The last week or so, my 7-year-old Windows XP desktop has suddenly slowed down to a crawl intermittently, and Norton keeps warning of high CPU usage by Internet Explorer. All is fine for a while, then there's a cursor lag when I'm typing in the browser or files take a while to open or IE eats up all my CPU; then suddenly it works fine for a while again. I don't recall installing anything new shortly before these issues began. This machine had worked as good as new until August. Then I got hit with a Trojan.Dropper/SVCHost-Fake.Process and a PUP toolbar downloader. I cleared up that issue with the generous and expert help of Forum Addict "nasdaq", and my PC was good as new once again until this week. (You can see that issue at http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic465210.html/page__p__2805364__fromsearch__1#entry2805364.)

Now, I ran SuperAntiSpyware, Norton scans, and Malwarebytes. All came up clean (other than some cookies.)

I don't know whether my current issues are malware or problems with the hard disk. How would I know, please?

Thank you, Bleeping Computer, for your expert and generous assistance!

Download Security Check from HERE, and save it to your Desktop.

* Double-click SecurityCheck.exe
* Follow the onscreen instructions inside of the black box.
* A Notepad document should open automatically called checkup.txt; please post the contents of that document.

=============================================================================

Please download Farbar Service Scanner (FSS) and run it on the computer with the issue.
  • Make sure the following options are checked:
    • Internet Services
    • Windows Firewall
    • System Restore
    • Security Center/Action Center
    • Windows Update
    • Windows Defender
  • Press "Scan".
  • It will create a log (FSS.txt) in the same directory the tool is run.
  • Please copy and paste the log to your reply.

====================================================================================

Please download MiniToolBox and run it.

Checkmark following boxes:
  • Report IE Proxy Settings
  • Report FF Proxy Settings
  • List content of Hosts
  • List IP configuration
  • List Winsock Entries
  • List last 10 Event Viewer log
  • List Installed Programs
  • List Devices (do NOT change any settings here)

Click Go and post the result.

=============================================================================

Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware (aka MBAM): https://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/malwarebytes-anti-malware/ to your desktop.

* Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
* At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
* If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
* Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
* When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
* Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
* When completed, a log will open in Notepad.
* Post the log back here.

Be sure to restart the computer.

The log can also be found here:
C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\log-date.txt
Or at C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\log-date.txt

=============================================================================

Download aswMBR to your desktop.
Double click the aswMBR.exe to run it.
If you see this question: Would you like to download latest Avast! virus definitions?" say "Yes".
Click the "Scan" button to start scan.
On completion of the scan click "Save log", save it to your desktop and post in your next reply.

NOTE. aswMBR will create MBR.dat file on your desktop. This is a copy of your MBR. Do NOT delete it.

Thanks, it's hard to tell just yet how the PC is doing, as the problems were/are intermittent. I'll let you know sometime tomorrow after I've used it a while. Thank you for your quick and clear responses!

Hi, Broni!

I used my desktop all day yesterday, and for the most part it was MUCH better. It did not hang nearly as much, although two or three times it just froze up for 50 or 60 seconds. This happened when I was in just two or three applications, e.g. IE, Quicken and Excel.

Might it be a good idea to post this in the hardware forum? I ran a chkdsk, and it completed successfully. I tried booting into the utility partition, but the system said “Utility partition not available.” I had to force shutdown by pressing the power button. I was able to run a hardware diagnostic on my C: drive successfully. Don’t know what else to try.

Thanks again; at least the PC is usable now. J

Download and install System Information for Windows
Run the program.
After it scans your computer, navigate to Hardware>Sensors and post all info from there.

Are you doing something in particular when the computer hangs?

No, I'm not, although generally I have IE open when it happens.

Last night, I left my PC on; it goes into "Locked" mode after 15 minutes. This morning, it was really bad: First, when I got on, it worked fine for about 15 minutes, including IE. Then, suddenly, everything locked up: IE kept hanging, none of my desktop icons was clickable at all, Microsoft Outlook wouldn't open, but.... Firefox worked OK. Now, I'm on Firefox. I just tried IE again, and it's doing something weird. When I have multiple tabs open and I try to close one of them, IE closes the tab and then opens a new blank tab. I gave up and closed IE.

Please note that I've run every malware checker I've ever heard of, and I cannot get into the utility partition.

Any suggestions (on top of the many useful ones you have so kindly provided?) You are great!

Wait! Something new just happened as I was typing this. A dialog box popped up on my screen:

Title is
"Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library".

Message is
"Runtime Error! Program C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe.
R6025
- pure virtual function call"

Does this provide a clue?
