I have a HP Pavilion laptop that I purchased in 2008. It runs windows vista. Last night I put the screen down (which makes my laptop sleep) and came back after 30 minutes. The light turned on for a little bit, but then it turned back off. The CPU and fan is running and I can see the display (barely), but the light will not turn on. This morning I turned it back on without the battery (but the power cord was plugged in) and it ran fine. I turned it back off and brought it to school with me. Now the laptop screen will not turn back on again. How do I fix this problem and get my laptop light to turn back on again?

Note: The day before, I updated windows vista (not sure if that has to do with anything).

Have you checked or revert back to defaults the power/sleep options first? What do you mean by updated?

The update that Windows receives every Tuesday (supposedly). I have checked those options and nothing seems to help.

I can see the display (barely)

This indicates as most likely a backlight monitor problem or if fortunate enough, see this > thread <.
