Hi! Before I begin, thanks in advance for any help you can give me! I really appreciate the fact that volunteers take time out of their day to assist complete strangers like me!

So... a bit of background on the PC in question. It is an AMD Athlon 2600+ with 512MB PC2700 DDR SDRAM, running Windows XP SP3. It used to be my computer until circa 2004, when I bought a new machine and retired it. My sister took ownership for a while but it has not been used in 2 or 3 years. I've now recovered it from my attic and decided to hand the computer down to my nephew. It was coated in dust, and initially would not even boot up. So I opened it up and gave it a good clean including RAM and motherboard, and took out the graphics card (an old Radeon 9800 XT 256MB) to remove copious amounts of dust from around it's fan. After a bit of TLC it was back to life! However because of all this dust, I'm not ruling out the idea that maybe I have some kind of overheating problem instead of a malware problem.

When I turned it on, my first course of action was to uninstall my sister's copy of Norton (guessing the subscription had ended) and replace it with Microsoft Security Essentials. I also had to install 121 security updates from Windows Update! Once this was done I deleted as much rubbish as I could off the computer. I noticed a number of dodgy looking toolbars in IE6 (Chrome is installed now) so I removed them manually. I then ran a scan of the disk, and MSE returned just one result. "Spyware:Win32/Agent", Alert Level High, in the file "C:WINDOWS\System32\grwinshlp.exe". I quarantined and removed the item and thought/hoped this was the end of it! However, after using it for a while we discovered that it will sometimes slow down to the point where it seems like it has frozen, and it becomes pretty much unusable. There will be a a few seconds of responsiveness, followed by many more seconds of "freeze" where nothing works except the mouse cursor, followed by another few seconds of responsiveness, and another freeze, and so on! This seems to persist until the computer is rebooted. When this happens, I notice two services hogging most of the computers memory, wuauclt.exe and svchost.exe

Now here is the shameful bit... I disobeyed your instructions and as part of my initial clean-up process I ran ComboFix! I'm sorry! I'm a bad person! I was instructed to use ComboFix a few years ago and it worked wonders to remove a rootkit from my old laptop, so I figured I'd give it a shot on the PC. In my defence, this was before I visited this forum and saw the "DO NOT USE COMBOFIX" notices plastered everywhere! My bad.

Like I said previously... perhaps it is all the result of a hardware problem, but the stuff I had to clean off the computer in my initial scan leaves me with a nagging feeling that there may still be something nasty embedded in the system! So, without further ado... here is the DDS log! (ark.log and attach.txt also attached. Daemon Tools is installed, but I defogged beforehand!)

Hi nasdaq, thanks for your response!

I did as you said and ran ComboFix. When it got to the part where it says something like "this should normally take around 10 minutes but this time could easily double", it seemed to hang there for a long time without ever completing stage 1. I have read elsewhere that if this happens you should end the 3XE process. So I opened task manager and ended GREP.3XE. The process then continued without further issue. I hope this was the right thing to do?!

Here is the ComboFix log:

Hopefully, all is well now?! Won't know for sure for a while as the computer sometimes has to remain in use for a while before it goes into 'slowdown mode'. I'll report back if I'm still encountering issues.

Many thanks for your help!
