Alright, I'm sure this question was asked before, but I really haven't found a good answer yet.

About a week ago my USB mouse stopped working properly. It would lag, then freeze. At times if I unplugged and replugged it, it would work for a while of varying time (now it's as low as a few seconds or just not at all) and then freeze again. The USB device is often not recognized.

I've tried a few things to fix this:

1. I did a system restore to before the problems started. No luck. (Though perhaps I should have tried it at an even earlier time)
2. I deleted and rebuilt the INFCACHE.1 file. This too was ineffective.
3. Last night I uninstalled the mouse drivers in the device manager. This worked for a while (maybe an hour or two). Then the problems happened again.

Now I'm basically back at square one. I've seen advice to replace the mouse.inf files but unfortunately there isn't any other PC that is convenient for me that has Windows 7.

This is a very persistent problem, apparently. Any idea on how to fix this?

Yes. It works normally.

I tried a different restore from a definitive time where it didn't have any problems and that didn't work either.

Just tried reinstalling the USB drivers (even though I haven't had problems with other USB devices) and that didn't work either.

Hi -
Have you looked in Device Manager to see if there are any red or yellow ( ! ) or ( ? ) marks beside any devices ??

Have you used another mouse on the same computer, and what was the result ??

Thank You -

Have you tried plugging it in a different USB port?

Yep. Same results.

Yes. There's a yellow ! by the Universal Serial Bus controller (not the ones at the bottom where you'd expect, this was listed under "other devices") but for some reason that particular driver isn't showing up right now.

Hi -
Double click on the item that has the yellow ( ! ) -
It should have several listings like this >> PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_2835&SUBSYS_81EC1043&REV_02\3&11583659&0&D1
Please tell us all of the sections the numbers are listed under
This may be (usually is) a corrupted or non-existing driver that may be required

Please either, post a screen shot, or record the details, and what it is listed under -

Thank You -

Thing is, I can't find it right now:

It used to be listed under "network monitors" but it isn't there now.

Open 2 items by clicking on the ( > ) beside the listings -

Open Mouse, and Universal Serial Bus controllers just to see if there is anything under either of these -
If nothing is there it must be something else ..............

Thanks -
