When I tried to start ESET today (because my computer was running very slow) I got this message "can not get update. Is proxy configured?"

I googled the above message and following the advice I found, I went to START, RUN --typed in inetcpl.cpl, pressed ENTER and clicked on CONNECTION, then LAN setting -- but 'USE A PROXY 'wasn't checked.

But on the CONNECTION page , next to the following instruction: to create homepage tabtype each address in it's own line, there was this in the box
http://search.babylon.com/?affID=110000&tt=3712_1&babsrc=HP_ss&mntrId=d467837b0000000000000015584d458f

Hmmm.
I use Firefox.
In internet options in TOOLS, my homepage is given as Mozilla Firefox Start Page and I'm not being taken to Babylon page at all.

But when I opened Internet explorer (which I almost never use) it has Babylon as the start page. How can I change it and what do I change it to? it's listed as my home page in Internet Options (in Internet Explorer. )Nothing else appears in drop down menu.

I have Malwarebytes pro but it didn't find anything. I have Avast too.
And I'm using windows XP.

Any advice on getting ESET to work and getting rid of Babylon as default homepage in Internet explorer would be great.

Open IE, go Tools>Internet options>Advanced tab and click on "Reset" button.
Restart IE.
Better?

Next...

Please download AdwCleaner by Xplode onto your desktop.
  • Close all open programs and internet browsers.
  • Double click on adwcleaner.exe to run the tool.
  • Click on Delete.
  • Confirm each time with Ok.
  • Your computer will be rebooted automatically. A text file will open after the restart.
  • Please post the contents of that logfile with your next reply.
  • You can find the logfile at C:\AdwCleaner[S1].txt as well.

Next...

  • Double click on adwcleaner.exe to run the tool.
  • Click on Uninstall.
  • Confirm with yes.
