn't show up in the add/remove. I also did a search and it was not found.

<<Sorry about the age remark>>

No reason to be so...there's nothing more natural than getting older/aging...and I enjoy it. I really don't have Alzheimer's (yet) :).

Anyway...let's try Revo Uninstaller.

Here is how to use Revo Uninstaller:

1) First we download it from here: Revo Uninstaller Free Version. You can skip this Step if you already have it installed. However, you may need to update it. If you have it installed already, and you need to update it, go ahead and open it up and click the AutoUpdate Icon next to Help. The use of this program makes registry changes based upon what you select for removal from the Registry. Before running Revo Uninstaller please run ERUNT before proceeding to back up your registry in case you make a mistake.

2) Select the Program to remove from the list of programs and click the Uninstall button:

3) After selecting the program you want to remove, and confirming you want to uninstall the program, then you will want to select the Advanced Option:

4) Click Next. This will start the uninstaller for the application you picked. When the uninstaller is done, and it proves to be successful, and a reboot is required, then select NO and continue the below steps.

5) Follow the prompts during the uninstallation of the application. Once it closes you will be at this window:

6) Click Next again. Once the window is done scanning for files and other things that did not get removed, you will be presented with this window:

.

You will want to select only the bolded items, then click on Delete. If any entries-usually the last thing listed and not in bold-have a + sign click on the + until you see more bolded items. Once done, click Next.

If it asks you to delete other files, then do so, but pay attention to the warnings.
