My Dad's desktop has been giving him the blue screen of death recently, last week or so to be specific. No changes have been made to the computer to cause this. I took a screenshot of the most recent bsod and I also have the log from bluescreenview.

I would appreciate some help in figuring out the problem. Thanks in advance.

Hello again, esmn.

Let's collect some more information: I'll have a look at it and help you try to resolve the problem.

:step1: Download the following 2 files and save both to the My Documents folder:

:step2: Go to the My Documents folder and run #1 (BSOD_XP_v1.3_jcgriff2_PROD_.exe). (That will also run #2.)

It will take a little time to complete: Please be patient and wait for it to finish.
A new folder named TSF_XP_Support will be created in My Documents.

:step3: Zip up the newly created TSF_XP_Support folder.
  • Right-click on the TSF_XP_Support folder > Send to ... > Compressed (zipped) Folder.
The newly created zip file will be located in the My Documents folder.

:step4: Please upload the zip file to a file sharing website of your choice and and post a link to it in this thread so that we can access your uploaded zip file.

Note: The BC forums will allow a total attachment size of only 512 kb (and what you need to attach will exceed this limit).
See the suggestions in the following links for recommendations on file sharing websites:

I can recommend Posted Image: Also suitable is Posted Image

:step5: Please Publish a Snapshot using Speccy, and post a link to it in this thread.
  • It is a convenient and accurate way of providing us with details of your computer specifications.

:step6: Please download MiniToolBox, save it to your Desktop and run it.
  • Checkmark the following checkboxes:
    • List Installed Programs
  • Click Go.
When the scan is finished, a text file will open in a Notepad window.
  • Copy the entire contents of the Notepad window, and paste in your reply.
(Result.txt will be saved in the same directory the tool is run.)

Hey AustrAlien! I promise this will be the last blue screen issue I will bring to you :)
Hopefully this computer isn't dying like the last one.

7 minidumps are available from this year (2012), going back to September.
  • (31 minidumps in all, going back to 2007)
Mini112312-01.dmp	KERNEL_MODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED	0x1000008e
Mini112112-01.dmp	KERNEL_MODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED	0x1000008e
Mini111312-01.dmp	KERNEL_MODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED	0x1000008e
Mini111212-01.dmp	KERNEL_MODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED	0x1000008e
Mini102712-01.dmp	KERNEL_MODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED	0x1000008e
Mini092612-01.dmp	KERNEL_MODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED	0x1000008e
Mini090212-01.dmp	PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA	0x10000050

All 7 minidumps crashed with Chrome as the running process.
PROCESS_NAME: chrome.exe
and WinDbg blamed win32.sys for all crashes.
Probably caused by : win32k.sys

The 6 latest crashes were virtually identical
  • BugCheck 1000008E, {c0000005, , , }
  • FAILURE_BUCKET_ID: 0x8E_win32k!PFEOBJ::vFreepfdg+45
A list of Norton/Symantec drivers running on the system, some of which are very outdated:

eeCtrl.sys Wed Aug 01 09:33:30 2012 ... Norton/Symantec
EraserUtilDrv11210.sys Wed May 16 10:33:04 2012 ... Symantec Eraser Utility Driver
EraserUtilDrv11220.sys Wed Aug 01 09:33:30 2012 ... Norton Internet Security driver
naveng.sys Thu Sep 06 07:45:35 2012 ... Norton/Symantec
navex15.sys Thu Sep 06 07:43:39 2012 ... Norton/Symantec
savrt.sys Tue Dec 20 15:24:48 2005 ... Norton Internet Security
Savrtpel.sys Tue Dec 20 15:24:50 2005 ... Norton Internet Security
SPBBCDrv.sys Tue Feb 07 07:34:12 2006 ... Norton/Symantec Firewall driver
SYMEVENT.SYS Tue Jan 17 07:53:50 2006 ... Norton/Symantec Event Library
SYMREDRV.SYS Wed Jan 25 14:56:26 2006 ... Norton/Symantec Redirector Filter driver
SYMTDI.SYS Wed Jan 25 14:56:23 2006 ... Norton/Symantec Network Dispatch Driver

There is no clear-cut cause of the BSODs:
  • I think it most likely that Norton/Symantec drivers (particularly the 2005, 2006 dated ones) are responsible for the crashes.
  • The fact that Chrome was the running process in all crashes makes that application a suspect also:
  • Either Chrome, the application itself
    or ...
  • Possibly a malware infection within Chrome?
Recommended actions:
  • Uninstall all Norton/Symantec applications by the usual means and then download and run the Norton Removal Tool to ensure the removal is thorough.
    • LiveUpdate 3.1 (Symantec Corporation) (Version: 3.1.0.99)
    • Symantec AntiVirus (Version: 10.1.394.0)
  • Download and install an alternative antivirus for the time being, and I suggest MSE (Microsoft Security Essentials) as the best option in your case.
    • Ensure the Windows firewall is enabled.
  • Uninstall Chrome (for the time-being).
    • Google Chrome (Version: 23.0.1271.64)
  • Thoroughly check the system for malware.
Test the system for some time to ascertain whether or not the problem is resolved.

What I will do is uninstall them one at a time. First I'll get rid of symantec and let my dad use the computer for a while and see if anything happens. If it crashes then i'll get rid of chrome and do the same.

I'm only home for thanksgiving so I won't have access to the computer after tomorrow, at least for a few weeks. But at least we know that these two programs are the likely causes of the problem.

Once again thank you for your help, you're awesome.

:thumbup2: Let me know if you have any further problems.

If the system crashes again, zip of the relevant minidump(s) and attach the zipped file to a reply:
  • Navigate to C:\Windows\Minidump <<< folder
The minidumps will be found inside this folder.
  • Right-click on the most recent minidump file > Send to ... > Compressed (zipped) Folder.
The zip file will be located in the same place (the Minidump folder).
  • Attach the zip file to your next reply.
When you click on Add Reply, you will see the facility to attach a file just below the box where you type your message.
Good luck!
