 I screwed up and believe I have qoolaid, which I can not remove. I have started receiving popup ads, and performed several scans on the computer. Norton AntiVirus has removed wydea.dat (Norton labels it Qoolaid) several times. Spyware Doctor has removed ClikOptimizer several times in the Safe Mode. I have some unknown processes running in Task Manager - 3 copies of hobfo.exe and 1 copy of rfjbof.exe. These processes reappear each time I use End Process. Several times I have attempted to have Hijackthis remove the F2 items in the attached report, but they immediately reappear.

I have examined the Registry to the end of my abilities. During this, I found reference to a file called jnvcu. I could not find this file on my computer until I booted into Safe Mode, Diagnostic Boot. Then the file is found in c:\windows\pss, and is called C:\windows\pss\jnvcu.exeCommon Startup (125k). This file reappears on each delete. I also found all my startup entries in \pss with a Common Startup tag on each one. The startup programs were not in the standard startup folder. All references to the registry files hobfo.exe, rfjbof.exe, and skhjykt.exe are not found in the c:\windows\system32 as shown in the registry entries. Any time the registry entries are edited or removed, they immediately reappear.

In the Safe Mode, Diagnostic Boot, 3 msconfig startup processes are present, and can not be deleted. 2 rfjbof.exe and 1 jnvcu.exe. I can not eliminate these 3 processes during any attempt at re-booting through msconfig changes.

I am enclosing some registry entries I have placed in a Word file, which I have copied below. Maybe they can be of some help to you. These entries are the result of registry searches in 3 boot modes - full system boot, basic safe mode, and safe mode, diagnostic boot.

Thanks for any help you can provide.
Bill

Hi,

The forums are really busy, that explains why logs get behind. We start with the oldest logs first. If you still need some help, please start with posting a new hijackthislog in this thread. Don't start with a new thread.
Then I'll take a look.

Hello,

Download and Save blacklight to your C:\ Important!!.
F-Secure Blacklight: http://www.f-secure.com/blacklight/try.shtml
Then go to start > run and copy and paste next command in the field:

C:\blbeta.exe /expert

This should open your blacklight.
click > scan then > next,
You'll see a list of all items found.
Don't choose for rename yet! I want to see the log first, because legit items can also be present there...
There must be also a log on your C:\ with the name fsbl.xxxxxxx.log (the xxxxxxx stand for numbers)
Post the contents of the log in your next reply.

Hello,

Now use blacklight again in exactly the same way as before.
Once it shows the files found in the window, select each of them and press the 'rename' button below.
You should see 'rename' next to each entry now.

Once you selected them all, click next.
Blacklight will give you a warning if you are sure you want to rename these files, click agree/yes;
Then it will ask you to reboot.
Click OK.

Your system should reboot now.

After reboot...

* Start HijackThis, close all open windows leaving only HijackThis running. Place a check against each of the following:

F2 - REG:system.ini: Shell=Explorer.exe, C:\WINDOWS\system32\hobfo.exe
F2 - REG:system.ini: UserInit=C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\Userinit.exe,skhjykt.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [qwnsod] C:\WINDOWS\system32\rfjbof.exe reg_run
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [ntutp] C:\WINDOWS\system32\rfjbof.exe reg_run
O4 - Global Startup: jnvcu.exe
O6 - HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Control Panel present

* Click on Fix Checked when finished and exit HijackThis.
Make sure your Internet Explorer is closed when you click Fix Checked!

Then delete next files:

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Startup\jnvcu.exe.ren
C:\WINDOWS\system32\xmjbfne.dll.ren
C:\WINDOWS\system32\rfjbof.exe.ren
C:\WINDOWS\system32\skhjykt.exe.ren
C:\WINDOWS\system32\hobfo.exe.ren
C:\WINDOWS\pbqhf.dll.ren

* Clean your Cache and Cookies in IE:
  • Close all instances of Outlook Express and Internet Explorer
  • Go to Control Panel > Internet Options > General tab
  • Click the "Delete Cookies" button
  • Next to it, Click the "Delete Files" button
  • When prompted, place a check in: "Delete all offline content", click OK
* Clean your Cache and Cookies in Firefox (In case you also have Firefox installed):
  • Go to Tools > Options.
  • Click Privacy in the menu on the left side of the Options window.
  • Click the Clear button located to the right of each option (History, Cookies, Cache).
  • Click OK to close the Options window
Alternatively, you can clear all information stored while browsing by clicking Clear All.
A confirmation dialog box will be shown before clearing the information.
* Clean other Temporary files + Recycle bin
  • Go to start > run and type: cleanmgr and click ok.
  • Let it scan your system for files to remove.
  • Make sure Temporary Files, Temporary Internet Files, and Recycle Bin are the only things checked.
  • Press OK to remove them.
Reboot once again and use blacklight again to scan.
Post a new hijackthislog together with the new blacklight log in your next reply.

I did this procedure twice. It does not look like it helped. The following items were not present or found on my computer during the process.

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [qwnsod] C:\WINDOWS\system32\rfjbof.exe reg_run
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [ntutp] C:\WINDOWS\system32\rfjbof.exe reg_run
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Startup\jnvcu.exe.ren
C:\WINDOWS\system32\rfjbof.exe.ren
C:\WINDOWS\system32\skhjykt.exe.ren
C:\WINDOWS\system32\hobfo.exe.ren

I did a computer search for these items, and could not find them anywhere.

I have a question first...
Did you select rename for each entry in blacklight what was found? I mean, not only one entry, but all of them. After selecting each entry and clicking the rename button, there should be rename next to each of them. Then click next.
Can you confirm you did it that way?

I highlighted each item in the Blacklight list, and individually selected rename for each of them.

Ok, no worries. I already know where the problem is..
Backlight can't deal with the file present here:

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Startup\jnvcu.exe

So let's deal with this in another way.. because I installed this infection on my system as well and it looks like blacklight is also missing some related entries, so perform next:

Download FindQoologic.zip save it to your C:\.
http://downloads.subratam.org/Lon/FindQool.zip

Extract (unzip) the files inside into their own folder called FindQool.
Read here how to unzip/extract properly:
http://metallica.geekstogo.com/xpcompressedexplanation.html

This folder should be present on your C:\
In case it's not present there, move the FindQool folder to C:\ otherwise it won't work.
Then open the FindQool folder.
Locate and double-click the Qlocate.bat file to run it.

This will scan your system.
Wait until a text opens.
Post this in your next reply

Ok, let's deal with it now. It is important you follow my steps exactly as I describe!

* Download Killbox.
Click killbox.exe.
Select the option "Delete on reboot".
Click the button: All Files (!important!)
Now it should flash green.

Now copy the next bold part:

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\SKHJYKT.EXE
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\XMJBFNE.DLL
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\WDYEA.DAT
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\RFJBOF.EXE
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\HOBFO.EXE
C:\DOCUME~1\ALLUSE~1\STARTM~1\PROGRAMS\STARTUP\JNVCU.EXE

Open 'file' in the killboxmenu on top and choose Paste from clipboard

Then press the button that looks like a red circle with a white X in it.
Killbox will tell you that all listed files will be removed on next reboot and asks if you would like to Reboot now, click YES
If you don't get that message, reboot manually.

Your computer must reboot now.

After reboot,

Open hijackthis and check and fix next entries in it if still present:

F2 - REG:system.ini: Shell=Explorer.exe, C:\WINDOWS\system32\hobfo.exe
F2 - REG:system.ini: UserInit=C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\Userinit.exe,skhjykt.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [qwnsod] C:\WINDOWS\system32\rfjbof.exe reg_run
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [ntutp] C:\WINDOWS\system32\rfjbof.exe reg_run

Then run Findqool again (Click Qlocate.bat) and post the log in your next reply together with a new hijackthislog.

It looks like we indeed solved it.
Thanks to this thread, I've learned not to use Blacklight again on this in the future, because it can't deal with it. Maybe a bug.. I don't know.

Perform a full scan with an updated Adaware SE and/or Spybot S&D to get rid of some leftovers in the registry if still present.
I know Adaware and Spybot flag the leftovers and deletes them.
If you don't have those programs yet, you can find the downloadlocations in my sig.

Let me know in your next reply how things are running now.
