Hi all, I'm new here and hoping someone can help me with this problem I'm having. I can't seem to play a certain game without the computer freezing and shutting off on me, but it doesn't end there. After using system restore and trying to run windows update my computer did the same thing again.

The symptom that puzzles me the most is the system will refuse to boot into windows for a bit after a shutdown. It will get to the Starting Windows screen and stop loading during the logo formation, ending in a shutdown. This seems to happen regardless of Last Known Good Configuration, Safe Mode, etc.

My computer is a Toshiba Satellite a505 laptop. I have run sfc /scannow, chkdsk /f /r, and two memory tests. sfc found nothing, chkdsk found one bad cluster in the free space, and the first memory test made the computer shut down towards the beginning. The second memory test was Windows Memory Diagnostic and that shut down in the 6th area of the first pass. I'm suspecting it's the RAM, but I can't be certain, especially since both sticks boot up the computer just fine by themselves. This started happening about 3 days ago after the laptop fell from my lap on accident. I really hope I don't have to buy a new computer...

Hello,

I wonder if the laptop is overheating.

1. ) To help us get a better look at your computer's hardware, please download and install Speccy by Piriform. (mirror site)
  • During installation, uncheck "Install the free Google Toolbar along with Speccy."
  • Run Speccy and from the top menu, select File --> Publish Snapshot. Click "Yes" to proceed.
  • Click, Copy to Clipboard and paste this address into your next post.

2. ) Please download MiniToolBox by farbar, save it to your Desktop, and run it.

Check the following checkboxes:
  • List last 10 Event Viewer log
  • List Installed Programs
  • List Users, Partitions and Memory size.
  • List Minidump Files
Please click Go. Post the result (Result.txt). A copy of Result.txt will be saved in the same directory the tool is run.

Regards,
Brooks

Hi Artrocks, thank you for responding.

This laptop's always had overheat problems due to Toshiba's stupidity with blocking the only fan halfway, but this is different. During the freeze, there is no hard drive activity, while most of the time with an overheat my laptop would shut off immediately.

I also woke up to find my computer completely frozen today. No hard drive activity, no responsiveness, just a frozen screen. I had to restart the computer to post this message.

I'm starting to wonder if I should take apart the laptop and look for damage...

Anyways, Speccy: http://speccy.piriform.com/results/1cOybcM5sVx2g0Dr0N6rIZ7

I'm not sure whether you wanted me to attach the file itself or post the contents, but here are the contents.

Don't worry about the ?????? thing that's installed, that's a Korean game I occasionally play.

Hello Majinken,

1. ) It looks as if you have two anti-virus programs on your computer. Having two or more anti-virus programs running at the same time can cause your computer to run slowly, become unstable and in rare cases, crash.

Please uninstall one of the following:

  • AhnLab Online Security
  • Microsoft Security Essentials (Version: 4.1.522.0)

2. ) From your Speccy Snapshot:
Current Uptime: 759 sec (0 d, 00 h, 12 m, 39 s)

CPU
Intel Core i7 720QM @ 1.60GHz: 72 C
Motherboard
TOSHIBA Portable PC (CPU): 71 C

After running for just 12 minutes, your CPU and motherboard temperatures are concerningly high. The fact that the computer "shuts off" during chkdsk or memory tests indicates overheating. Continued overheating will lead to damage of the motherboard. The overheating problem should be corrected or a least mitigated (lessened). This may have to be done at a computer repair shop. Are you using a cooling pad?

This started happening about 3 days ago after the laptop fell from my lap on accident.

3. ) I would run a hard drive diagnostic test to rule out a damaged hard drive. You may not be able to complete the test due to overheating. It could take 1-2 hours to complete the long test. If not, an alternative would be to remove the hard drive from your Toshiba and attach it to another computer, then run the diagnostics.

  • I would recommend SeaTools for DOS
  • Burn the "iso" file to make a bootable CD.
  • Boot the computer from the CD.
  • Select Basic tests from top menu.
  • Run Long test. If the drive is good, it will "Pass."

Regards,
Brooks

Hi Artrocks,

Cooling pad, huh? Might be a worthwhile investment until I get a new computer.

As for SeaTools, I'll get back to you when the testing is done.

Edit - Well, that was weird. SeaTools didn't even run the test. o.O It initialized and then went to the command prompt like the test was over. Am I not using it correctly?

Edit 2 - Found this out only just now, but my hard drive doesn't want to stay in the area it goes in. It wants to push out at an angle. It's like this:
Underscores are the front, dashes are the back.
_____----

when the computer is upside down.

The hard drive isn't bent or anything, which makes me wonder if the connection area is damaged.

Edit 3 - Forget what I said. I just used Speedfan to look at the temperature of my computer after a shutdown and all my cores were running at above 80 degrees celsius. I think the CPU is overheating. I'll look into getting a cooling pad. Do you have any suggestions?

Sorry, but I didn't receive any notification as you edited your post.

Laptop overheating; Things to try, short of disassembly:
  • Make sure that the CPU fan is working. You should feel warm to hot air exiting the exhaust vent on the side; especially during heavy computing.
  • Make sure that the laptop isn't placed on a soft surface where the air intake, usually on the bottom of the laptop, could become blocked.
  • Power laptop off, remove AC power cord, and remove battery. Use a can of compressed air on the intake and exhaust vents . Some recommend using a vacuum on the exhaust vent while blowing air into the intake.
  • Adjust the computer power settings via Control Panel to save power on components, to turn off hard drives sooner, or allow sleep or stand-by mode.
  • Use a laptop cooling pad.

Regards,
Brooks

Something just hit me: I think it's my fan not running properly. I barely feel anything from my fan when it used to run at a much higher speed when needed. SpeedFan also failed to detect it. A scan with the trial version of AIDA64 Extreme Edition's trial shows the fan is blowing at 79 percent for CPU and 100 percent for GPU, yet I barely feel any suction... The fan should be working faster if the CPU is running at 62 degrees celsius.

Sorry to double post, but I'd like to update.

I got a cooling pad and it only delayed, not prevented, the overheat.

I also took the laptop apart and found the vent that lets air out the side is only halfway attached to the laptop, angling up along the side of the laptop. I'd like to glue it back on. What could I use for that? My warranty expired a long time ago, so I'm not worried about that.

Edit- Should I be worried that the CPU takes 55.04 watts when I'm doing something like opening firefox? Right now it's only using 15.34 watts, but I'm not doing much.

Hello Majinken,

I'm not sure what type of glue to recommend for the vent. Some type of epoxy should work I would think.

You might want to start a new post in Internal Hardware regarding the vent, high temps, and wattage. Many knowledgeable people there when it comes to the internal workings of the computer.

Give a quick summary of the problem and link to this topic.

Regards,
Brooks

How about take and air compressor and an air chuck and blow the exhaust out .... just cause you feel any air may not be enough..... or rip it apart clean it out and reseat the processor, new thermal compound and try again .... i think you have a clogged air flow... i work for a computer repair facility and 99% of the time its just clogged ..... but doent rule out damage to the board due to all of the over heating.....

Laptop overheating is such a hassle. What I would recommend if you can't do it yourself is to take it to a repair shop and have them disassemble, clean and reapply thermal compound to all of the heating apparatus parts.

I would not be recommending this if your laptop was under warranty, since dis-assembly of some of these parts could put you out of warranty.

This may seem like a really inconvenient solution, but anyone who is familiar with this procedure could do it in well under 15 minutes and have you back up and running.

I have found that the OEM thermal paste put onto many laptops when they are made is quite substandard. Even the most generic aftermarket thermal compound usually lasts quite a bit longer when properly applied. I've been appalled at some of the thermal compound jobs I've seen when disassembling laptops.

Laptop operating temperatures will be higher than desktop machine temperatures though. I do want to say that. I agree that you could be running lower than the 70+ degrees you're running right now, but a laptop running at a constant 70 would not be bad. If this is an overheating issue, what is happening is it is not running at that 70 degrees constantly, and at some point it is beginning to jump.
