I have an issue that I'd like some opinions on. I have a Dell Studio 15 running Win7, SP1. IE9 shows no version info. I reverted back to IE8 and the issue persisted. So I went back to IE9. Issue persists. I see other strange behavior, as well. There seems to be an issue with Java/JavaScript. When I attempt to go the Dell Support Site, I am unable to click certain buttons on the webpage. Hovering over one of the buttons, there is a reference to Javascript, which I did verify was enabled. I tried Jave v6 and v7, neither fixed the issue. Cant view the video of the "Floating Chair" on the Facebook main page. Maybe a Flash issue, but that was verified/updated as well. I also noticed that after about an hour, the display keeps turning off, every few seconds. This seems to happen everytime I click something and randomly by itself. (drop dows menu, scroll bars, etc.) Very odd behavior. I went into advanced power settings and set the screen NEVER to turn off. Still happens. It's almost like some malware that is attempting to drive me crazy.

Any opinions on these topics would be greatly appreciated.

Hi please try going here http://www.eset.com/us/online-scanner/ for a scan. It's best if ran in IE you can run it in firefox however there is one extra step involved. You will need to disable your current installed Anti-Virus

Select the option YES, I accept the Terms of Use then click on: START
When prompted allow the Add-On/Active X to install.
Make sure that the option Remove found threats and the option Scan archives are checked.
Now click on Advanced Settings and select the following:

Enable Anti-Stealth Technology
Now click on:START
The virus signature database... will begin to download. Be patient this may take some time depending on the speed of your Internet Connection.
When completed the Online Scan will begin automatically.
Do not touch either the Mouse or keyboard during the scan otherwise it may stall.
When the scan completes, press the LIST OF THREATS FOUND button
You can delete what was found
When completed select Uninstall application on close if you so wish, make sure you copy the logfile first!
Now click on: FINISH

Do not forget to re-enable your Anti-Virus application after running the above scan!

Are you up to date with all Windows Updates, does Windows Updates work properly?

I will run the ESET scanner when I get a chance. It may be a few days. The machine is not mine and I no longer have it, but I have a feeling that i will have it again soon. I was looking to get some ideas about the missing IE version info and Java issues, for future reference. Windows update was working. I did install SP1 and all subsequent updates, after I realized the SP had not been applied.

I appreciate an opinions, and I do understand that it's hard to comment on something with out scan results.

Hello ,I'd like to add that Java and Java script are 2 differernt items.

How is JavaScript different from Java?
The JavaScript programming language, developed by Netscape, Inc., is not part of the Java platform.
JavaScript, does not create applets or stand-alone applications. In its most common form today, JavaScript resides inside HTML documents, and can provide levels of interactivity to web pages that are not achievable with simple HTML.

Listed are key differences between the Java and JavaScript. •Java is an OOP programming language while Java Script is an OOP scripting language.
•Java creates applications that run in a virtual machine or browser while JavaScript code is run on a browser only.
•Java code needs to be compiled while JavaScript code are all in text.
•They require different plug-ins

That said the latest Java SE Runtime Environment (JRE) is Version 7
Version Number: 7.0. Update 9
Older versions have vulnerabilities that malicious sites can use to exploit and infect your system and should be un installed.

Attempted to run ESET (in safe mode) and after i click the "accept terms" checkbox, the Start button does not activate and can not be clicked to initiate the scan. I had Java 7 update 9 and the latest Flash. Not quite sure how to proceed. Seems like basic functionality is not working.

Will ESET run in Normal? Or use another..
Please run the F-Secure Online Scanner
Follow the Instruction here for installation.
Accept the License Agreement.
Once the ActiveX installs,Click Full System Scan
Once the download completes, the scan will begin automatically.
The scan will take some time to finish, so please be patient.
When the scan completes, click the Automatic cleaning (recommended) button.
Click the Show Report button and Copy&Paste the entire report in your next reply.
