Hi,

I have a vaio laptop and its been running low on space on the c: drive for quite some time. Right now it says there is only about 10GB left out of 224GB. I donít understand what it taking up so much room. I donít have many programs installed (control panel says only about 3GB worth). Iíve run disk cleanups, but they donít help that much. My family has had this laptop for a few years, and I donít think defragments were being run during this time.

Any suggestions are appreciated.

Download Windirstat from here

http://windirstat.info/wds_current_setup.exe

Install and launch it

Expand your drives. You should be able to find the file or folder that is consuming disk space.

Thanks for the post. My antivirus software won't let me access that site. Do you have any other suggestions? Do you think it really is just as simple as a file or folder taking up so much room?

Try downloading from safemode with networking or disable your antivirus

Thanks. I tried it and it started fine, but it keeps on freezing. I get a "not responding message".

Alternate link at http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/windirstat/ .

Most likely, it's not your AV preventing the download...just IE security settings working properly.

Right-click on the new line appearing in your browser which begins "To help protect your security..." and click "Download file."

I tried the link and dowloaded with no problem. The problems start once the program starts to run. If I click anywhere, the program stops and I get a "Not Responding" message. If I just let it run without doing anything I still get the same message before I hit the 1/3rd mark.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

My problem seems to be getting worse. I've gone from 10GB remaining to 4GB in such a short period. I've tried running WinDirStat numerous times, but it keeps freezing.

Maybe I could put a list of things and you could tell me what I can get rid of? My personal documents do not take up much space.

Any help is appreciated.

Thanks for that.

When I run Speccy I get the following message
"CPU dll init failed (error 2)! Some information will not be displayed!"
The program then exits.

I tried running Speccy again and it worked this time. Here's the link

Problem defined per Speccy:

Partition 1, Partition ID: Disk #0
Partition #1Disk Letter: C:File System: NTFSVolume Serial Number: 1CC131DDSize: 224GBUsed Space: 217GB (97%)Free Space: 6.84GB (3%)

You clearly need to move video files, music files...which are filling up your hard drive...to some other media (DVD, hard drive, external drive, etc.)

Until that is done, you will have problems.

Windows gets flaky when system partition has less than 10-15% free space.

Another utility you can try to see what files are largest: TreeSize Pro Trial - http://www.jam-software.com/treesize/ .

Thanks for your suggestions. Even though it was only a few GB, I transfered a lot of photos and music.

I ran WinDirStat again and got some confusing results. It said that my C:Drive size is 105.9 GB. This is weird because when I click on My Computer, it says my C Drive is a lot more full.

I tried narrowing the results from WinDirStat to see a better breakdown. I kept expanding the folders with the most GB. It looks like it is frozen again, but here is what I got so far. Any suggestions based on this?

C: 105.9GB
Users: 44.6 GB
App data:
Local
Microsoft
Temp Internet Files
Low
Content.IE5
KTJ5PKOL 16.9 GB
MA3P2D10 14.3 GB
P09E0PZ4 5.7 GB

I tried expanding KTJ5PKOL and that is where it froze up.

I've attached a print screen of how far I got if that is helpful.

Thanks again

That's not helpful, IMO.

If you are going to use a tool...please follow the developer's instructions for using it.
