Thanks in advance to anyone who can help.

I am unable to get rid of spyfalcon 2 and Zolob. Also, on IE startup I am directed to the spyware website (www.securitysafeguards.net) until I disable the IE add-on but I get about: blank as my startup url.

Windows Defender keeps finding Zolob but it keeps returning. I have tried ad-aware, Spybot-SD and bit-defender. I have a Corporate version of Norton anti-virus and tried Mcafee Avert Stinger. I am running Windows XP Pro.

More information to add:

I read topic "Started As Spyfalcon, Now Appears To Be More, Not sure how to clean it up" started by nub which was answered by miekiemoes.

I ran Spyfalconfix. Spyfalcon is not reappearing but I still get popups without IE running.

Then I ran hijackThis and tried to fix "O2 - BHO: (no name) - {4da4616d-7e6e-4fd9-a2d5-b6c535733e22} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\hp481D.tmp" but it was not able to delete it.

Then I ran Panda ActiveScan:

Hi pseguin

*It is a good idea to print off these instructions - they will be needed later when internet access is not available. You may also like to save these instructions in word/notepad to the desktop where they can be easily found for the same reasons as above.
It is important that you complete the following instructions in the correct order, and also that you don't miss anything out!

* Download smitRem and save the file to your desktop.
Doubleclick it and choose install. This will create a new folder on your desktop with the name smitrem.

* Please download ewido security suite; it is a free version of the program.
  • Install ewido security suite
  • When installing, under "Additional Options" uncheck..
    • Install background guard
    • Install scan via context menu
  • Launch ewido by double-clicking on the icon on your desktop.
  • The program will now open to the main screen.
  • When you run ewido for the first time, you may get a warning "Database could not be found!". Click OK. We will fix this in a moment.
  • You will need to update ewido to the latest definition files.
    • On the left hand side of the main screen click update.
    • Then click on Start Update.
  • The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
(the status bar at the bottom will display ("Update successful")
If you are having problems with the updater, you can use this link to manually update ewido.
ewido manual updates
Don't run it yet.

* Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
Do not run it yet.

Make sure that you can see hidden files.
  • Click Start.
  • Click My Computer.
  • Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
  • Select the View Tab.
  • Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
  • Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
  • Click Yes to confirm.
  • Uncheck the Hide file extensions for known file types.
  • Click OK.
Whilst TeaTimer is an excellent tool for the prevention of spyware, it can sometimes prevent HijackThis from fixing certain things.
Please disable TeaTimer for now until you are clean. TeaTimer can be re-activated once your HijackThis log is clean.
  • Open Spybot Search & Destroy.
  • In the Mode menu click "Advanced mode" if not already selected.
  • Choose "Yes" at the Warning prompt.
  • Expand the "Tools" menu.
  • Click "Resident".
  • Uncheck the "Resident "TeaTimer" (Protection of overall system settings) active." box.
  • In the File menu click "Exit" to exit Spybot Search & Destroy.
We need to disable your Windows Defender Real-time Protection as it may interfere with the fixes that we need to make.

Open Windows Defender.
Click on Tools, General Settings.
Scroll down and uncheck Turn on real-time protection (recommended).
After you uncheck this, click on the Save button and close Windows Defender.

After all of the fixes are complete it is very important that you enable Real-time Protection again.

* Open hijackthis, click 'config' (bottom right)
Choose the tab 'misc Tools' on top.
Choose 'delete a file on reboot'
In the field, copy and paste next:

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\winbfi32.dll

Click open.
Hijackthis will tell you that this file will be deleted on next reboot and if you want to reboot now. Click Yes/ok
Your system must reboot now.
files say Yes. When asked if you want to reboot now, say No.

* Reboot into Safe Mode`: ( without networking support !)
°To get into the Safe mode as the computer is booting press and hold your "F8 Key". Use your arrow keys to move to "Safe Mode" and press your Enter key.

* Start HijackThis, close all open windows leaving only HijackThis running. Place a check against each of the following if still present:

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {4da4616d-7e6e-4fd9-a2d5-b6c535733e22} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\hp481D.tmp
O20 - Winlogon Notify: winbfi32 - C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\winbfi32.dll

* Click on Fix Checked when finished and exit HijackThis.
Make sure your Internet Explorer is closed when you click Fix Checked!

* Open the smitRem folder, then double click the RunThis.bat file to start the tool. Follow the prompts on screen.
Wait for the tool to complete and disk cleanup to finish.Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
If you use Firefox browserClick Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
If you use Opera browserClick Opera at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

* Using Windows Explorer, locate the following files/folders, and delete them if still present:

C:\Documents and Settings\Phil\Favorites\Antivirus Test Online.url
C:\WINDOWS\system32\mssearchnet.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\oins.exe

* Now open Ewido Security Suite
Click on scanner

* Click Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
* During the scan it will prompt you to clean files, click OK
* When the scan is finished, look at the bottom of the screen and click the Save report button.
* Save the report to your desktop

* Close Ewido

* Go to start > control panel > Display properties > Desktop > Customize Desktop... > Web tab > uncheck and delete everything you find in there. (except for "My current home page")

* Reboot back into Windows.

* Please run Panda scan again in the way you did it before - When the scan completes, if anything malicious is detected, click the See Report button, then Save Report and save it to a convenient location.
Post the contents of the Panda scan report in your next reply along with a new HijackThis Log, the contents of smitfiles.txt which is present on your Homedrive (C:\ in most cases)
and the Ewido Log by using Add Reply.

David,

Things are looking good so far. Thanks. Panda did report malicious software found but it is just smitRem.

David,

This one is harmful? I don't have the final hijackthis log created from following your instructions (I should have renamed it) but I did not see the "02 - BHO" entry.

Hey Phil

You are right to be concerned over that entry as it is bad, however it is just an orphaned entry that should be easy to remove.

*Now start a new scan with HJT and place a checkmark next to each of the following items (if present):

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {4da4616d-7e6e-4fd9-a2d5-b6c535733e22} - (no file)

* Make sure your Internet Explorer is closed and click on "Fix Checked" and exit HijackThis when finished.

Reboot and post back with a new HJT log, the ewido log that you did earlier and the smitfiles.txt that you did earlier also.

David

Hey Phil

* Download Spyfalconfix from here:
http://www.martijnc.be/tools/sffix.exe
Download it to your desktop.
Doubleclick sffix.exe
Click the 'install' button.
This will create a new folder on your desktop called sffix.
Open that folder and click: Run.bat
This tool needs internet connection so it can download an additional file to let the tool work properly.
If your firewall gives an alert, allow it instead of blocking it.
Let the tool perform its job.

Please reboot and run smit.rem again and post the log it creates, along with a new HJT log.
David

Hi Psequin

* Download Spyfalconfix from here (if you have already done this, no need to download it again):
http://www.martijnc.be/tools/sffix.exe
Download it to your desktop.
Doubleclick sffix.exe
Click the 'install' button.
This will create a new folder on your desktop called sffix.
Open that folder and click: Run.bat
This tool needs internet connection so it can download an additional file to let the tool work properly.
If your firewall gives an alert, allow it instead of blocking it.
Let the tool perform its job.

Now please open the smitrem folder on your desktop and look for a file called getsts.exe. Please run this program and copy the log it creates back here.

Hey Phil

Please download FixSF.reg from here and save it to your desktop.
It should look like this: Posted Image
Doubleclick on it and when it asks you if you want to merge the contents to the registry, click yes/ok.
Please reboot and post back with a new getsts.exe log; the program can be found in the smitrem folder on your desktop.

David
