A friend asked me to take a look at his computer. I am a Linux user and haven't fooled with Windows malware in quite some time. When I got to look at the machine after login I get a white screen. Even attempting to start the task manager does not working, just a white background. He got some version of the FBI money virus. I didn't know that attempting to use a virus removal tool could make problems worse. I thought downloading the kaspersky 10 cd would fix the problem, and unfortunatly I choose to remove infections. It detected a few rootkits and many viruses, and I rebooted the machine. However, I still had the same white screen. Random characters appear in the top left hand corner, in a slightly off white font for a few seconds at login.
Where do I go from here? I am right now running the AVG cd. I have had no luck using windows+r to get a windows dialog. I tried to make a bootable windows CD with UBCD4Win, but Microsoft decided to revoke my old valid win XP product keys. Happy that I run Linux my machines...
