lost sound

I lost sound on some applications i went through windows trouble shooting ,everything was turned on and no harware conflicts , i then tried to uninstall sound max and reinstall a new version , it would'nt uninstall completly ,and now i have no sound at all and sound max is not listed on hardware list .
