Hi,

I'm new here, although have made use of the forums in the past to solve various issues very successfully.

My own Lappy a Toshiba L200 running Vista Home, and using IE8 has been suffering increasing problems recently with webpages freezing just after opening them. This usually results in me having to close IE and restart, a bit of a pain! Sometimes the offending webpage will reopen ok but more often than not it will cause the browser to refreeze again. Have had this on Ebay and also a Skoda owners forum called Briskoda. Have recently realised that Ebay seems to freeze at the point where Flash Player Ad's started to load so did some research and decided to uninstall the current latest version and move to Flash 5 beta, not curred the problem entirely but seems better although the problem still persists when I have more than a few webpages open at a time, at the most 6 to 8 perhaps.

Yesterday my laptop suddenly shutdown without warning as I moved it, and wouldn't restart. Tried it in safemode and that seemed ok so tried normal mode and it booted up ran for about 10 seconds as Vista started then just shutdown again. Tried without powersupply and it did the same same again, tried it without the battery insitu and it finally booted up to vista and then seemed to run ok for several hours until I went to bed.

I got to looking at the event viewer today and noticed that since June this year there have been lots of warnings and errors listed. To many to list here and in all honesty I'm going to struggle to decipher what most of these mean or indicate.

Not at all sure if the sudden shutdown is related at all to the IE8 issues either although I think the shutdown may have been a thermal one. One thing I should mention is that the power supply I currently use is not the original and is a little under rated at 19v 3.42a and wonder if the supply was some of the cause of the problems as it should be 19v 3.95a. Have also noticed that the laptop does seem to run hotter than it used to at times.

Any advise or thoughts appreciated as would any help with identifying the real culprit before I resort to re-installing Vista and maybe still end up with the same issues if it's a hardware problem or other programs I have installed.

More than happy to supply any details required

Just did a bit more scouring around and looking at Event Viewer again and noticed that things seemed pretty calm until 21/6/12 when all the errors and warnings start. Checked Programs and Features to see if anything was installed on or near that date and found on the 21/6/12 I installed Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 Redistributable and also Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 Redistributable x86 9.0.30729.616. As I said after this date there are lots of errors and warnings listed.
Could this be the cause of all my problems or just some?

Just had a quick scan through the output from MiniToolBox and noticed that I still have Comodo CIS installed. I had a very bad experience with Comodo last year I think!
I tried to uninstall it and move to a different firewall. Basically the uninstall wouldn't complete properly, From memory it left me with a system were no matter what I did I couldn't get an internet connection. Long long story on that which resulted in me having to reinstall comodo to get things back to relative normality but I decided to leave comodo well alone, think i disabled it, and now just rely on Vista's own F/W.
I'm always behind a router firewall in any event. But I still have comodo on my system as I couldn't find a way to succesfully ditch it even with the help of folk over on the Comodo Forum. Comodo don't offer any tools themselves to force uninstall their firewall/internet securty programs, the only tool comes from a forum members who have collaborated to make it.

Hi again Louis,

I downloaded and tried running Speccy. It wouldn't run fully and then shows a crash report "The application Speccy suddenly quit unexpectedly".

Please let me know what to try next.

Derek.

You have a version of CIS installed...that is 2 years old. That's not a good thing, IMO, when the software is free and there are more current versions. See CIS Download. That might account for some of your problems with CIS.

To be honest...I also experienced problems with Comodo software when I test-installed it, but that was probably a couple of years ago. I find that Avira Free or MSE are problem-free...and the Windows firewall is adequate and requires no time or brainpower to use properly.

I would uninstall that...since you are using Avast.

You can always use a tool like Revo Uninstaller to get rid of CIS.

http://www.revouninstaller.com/revo_uninstaller_free_download.html , choose the Pro trial version, read instructions before using.

Having two AV programs installed...causes system problems. I suggest correcting that...then run chkdsk /r command...and see how the system performs.

Hi Louis,

Well regarding CIS, I never used the AV part of it at all I was just using the FW component. Comodo worked very well and caused no problems until I tried to uninstall it and the thing went absolutely HAYWIRE. One thing I recall was it complaining about not being able to locate the install information on a network drive! I have never used a network drive. I tried absolutely everything I could think of to get rid of it including running Revo, as you recommend, and the Comodo Forum Uninstall Tool all to not avail. I tried re-installing and uninstalling more than sevral times all with the same result! I won't ever use Comodo's products for this reason although for the moment I'm stuck with it. I did come across my old posts the other week on the Comodo forum so could refresh my memopry on the exact messages and what I did. I'm fairly sure I was already using Avast Free when I had the issues with Comodo.
Regarding Revo, you say to use the Pro Trial version. Does it do anything extra that the standard free version wouldn't cover? If so I might risk another fight with comodo to be finally free of it.
I'm normally more than capable now of sorting most issues with my own and others PC's but Comodo proved impossibe even with advise from thier forum.
The errors I refered to in the Event Viewer are much more recent than my problems with comodo. As I stated they suddenly start on 21/6/12.
Another thing I don't understand is why wouldn't SPECCY install and run on my machine.
What I don't want to end up being forced into is a complete re-install of Vista and all that entails for the want of decent way of uninstalling comodo.
I do appreciate that starting all over again is sometimes the easiest if not the only way of getting things back where they should be.
For now I will run the chkdsk /r command and see if that picks anything up and fixes it.

Louis,

Just Googled re the Comodo unistall saga I had and found it.

I've copied the link for you have a look at, if it helps at all, so you can see what I did back then and what I tried.

http://forums.comodo.com/firewall-help-cis/unable-to-successfully-uninstall-comodo-55-free-firewall-t77326.0.html;wap2=

I know from the problems I had that others have had similar issues but they didn't have the issues that affected my system.

Back again!

Well I tried to run chkdsk /r from the desktop but the DOS screen came up and disappeared for to quick to do anything with it so ran it from Safe Mode. Took a while to run and seemed to finish ok. Laptop started ok afterwards but couldn't find a report stating what had been done if anything, expected to find it in the root directory.

Anyway plucked up courage to have another go at uninstalling Comodo yet again. To be sure I didn't get any conflicts from Avast and it's shields I uninstalled it, rebooted and then tried to uninstall Comodo. Ran the the uninstaller from Control Panel and thought it was going to work ok..............BUT yet again it failed! The message I get is as follows:-

A network error occurred while attempting to read from the file "C:\Windows|Installer|CFP_Setup msi".

Same old problem I had last year in September.

Don't know if this would have any effect on the issues I'm having. I'm sure if I try using Revo I will get the same error as this is what happened last year.

And at the end of all this I still don't know if Comodo is at the root of the errors and warning I see in Event Viewer.

Well with your help combined with that over on the Comodo Users forum I'm finally free of Comodo!! I did have it disabled in services but there was a whole lot of stuff that their removal/uninstall tool removed. What I think made the differnce was using the Pro version of Revo and also uninstalling Avast before hand and running Avast's own clean up tool and doing it all again in safe mode. I still got the strange message about about a network error and not being able to find the CFP_setup msi though even with REVO.
Seems that a lot of the warnings and errors in Event Viewer have stopped although there are 1 or 2 but nothing like the amount I was plagued with over the last few days.
Just have to make a decision now over which AV and FW to make use of, although I will be steering clear of Comodo for sometime to come.
So thanks again for your advise as I'd have most likely ended up re-installing.

Derek.

PS. I'm still unable to run Speccy, would have been interested in seeing if it showed up anything of importance!
