Windows 7 explorer.exe running at total memory after a few min. "memory leak?"

To start, I have Windows 7, on Sony Vaio laptop.

I have been working on the issues with the malware removal team, but now machine looks clean, I am still having issues.

When starting the computer and going to the task manager, I can watch explorer.exe start at about 18K memory usage and then grow constantly until it is running with almost all of the computer's physical memory after about seven min. I cannot get the context menu to show up after a few min by right clicking on anything.

I had been experiencing "freezing" while playing Eden Eternal (an online role playing game) before that, which made me consider malware and seek help here at BleepingComputer. The freezing has ended, last time I played on that machine at least, but now there seems to be some issue with the explorer.exe taking all of the memory. I haven't been using the machine since I don't trust that there's not something running in the background that shouldn't be.

In resource monitor there were "connections" that had "-" for both the name and the PID, but I don't know if that was the malware of if that's normal somehow?

Issue with explorer.exe seems to be limited to only one user account, and not the other one. That is to say that if I log on one of the other accounts explorer.exe behaves normally, as far as memory usage.

Checkmark the following checkboxes:
List last 10 Event Viewer log
List Installed Programs
List Users, Partitions and Memory size.

Click Go and paste the content into your next post.

I will do this soon! I wanted to let you know I'd not forgotten about you guys here.

I did run the mini tool box before, but there were some changes since then so I will run that again when I can have a chance to be home. Work has been extra rough these last few weeks, without an end in sight... At least not for the next two months.

I see that Windows defender was disabled, that was for the last virus scan on that machine, I have turned it back on... I only run that machine for tests now, until this is figured out.

There are many such errors documented on the Web...but most of the ones I've seen indicate a spcific program as responsible for the error generation.

I would uninstall all versions of Visual C++, then reinstall the redistributable 2005, 2008, and 2010 packages. As I understand it, all 3 versions are required by various parts of Win 7...I just looked on my Win 7 notebook and it reflects all 3 installed (plus critical updates). Of course, this is just grasping at straws on my part, but it's better than doing nothing.

There is no agreement that I can see on why your specific type of error occurs, as you can easily see by Googling "side-by-side errors in Win 7" or something similar.

Maybe others here have better ideas, so take my suggestions for what they are worth...just what I would do.

Thanks for looking into this for me.

Is it odd that it's only the one account and not the other?

I could just make the account that isn't having the issue be admin and then delete the old admin account that is having the issue maybe?

I wonder if there was something in one of the "optimizers" or in the registry changers that I used at the end of the first topic?

Where can I find the C++ programs to reload? Is that on the Microsoft website or on the recovery disks (if I have them?)

I want to make sure that there's no issues with the archive where some of these files may have been saved, is it possible to hook the archive external HDD up to a clean machine and keep the clean machine from getting infected?

I recall that I can make sure that auto runs is off and then scan the drive, but is there something else that I should do? will deleting an infected file from the external HDD cause it to infect the clean machine?

I know I have lots of questions. I am pretty freaked out about this, actually, thinking that there was something on my machine that could have been doing things behind my back, possibly harvesting data etc. I had over 50 passwords and log in credentials to change, and would prefer not to have to do that again... rolling dice for 3 hours to make up new passwords was a pain.

If you have multiple profiles...and only one experiences the problem...I'd say there is a case for profile corruption/damage, rather than a Windows/system problem.

I don't believe in downloading MS programs...from any website other than the MS site.

If you google the Visual C++ Redistributable versions, you will see that each is available for download from Microsoft.

That certainly make sense not to download the MS programs from somewhere other than MS.

Might there be a way to fix the profile? I have not had a chance to even look for the C++ stuff...

Damaged profiles...cannot be "fixed" any more than a damaged system file...but each can be replaced by an undamaged item.
