I ran through all the steps (adaware, search and destroy, etc), and the spyfalcon software is still there. Also, I have a blinking red circle with an X and a fake windows update icon, and every 10 seconds or so it pops up with a message saying to click it to get the best spyware protection.
Also, I think something may have messed with my symantec anti-virus software, as I now have a windows notifier saying my virus protection needs to have the status checked.

Pasted below is my hijackthis log:

Hello,

It's better to print out the next instructions or save them in notepad, because you also have to work in safe mode without networking support, so this page wouldn't be available then.
It is also important you don't miss a step and perform everything in the right order!!

I see you have Viewpoint installed.
Viewpoint Manager is considered as foistware instead of malware since it is installed without users approval but doesn't spy or do anything "bad". This will change from what we know in 2006 read this article: http://www.clickz.com/news/article.php/3561546
I suggest you remove the program now. Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and remove the following programs if present.
  • Viewpoint
  • Viewpoint Manager
  • Viewpoint Media Player
I also see you have PartyPoker installed.
If you didn't install it with intension to play with, I suggest you uninstall it, because in most cases, these programs are supported by malware, getting installed without asking for it and also lead you to sites where malware is lurking.
If you do play it, then leave it alone.

* Download smitRem and save the file to your desktop.
Doubleclick it and choose install. This will create a new folder on your desktop with the name smitrem.

* Please download ewido security suite; it is a free version of the program.
  • Install ewido security suite
  • When installing, under "Additional Options" uncheck..
    • Install background guard
    • Install scan via context menu
  • Launch ewido by double-clicking on the icon on your desktop.
  • The program will now open to the main screen.
  • When you run ewido for the first time, you may get a warning "Database could not be found!". Click OK. We will fix this in a moment.
  • You will need to update ewido to the latest definition files.
    • On the left hand side of the main screen click update.
    • Then click on Start Update.
  • The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
(the status bar at the bottom will display ("Update successful")
If you are having problems with the updater, you can use this link to manually update ewido.
ewido manual updates
Don't run it yet.

* Download Spyfalconfix from here:
http://www.martijnc.be/tools/sffix.exe
Download it to your desktop.
Doubleclick sffix.exe
Click the 'install' button.
This will create a new folder on your desktop called sffix.
Open that folder and click: Run.bat
This tool needs internet connection so it can download an additional file to let the tool work properly.
If your firewall gives an alert, allow it instead of blocking it.
Let the tool perform its job.

* Reboot into Safe Mode`: ( without networking support !)
°To get into the Safe mode as the computer is booting press and hold your "F8 Key". Use your arrow keys to move to "Safe Mode" and press your Enter key.

* Start HijackThis, close all open windows leaving only HijackThis running. Place a check against each of the following if still present:

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {4da4616d-7e6e-4fd9-a2d5-b6c535733e22} - (no file)
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SpyFalcon] C:\Program Files\SpyFalcon\SpyFalcon.exe /h
O9 - Extra button: (no name) - {CD67F990-D8E9-11d2-98FE-00C0F0318AFE} - (no file)

* Click on Fix Checked when finished and exit HijackThis.
Make sure your Internet Explorer is closed when you click Fix Checked!

* Using Windows Explorer, locate the following folder and delete it if still present:

C:\Program Files\SpyFalcon

* Open the smitRem folder, then double click the RunThis.bat file to start the tool. Follow the prompts on screen.
Wait for the tool to complete and disk cleanup to finish.

* Clean your IE cookies and cache:
  • Close all instances of Outlook Express and Internet Explorer
  • Go to Control Panel > Internet Options > General tab
  • Click the "Delete Cookies" button
  • Next to it, Click the "Delete Files" button
  • When prompted, place a check in: "Delete all offline content", click OK
* Now open Ewido Security Suite
Click on scanner

* Click Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
* During the scan it will prompt you to clean files, click OK
* When the scan is finished, look at the bottom of the screen and click the Save report button.
* Save the report to your desktop

* Close Ewido

* Go to start > control panel > Display properties > Desktop > Customize Desktop... > Web tab > uncheck and delete everything you find in there. (except for "My current home page")

* Reboot back into Windows.

* Perform an onlinescan with panda: (please use this scanner instead of any other scanner!)
Panda Online
- Once you are on the Panda site click the Scan your PC button
- A new window will open...click the Check Now button
- Enter your Country
- Enter your State/Province
- Enter your e-mail address and click send
- Select either Home User or Company
- Click the big Scan Now button
- If it wants to install an ActiveX component allow it
- It will start downloading the files it requires for the scan (Note: It may take a couple of minutes)
- When download is complete, click on Local Disks to start the scan
- When the scan completes, if anything malicious is detected, click the See Report button, then Save Report and save it to a convenient location.
Post the contents of the Panda scan report in your next reply along with a new HijackThis Log, the contents of smitfiles.txt which is present on your Homedrive (C:\ in most cases)
and the Ewido Log by using Add Reply.

OK. I did everything asked, and the Spyfalcon appears to be gone, along with the little popup window in the toolbar. Pasted below are the things you asked me to include.
Am I done, or does further action need to be taken?
Also, I still have the red shield with the X in it on the toolbar. When I click on it it says that Symantec AntiVirus is installed, but its status is unkown. It appears to be working fine when I open it, but is it possible something got messed up with all the scanning/deleting? Should I just uninstall it then re-install again?

Thanks for your help.

Hello,

Not sure when you used Spyfalconfix, but it looks like you have been using it after smitrem instead of before, because I still see the related registry entries present.

Just run Spyfalconfix once again to make sure those entries are deleted as well.

The alert in your systray is because most probably Norton got corrupted in a way, so better to reinstall it.

Edit: Your hijackthislog looks clean again. :flowers:
