Hi there,

MWB found "PUM.Hijack.TaskManager" on my computer. MWB quarantines it, but PUM keeps popping up every day when it runs a scan. I have posted the relevant logs below (including a sample MWB log showing PUM).

Any help would be most greatly appreciated!

Steve

:welcome: to Bleeping Computer.

My name is Jason and I'll be helping you with your computer problems. You can call me by my screename jntkwx or Jason is fine.

Some things to remember while we are working together.

  • Do not run any other tool untill instructed to do so!
  • Please do not attach logs or put logs in code or quote boxes (unless explicitly asked to)
  • Tell me about any problems that have occurred during the fix.
  • Tell me of any other symptoms you may be having as these can also help.
  • Do not run anything while running a fix.
  • If you don't understand a step, please ask for clarification before continuing with any future steps.

In the upper right hand corner of the topic you will see the Posted Image button. Click on this then choose Immediate E-Mail notification and then Proceed and you will be sent an email once I have posted a response and make the cleaning process faster.

Note to others: The instructions here are intended for the person who began this topic. If you need help, please create your own topic in the appropriate forum.

Install Recovery Console and Run ComboFix

This tool is not a toy. If used the wrong way you could trash your computer. Please use only under direction of a Helper. If you decide to do so anyway, please do not blame me or ComboFix.

Download Combofix from any of the links below, and save it to your desktop.

Link 1
Link 2
  • Close/disable all anti-virus and anti-malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix. Refer to this page if you are not sure how.
  • Close any open windows, including this one.
  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
  • If you did not have it installed, you will see the prompt below. Choose YES.
  • Posted Image
  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Note:The Windows Recovery Console will allow you to boot up into a special recovery (repair) mode. This allows us to more easily help you
should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware. It is a simple procedure that will only take a few moments of your time.

  • Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

    Posted Image
  • Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.
  • When finished, it will produce a report for you. Please post the contents of the log (C:\ComboFix.txt).
Leave your computer alone while ComboFix is running.
ComboFix will restart your computer if malware is found; allow it to do so.

Note: Please Do NOT mouseclick combofix's window while its running because it may cause it to stall.

In your next post, please include:
  • Combofix log
  • How's your computer running now? Please be as descriptive as possible.

Regards,
Jason

Hi Jason,

Thanks for responding to this request. I ran ComboFix and have pasted the log below.

The machine is painfully slow when reloading the desktop icons/folders, which it seems to do quite often. I've got a LOT of folders and jumk there I can clean up - is it okay to do that during this process, or should I wait?

I ran MWB (quick scan) and the PUM didn't show up; however, it had been reappearing every day even after MWB quarantined it, so maybe I'll know more tomorrow when it runs automatically again.

Please let me know next steps. Thanks again for your help!

Steve

Hi Jason,

Just a follow up to yesterday's post:

As of this morning (10/20/12) PUM.Hijack.TaskManager is still alive and well after running ComboFix. I was waiting for MWB to run again, and it found it:

Registry Data Items Detected: 1
HKCU\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System|DisableTaskMgr (PUM.Hijack.TaskManager) -> Bad: (1) Good: (0) -> Quarantined and repaired successfully.

Hope this is helpful. Thanks!

Steve

That is helpful, because Combofix removed several malware items, but this tells us there's still something causing the Task Manager to become disabled.

:step1: SystemLook
Please download SystemLook from one of the links below and save it to your Desktop.
Download Mirror #1
Download Mirror #2

  • Double-click SystemLook.exe to run it.
  • Copy the content of the following codebox into the main textfield:
    :filefind
    esubx.exe
  • Click the Look button to start the scan.
  • When finished, a notepad window will open with the results of the scan. Please post this log in your next reply.
Note: The log can also be found on your Desktop entitled SystemLook.txt

:step2: Rerun Malwarebytes
Open Malwarebytes, click on the Update tab, and click the check for Updates button. <-- IMPORTANT!
  • If an update is found, the program will automatically update itself. Press the OK button to close that box and continue.
  • If you encounter any problems while downloading the definition updates, manually download them from here and just double-click on mbam-rules.exe to install.
On the Scanner tab:
  • Make sure the "Perform Full Scan" option is selected.
  • Then click on the Scan button.
  • If asked to select the drives to scan, leave all the drives selected and click on the Start Scan button.
  • The scan will begin and "Scan in progress" will show at the top. It may take some time to complete so please be patient.
  • When the scan is finished, a message box will say "The scan completed successfully. Click 'Show Results' to display all objects found".
  • Click OK to close the message box and continue with the removal process.
Back at the main Scanner screen:
  • Click on the Show Results button to see a list of any malware that was found.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When removal is completed, a log report will open in Notepad.
  • The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply. Be sure to post the complete log to include the top portion which shows MBAM's database version and your operating system.
  • Exit MBAM when done.
Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be asked to reboot your computer so MBAM can proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot normally (not into safe mode) will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.

In your next reply, please include:
  • SystemLook log
  • Malwarebytes log
  • How's your computer running now? Please be as descriptive as possible.

Regards,
Jason

Hi Jason,

The MWB and SystemLook logs are pasted below. I don't think I'll know until tomorrow if the PUM.Hijack.TaskManager is there because it usually reappears a day or so after MWB quarantines it. Please let me know what else you'd like me to do.

Thanks!

Steve

ProblemWithOlaf,

We may have found what's causing the Task Manager to get disabled.

Let's upload that file for a second opinion on what it actually is.
Please make sure that you can view all hidden files. Instructions on how to do this can be found here:
How to see hidden files in Windows

Virustotal: http://www.virustotal.com/
When the Virustotal page has finished loading, click the Choose File button and navigate to the following file and click Send File.

C:\WINDOWS\system32\esubx.exe

If prompted to reanalyze a file, please do so.

Please post back the website addresses (URL) of the Virustotal result in your next post.
Regards,
Jason

Hi,

I did as you suggested. Here's the result of the Virustotal scan of esubx.exe:

Rerun Combofix
Open notepad and copy/paste the text below into it:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic472189.html

Collect::
C:\WINDOWS\system32\esubx.exe

Registry::
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\windows nt\currentversion\winlogon]
"Userinit"="c:\windows\system32\userinit.exe,"

Save this as CFScript.txt

Posted Image

Refering to the picture above, drag CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe

If prompted to update Combofix, please allow it to update.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log in your next reply.

**Note**

When Combofix finishes running, the ComboFix log will open along with a message box--do not be alarmed. With the above script, ComboFix will capture files to submit for analysis.
Ensure you are connected to the internet and click OK on the message box.

ProblemWithOlaf,

Looking better. :thumbup2:

:step1: AdwCleaner

  • Please download AdwCleaner by Xplode onto your desktop.
  • Close all open programs and internet browsers.
  • Double click on AdwCleaner.exe to run the tool.
  • Click on Search.
  • Confirm each time with Ok.
  • A text file will open. Please post the content of that logfile with your next answer.
  • You can find the logfile at C:\AdwCleaner[R1].txt as well.

:step2: RogueKiller

  • Download & SAVE to your Desktop RogueKiller or from here
  • Quit all programs that you may have started.
  • Please disconnect any USB or external drives from the computer before you run this scan!
  • For Vista or Windows 7, right-click and select "Run as Administrator to start"
  • For Windows XP, double-click to start.
  • Wait until Prescan has finished ...
  • Then Click on "Scan" button
  • Wait until the Status box shows "Scan Finished"
  • click on [b]Report/b] and copy/paste the content of the Notepad into your next reply.
  • The log should be found in RKreport[1].txt on your Desktop
  • Exit/Close RogueKiller

In your next reply, please include:
  • AdwCleaner log
  • RogueKiller log
  • How's your computer running now? Please be as descriptive as possible.

Regards,
Jason

Hi Jason,

When I run RogueKiller, you say "Please disconnect any USB or external drives from the computer before you run this scan!"

What about mapped networked drives? Should they be disconnected as well?

Also: Does the esubx.exe have something to do with the EnuffPC program I installed? It's a parental time-control program we've been using for quite a while.

Thanks,

Steve

Yes, go ahead and disconnect those as well.

Also: Does the esubx.exe have something to do with the EnuffPC program I installed? It's a parental time-control program we've been using for quite a while.

It's possible (I had thought of that possibility), though I haven't found any proof that file is associated with EnuffPC. If you find EnuffPC is not working, then it's likely that file is associated with EnuffPC, and we can restore esubx.exe
Regards,
Jason
