I am having problems with my computer running very slowly. I have tried to defrag and do some clean up but it hasn't seem to help. Also, I keep getting a "website security certificate" warning and am not sure how to get that to stop popping up. I have done a system restore back to January 2001, as well as added Microsoft Security Essentials back on but that hasn't seem to help much either.

Thanks in advance for your help!

Hiya and welcome to Bleeping Computer :)

Download Security Check from here.
  • Save it to your Desktop.
  • Double click SecurityCheck.exe and follow the onscreen instructions inside of the black box.
  • A Notepad document should open automatically called checkup.txt; please post the contents of that document.

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from Here

Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
  • Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
  • The scan may take some time to finish, so please be patient.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.(See Extra Note)
  • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy&Paste the entire report in your next reply.
Extra Note:
If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process, if asked to restart the computer, please do so immediatly.

Download and scan with SUPERAntiSpyware Free Edition for Home Users
  • Double-click SUPERAntiSpyware.exe and use the default settings for installation.
  • An icon will be created on your desktop. Double-click that icon to launch the program.
  • If asked to update the program definitions, click "Yes". If not, update the definitions before scanning by selecting "Check for Updates". (If you encounter any problems while downloading the updates, manually download and unzip them from here.)
  • Under "Configuration and Preferences", click the Preferences button.
  • Click the Scanning Control tab.
  • Under Scanner Options make sure the following are checked (leave all others unchecked):
    • Close browsers before scanning.
    • Scan for tracking cookies.
    • Terminate memory threats before quarantining.
  • Click the "Home" button to leave the control center screen.
  • On the right, under "Complete Scan", choose Perform Complete Scan.
  • Click Scan your computer.
  • On the left, select all fixed drives.
  • Click "Start Complete Scan" to start the scan. Please be patient while it scans your computer.
  • After the scan is complete, a Scan Summary box will appear with potentially harmful items that were detected. Click "Continue".
  • Make sure everything has a checkmark next to it and click "Next".
  • A notification will appear that "Quarantine and Removal is Complete". Click "Remove Threats" and then click the "Finish" button to return to the main menu.
  • If asked if you want to reboot, click "Yes".
  • To retrieve the removal information after reboot, launch SUPERAntispyware again.
    • Click View Scan Logs.
    • Under Scanner Logs, double-click SUPERAntiSpyware Scan Log.
    • If there are several logs, click the current dated log and press View log. A text file will open in your default text editor.

Yep, they were sent correctly, but if you can copy/paste the logs from now on into the forum, it makes it easier for me to research the entries ;)

You have some things that are out of date, so lets work on them first.

Your Java is out of date, so lets do that next:

Upgrade Java : (32 bits)
  • Download the latest version of Java SE Runtime Environment (JRE) JRE 7 Update 9 .
  • Under the JAVA Platform Standard Edition, click the "Download JRE" button to the right.
  • Accept License Agreement.[/b]".
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation 32 bit ( jre-7u9-windows-i586.exe) and save it to your desktop. Do NOT use the Sun Download Manager..
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Control Panel, double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java version.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on the download to install the newest version.(Vista or Win 7 users, right click on the jre-7u9-windows-i586.exe and select "Run as an Administrator.")
  • Don't install any of the toolbars that are offered.

After doing the above, for the remains of the Java, can you do this:

Open Java in the Control Panel and under the General tab, under Temporary Internet Files, click the Settings button. Then click on Delete Files.

Make sure both of these options are checked:

  • Applications and Applets
  • Trace and Log Files
OK out of all the screens. :)

Your Adobe Flash Player is out of date. Go here to get the latest version:

Untick the option to install the McAfee Security Scan Plus, then click on the Download Now button.

Your Adobe Reader is out of date, so go here for the latest version:

Untick the option to install the McAfee Security Scan Plus, then click on the Download Now button.

After doing the above, can you run this for me:

Delete any copies of Combofix that you have.

Download ComboFix from one of these locations:

Link 1
Link 2

* IMPORTANT !!! As you download it rename it to username123.exe and save it to your Desktop

  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools

    • Click on this link to see a list of programs that should be disabled. The list is not all inclusive. If yours is not listed and you don't know how to disable it, please ask.
    • Remember to re-enable the protection again afterwards before connecting to the Internet.
  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.

  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.

  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Posted Image

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

Posted Image

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

That's okay, I've had some things to do this week, so not been online much either.

Have you looked in the C drive itself, to see if you can see the notepad log called ComboFix.txt

When you downloaded it, did you click to save it to your desktop, or did you select the Run option? If the latter, that may be the reason. So, try saving to your desktop.

If still no joy, lets leave it and run this instead

Please download AdwCleaner by Xplode onto your desktop.
  • Double click on AdwCleaner.exe to run the tool.
  • Click on Search.
  • A logfile will automatically open after the scan has finished.
  • Please post the contents of that logfile with your next reply.
  • You can find the logfile at C:\AdwCleaner[R1].txt as well.

Okay, lets see if there is a rootkit present. We'll do a tool at a time, so lets start with this one:

Please download the latest version of TDSSKiller from here and save it to your Desktop.
  • Doubleclick on TDSSKiller.exe to run the application, then click on Change parameters.
    Posted Image
  • Put a checkmark beside loaded modules.
    Posted Image
  • A reboot will be needed to apply the changes. Do it.
  • TDSSKiller will launch automatically after the reboot. Also your computer may seem very slow and unusable. This is normal. Give it enough time to load your background programs.
  • Then click on Change parameters in TDSSKiller.
  • Check all boxes then click OK.
    Posted Image
  • Click the Start Scan button.
    Posted Image
  • The scan should take no longer than 2 minutes.
  • If a suspicious object is detected, the default action will be Skip, click on Continue.
    Posted Image
  • If malicious objects are found, they will show in the Scan results - Select action for found objects and offer three options.
Ensure Cure (default) is selected, then click Continue > Reboot now to finish the cleaning process.
    Posted Image
Note: If Cure is not available, please choose Skip instead, do not choose Delete unless instructed.
  • A report will be created in your root directory, (usually C:\ folder) in the form of "TDSSKiller.[Version]_[Date]_[Time]_log.txt". Please copy and paste the contents of that file here.

You need to save these to the Desktop and not to the Tempory Internet Files folder, as this may be the problem.

See if you can run this:

Download RogueKiller to your desktop

  • Quit all running programs
  • For Vista/Seven, right click -> run as administrator, for XP simply run RogueKiller.exe
  • Wait until the Pre-scan has finished.
  • Click on Scan
  • If the program is blocked, do not hesitate to try several times. If it really does not work (it could happen), rename it to winlogon.exe
  • Click on Report and copy/paste the contents here.
