Hi,

I got nailed with some malware which replaced my wallpaper with one of those annoying "You might be infected <etc.> Click here!" messages.

I managed to remove the malware but (1) the upper left corner of my screen is totally white (icons show, but no wallpaper) and (2) every icon is highlit as though I'd "Selected All".

BTW I run Norton and the MS Spyware beta regularly; AdAware occasionally; and just purchased (and ran) Registry Mechanic; the problem persists.

Also, whenever I reboot XP tells me that my Norton is turned off.

I followed all suggested directions on this site; AdAware & Spybot both ran clean in Safe mode; below is the HijackThis log I ran afterward.

Thanks For Any Help,

EFG

Hello,

Looks like there are still some policies set + active desktop is still loaded which explains the look.

So perform next:

Open notepad and copy and paste next bold in it:

regedit /e peek1.txt "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies"
regedit /e peek2.txt "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop"
regedit /e peek3.txt "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Desktop\Components"
type peek1.txt >> look.txt
type peek2.txt >> look.txt
type peek3.txt >> look.txt
del peek*.txt
start notepad look.txt

Save this as look.bat , choose to save as *all files and place it on your desktop.
This is how the batch must look afterwards: Posted Image
Doubleclick look.bat
Notepad will open with some txt in it. Copy and paste the contents in your next reply.

Ok,

Now Go to start > control panel > Display properties > Desktop > Customize Desktop... > Web tab > select "Desktop Uninstall" and click Delete.
Then press the 'Synchronise' button.
Reboot.

Many thanks -- I followed a very similar approach (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/ind...25&#entry256125) yet still find that the machine reboots with Norton AV disabled.

Best,

Is the wallpaper problem fixed now?

Concerning your Norton, better to uninstall and reinstall it. Most probably something got corrupted in there.
