I am having trouble starting up my laptop, it loads Startup repair nearly every time and has been running progressively slower and slower over the last few days taking longer and longer for the comoputer to start up. A couple of times it was just shut down straight away when I switched it on, but the battery is full. I don't whether I have a virus or if my computer is just at the end of it's life.

I'm new to the forum so I don't exactly know how things work, I don't even know if I've posted this in the right area but...

Please help, any advice or assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Can you boot into safe mode?

System manufacturer and model?

Any signs of malware prior to onset of problems?

There was no warning which I noticed. I have managed to get through in normal mode, but it's very slow, and just to retrieve files is taking hours. Windows are freezing with the (not responding). I find that it doesn't even turn on if I don't have it plugged into the power initially.

It's a Toshiba Satellite A500 running on Windows Vista

Thankyou

I don't know how old this laptop is, but the battery typically will last for about three years, between 400 - 500 charging cycles. What you posted indicates that the battery may be on it's last legs.

When you start the computer and it prompts you to use the repair do you allow it to run?

Yeah, I've let Startup repair try 3 times, it takes about 30min and then says that it couldn't do anything to fix the problem and ask me to send the information to microsoft.

I replaced the battery on this laptop already 1 year ago, there's no problems with it as long as the computer is plugged in when it starts up. The laptop itself is 3 years old, it came out in 2009.

If the repair was unsuccessful there should be a summary of the problem at the end with links to get more information. Are you seeing these? If so, would you please post them here.

Something changed in the details, but I thought I saved it onto my USB but it wasn't there when I came to post it here so I have rebooted and tried a fourth time, it didn't save again that time

so, here are the results for the 5th time running Startup Repair, I'll put it up here this time so that you don't have to download anything

It looks like there's problem with the hdd, to test that I would like you to download the manufacturer's diagnostic tool and boot from the disk you will make. The only problem here is finding out who that manufacturer is. Once we know who that is I will provide you with a link to the site, and which test to download. There usually are comprehensive instructions at their site.

You never answered the question about being able to boot into Safe Mode, if you can then we should be able to find out with a application like SIW.

If you can't you will need to pull the hdd from the computer. This actually is pretty straight forward, there is a video which shows how to do this, you can view it Here.

The only thing that wasn't mentioned which is important is that you should discharge any static electricity before you touch the hdd or anything inside the case. To do this you need to touch something metal, this should be done from the location where you will be performing this.

Family and loved ones will always be a priority in my daily life.  You never know when one will leave you.
