About a month ago my daughter installed Privitize VPN (without my knowledge!). I thought I had successfully removed all traces of this annoying "bad"-ware. It's not in my registry, it doesn't show up under add/remove programs, and it dosn't show up under add-ons for Firefox, Chrome, or IE.
This morning, however, when I came out to the computer, there was a login box for Privitize vpn in the middle of a Firefox window -- with some unknown user's name in the user name box. I closed out Firefox, started it back up, and the same login appeared. This time I x-ed out the login window, and then tried to access google.com to search for more info on Privitize VPN. I was unable to access the internet. I fired up Chrome, and the same thing happened. I then rebooted my computer and was able to access google.com, etc.
I found one item mentioning looking at Network Connections under Control Panel, and, sure enough, there was an entry for Privitize VPN under VPN connections. It was disabled, but I deleted it anyway. I rebooted again. The entry in Network Connections in still gone, and things seem to be working normally again. However, I want to make darn sure this thing is gone.
FYI I use McAfee Security Center and run weekly scans. Nothing was reported for the last scan.
What I want to do is make sure Privitize VPN won't come back and that there's no "back door" in my computer due to Privitze VPN.
