My PC (dell dimension c521) has something wrong with it....I just can't figure out what it could be

The main problem is; After working fine for a while, it won't let you do anything new!
Any programs I'm running seem to work for the time being, but you can't load anything new up. You're still able move the mouse & click on things - they just never load.

Also the sound won't play & if you click the icon by the clock (or even via Control panel) it doesn't load up.

When this happens, it's not unusual for the whole taskbar to become frozen (Start Menu won't load (Click or pressing shortcut on keyboard), Clock freezes, internet icon freezes)

Right now the PC lags if I try to do something simple like scroll down the page, but Task manager isn't showing signs of high CPU or PF usuage

Shutting down/restarting from start menu doesn't always work so I have to resort to holding the reset button on the front of my PC to power down.

Of course, once rebooted, it works fine...until it all flairs up again

I've tried running a virus/malware scan (Malwarebytes & ESET online scanner) but they believe my system is fine.
I've done a system restore to a time before all this happened - That didn't work.

I hope all this makes sense

Anybody got any ideas?

Rcsetup143.exe problem reinstates to install of Reecuva. I would uninstall, then reinstall.

I'm not able to properly interpret this one...seems to be coding/compiling error. PC-Doctor appears to be software preloaded on OEM systems, which may indicate file corruption/hard drive problem.

I see that you utilize uTorrent. IMO, that increases the possibility that you have downloaded some malware item that has attacked your system. When I add that to the appearance that you don't have an AV installed but rely on Eset Online Scanner.

<<Symantec Technical Support Web Controls (Version: 3.4.0)>>

Not sure what this is...or why it's installed. Appears to be part of Symantec update mechanism...but you don't have any Symantec apps installed that I can see.

Your Windows Installer is out-of-date, please install http://support.microsoft.com/kb/942288 .

You have 1GB of RAM installed and what I consider tons of unnecessary programs installed...I think that's a path leading to problems. The lack of RAM acocmpanied by the burden imposed by programs you have installed and running...may account for seeming system malperforming.

I suggest that you stop treating your system as if it has workhorse RAM installed...and pare down the requirements you are placing on it. Google Earth, Open Office, and such programs are probably killing your system's responsivity and efficiency...not to mention iTunes, uTorrent, etc.

I also suggest that you run the chkdsk /r command...upon completion of that, I would then defrag the Windows partition.

Registry play a key part in this, normal uninstall of software doesn't take out the registry which you will have to manually do it, Ccleaner is a good option

Bleeping Computer DOES NOT recommend the use of registry cleaners/optimizers for several reasons:
  • Registry cleaners are extremely powerful applications that can damage the registry by using aggressive cleaning routines and cause your computer to become unbootable.

The Windows registry is a central repository (database) for storing configuration data, user settings and machine-dependent settings, and options for the operating system. It contains information and settings for all hardware, software, users, and preferences. Whenever a user makes changes to settings, file associations, system policies, or installed software, the changes are reflected and stored in this repository. The registry is a crucial component because it is where Windows "remembers" all this information, how it works together, how Windows boots the system and what files it uses when it does. The registry is also a vulnerable subsystem, in that relatively small changes done incorrectly can render the system inoperable. For a more detailed explanation, read Understanding The Registry.
  • Not all registry cleaners are created equal. There are a number of them available but they do not all work entirely the same way. Each vendor uses different criteria as to what constitutes a "bad entry". One cleaner may find entries on your system that will not cause problems when removed, another may not find the same entries, and still another may want to remove entries required for a program to work.
  • Not all registry cleaners create a backup of the registry before making changes. If the changes prevent the system from booting up, then there is no backup available to restore it in order to regain functionality. A backup of the registry is essential BEFORE making any changes to the registry.
  • Improperly removing registry entries can hamper malware disinfection and make the removal process more difficult if your computer becomes infected. For example, removing malware related registry entries before the infection is properly identified can contribute to system instability and even make the malware undetectable to removal tools.
  • The usefulness of cleaning the registry is highly overrated and can be dangerous. In most cases, using a cleaner to remove obsolete, invalid, and erroneous entries does not affect system performance but it can result in "unpredictable results".

Unless you have a particular problem that requires a registry edit to correct it, I would suggest you leave the registry alone. Using registry cleaning tools unnecessarily or incorrectly could lead to disastrous effects on your operating system such as preventing it from ever starting again. For routine use, the benefits to your computer are negligible while the potential risks are great.Louis

Thanks for all the advice

The Recuva problem was due to the PC freezing & me manually shutting down the pc - but it's installed properly now.

I did have an AV installed (Virgin Media), but a system restore that I did stopped it from loading up correctly (Even though the firewall aspect still seems to work) & I'm having problems re-downloading it. Could that be what Symantec is?

Could you remind me on how to run a chkdsk /r? I can't remember how to do it

I've uninstalled a few programs, & *fingers crossed* everything seems to working well...so far.

Thanks again
Louise

Start/Run...type chkdsk /r and hit Enter.

Type Y in new screen and hit Enter.

Reboot the system. The chkdsk /r will run...when it completes, the system will boot into Windows.

Regarding Symantec...Virgin Media is an ISP, provider of Internet access. My understanding is that some ISPs provide AV programs to their customers...the key thing is that customers are not under any obligation to install/use such. I'd take a look at the listings under Add/Remove Programs to check for installation.

I personally would not recommend installing/using any Symantec programs...they are too cumbersome for the system and often present avoidable problems. There is no need to use a 3d-party firewall...the Windows firewall is more than adequate for users who don't want a number of unnecessary controls, reports, etc. that some users seem to love.
