We've had several systems recently that were infected with various versions of Fake Alert trojans that we were able to clean using the tools described in the virus removal section of this website. In a few cases after cleaning the virus we can't install Windows updates. Get error message 80070002. We've tried all the Microsoft recommended fixes and some posted on various other forums. We end up having to reinstall Windows. Is anyone else having this problem? Have a fix?

Are you sure about the error code?

What update gave you this error? Service pack?

What kind of fixes did you try?

Did you find any traces of zero access rootkit on the fake alert infected systems?

Did you check if BITS and windows updates services are running?

Error code is correct.
Any update. When you click on Windows update after a few seconds it comes back with Windows could not search for new updates and the error #.
XP SP3/Vista SP2.
All fixes listed when searching on Support.microsoft.com.
Some of the systems did have rootkits and they were removed.
Yes BITS and Windows Update were both running.

I guess there should have been changes in registry and system permissions after getting infected which might be blocking the service pack update. We cannot find the exact cause without any logs.Next time you have a system with this error code, start a topic here
