Hi. I have a Dell Inspiron 580 with Intel i5 processor. It has started having a big problem - it turns on fine, but on three occasions after being on for a while, it has turned off and then reboots with a recovery screen coming up. It turns off very suddenly and when my speakers are on, it makes a brief buzzing noise, almost like a zap and the screen whites out with static or dot patterns all over it before it quickly turns off. I'm going to call Dell (it has 2 days left on warranty!), but was hoping to get some ideas of what might be going on. Thanks for any assistance.

Hello mujibyepi,

The problem could have many causes: hardware, software (driver), or malware.

Yes, I would definitely contact Dell while the computer is still under warranty. This would be to first rule-out any obvious hardware issues. My guess is they are going to want you to run the built-in Dell Diagnostics to test your computer hardware. If any errors/problems are found, you will receive an error code. Make sure you document any errors.

This is your computer manual: Dell Inspiron 580. See page 38, Dell Diagnostics -> Starting Diagnostics From Your Hard Drive.
  • Restart the computer and press the F12 key when you see the Dell Logo.
  • Select Diagnosis from the Boot Menu and press <Enter>.
  • A Pre-Boot System Assessment (PSA) will usually run and quickly check each component. Record any error codes.
  • If PSA doesn't find any problems, there are ways to run more extensive hard drive and memory tests. I would recommend that you run all extended tests, because you want to find any errors while the computer is still under warranty.
If Dell Diagnostics can not detect any errors, we will then have to explore the other potential causes.

Regards,
Brooks

Thanks Artrooks. I was hoping it would not encompass the full range of possibilities, but figured it might. Yes, they'll probably have me run the diagnostics. I am getting ready to call them now and I'll let you know what comes of it. Thanks again.

Just a follow-up: I spoke with the Dell tech support and he had me turn off the computer, unplug everything from it and then press in for 30 seconds on the power button. He said that this clears static from the computer. He then ran a diagnostic on it and everything came out okay. So far, it is working, although who knows as it was sporadic before. I'll keep my fingers crossed since the warranty expires tomorrow!

Thanks for the help on this.

Hi,

Sorry to hear that the problem is persisting.

mujibyepi said in a PM, Sent Today, 10:57 AM

I was using the computer a fair amount yesterday with no problems, but then yesterday pm - zap, same thing. Uggh! I ran a full virus scan with the McAffee software that came with the computer and no viruses. Any thoughts or suggestions? I'm going to call Dell again, but I'm assuming they won't be able to help much. Thanks so much for your help.

Good idea to keep Dell involved, if you can, especially since warranty is about to or has just expired.

( 1.) In addition to the full McAfee scan, I would recommend that you download and install the free version of Malwarebyte's Anti-malware.
  • During installation, decline the trial with the Pro version.
  • The definitions should be updated automatically.
  • Run a full scan and report any malware; hopefully "none."

( 2.) Please download MiniToolBox by farbar, save it to your Desktop, then run it.

Check the following checkboxes:
  • Report IE Proxy Settings
  • Report FF Proxy Settings
  • List content of Hosts
  • List last 10 Event Viewer log
  • List Installed Programs
  • List Devices
    • Only Problems
  • List Users, Partitions and Memory size.
  • List Minidump Files
Click Go and post the result (Result.txt). A copy of Result.txt will be saved in the same directory the tool is run.

Regards,
Brooks

Hi Artrooks. I've followed your suggestions. I ran Malwarebyte's Anti-Malware, and the results showed no problems. I also ran MiniToolBox and I am posting the result below.

My computer has zapped out two more times since I contacted Dell. Please let me know if you have any thoughts. Thanks for all your help.

Outdated software: These should be uninstalled via Control Panel (view by: large icons) -> Program and Features.

Java™ 6 Update 20 (64-bit) (Version: 6.0.200)
Java™ 6 Update 20 (Version: 6.0.200)
Java™ 6 Update 29 (Version: 6.0.290)

IObit Malware Fighter (Version: 1.0) <==== outdated, questionable value.
Advanced SystemCare 5 (Version: 5.0.0)
<==== questionable value.

I see nothing else revealing in the MiniToolBox text, except that your Hosts file is missing. I begin to question infection either past or present.

At this point, my recommendation would be for you to create a post in Bleeping Compter's Am I Infected Forum. Read the Forum rules, give a detailed description of the problem, and post a link to this topic. There are a lot of stealth (rootkit) infections that evade standard anti-virus and anti-malware detection. It would be good to definitely rule out infection as a cause for your restarts.

Regards,
Brooks

Hi Artroots. I'll do the suggested things regarding outdated software. An interesting development: In addition to posting on this forum, I had posted on PCHelpForum.com and recently got a reply from a Dell rep. He checked my service request number from when I contacted Dell last week, and he replied that there is a problem with my video card. I'm confused as to why the original Dell tech person did not tell me this, but I'm glad that perhaps the problem has been found. They are going to send me a new video card, and I was informed that my warranty does not expire until 10/25 (they must add some days to the date of purchase to allow the warranty to start after delivery). I'm feeling encouraged greatly - I was beginning to dread that this might be some mysterious, unsolvable issue that would require shelling out for a new computer. My last computer, which was a Gateway, lasted 7 years with no problems. Let's keep our fingers crossed on resolution of this. Thanks again for your assistance!

Peace, Christopher
