My desktop background doesn't show anymore. When I go to change it, it doesn't let me pick a picture, only a colour. :thumbsup:

Is that the only problem your computer is exhibiting or are other anomalies occurring also?
Did you add or uninstall any hardware or software just before this problem started or use an antimalware product such as Spybot or a registry "cleaner" that did?

Are any other pictures you had stored in the computer altered or changed too? Or just the screensavers and wallpaper?

Did you try System Restore using a date that preexisted this problem?

Look in the device manager and see if there are any yellow or red warning marks on anything in it. Open all the "trees" and look.

No it's not fried, we will fix it, it still works you are taking to me.. :thumbsup:
It's just not as pretty as you want it.

Have you clicked on the Customize Desktop button>Web Tab and make sure there is no check in My Current Home Page or any added entries??

Have you been infected or checked for infection of spyware &/or malware just before this happened??

Hello,

Looks like some policies are set.

Perform next:

Open notepad and copy and paste next bold in it:

regedit /e peek1.txt "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies"
start notepad peek1.txt

Save this as look.bat , choose to save as *all files and place it on your desktop.
This is how the batch must look afterwards: Posted Image
Doubleclick look.bat
Notepad will open with some txt in it. Copy and paste the contents in your next reply.

Hello,

Open notepad and copy and paste next bold in it:
(don't forget to copy and paste REGEDIT4)

REGEDIT4

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer]
"NoActiveDesktop"=-
"ForceActiveDesktopOn"=-

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System]
"Wallpaper"=-

Save this as fix.reg Choose to save as *all files and place it on your desktop.
It should look like this: Posted Image
Doubleclick on it and when it asks you if you want to merge the contents to the registry, click yes/ok.

Then try to change your desktop again.

You're welcome. :thumbsup:

Better to scan with an updated Adaware SE and/or Spybot S&D, because I think there will be still a lot of files present on your system which need to go, because you were apparently dealing with a desktop Hijacker before and this one never comes alone.

Just let me know if you're still having any problems like popups, changed startpage etc.

happycooldude, better to work further in your own thread now. I was thinking for a moment you were the TopicStarter here.

I am going to reply in your original thread as well, since you didn't get a reply for a week yet.

sockgurl69, if you still need help, perform my steps as I described in Post 9, because in your case, other policies can be set.
