Update: Well, I sat down tonight to deal with this issue once again and look at InadequateInfirmity's suggestion to untick the items related to Corel and Dell in autoruns and reboot, as well as Jacee's question about whether could Genie-Soft Timeline Backup be interfering with Volume Shadow Copy (although I must admit I have no idea what this means). I suddenly found a wave of computer investigatory bravery for a novice like myself and decided to look into Scotty WinPatrol. I found a tab "Delayed Startup" that said "Increase the speed of your computer by delaying programs not needed immediately." Interestingly, under the few programs listed under this tab as running, I found the culprits:
Dell Support Center sprtcmd.exe
Corel Photo Downloader COREL PHOTO DOWNLOADER.exe
Corel File Shell Monitor CORELIOMONITOR.exe
(I think I copied these names correctly)
I clicked on each and removed them. This seems to have solved the problem, at least as far as the messages from WinPatrol showing up upon start-up. I'm guessing there still may be something going on in the background, but it does not seem to be affecting my computer as far as I can tell. My primary annoyance was the messages that would pop up and had to be closed each time I started my computer, so at least at that level, for now, the problem seems to be fixed.
Thank you for the support, especially from you InadequateInfirmity! It's been a good exercise for me in giving me more courage to delve into my computer a bit more ... now watch me destroy my computer the next time I try such a thing!
Anyway, for now, it feels good to have solved this, if even only at a fairly superficial level.
